CAIRO: ������Ƶ’s permanent representative to the Arab League said systematic attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi militia targeting populated areas and vital installations in the Kingdom and the UAE represents an attack on the national capabilities of Arab Gulf states.
Speaking during an extraordinary session of the Arab League, Abdulrahman bin Saeed Al-Jumah said the attacks aim to destabilize the region and international peace and security, and threaten the global economy, energy security, and maritime navigation.
Describing the attacks as war crimes, Al-Juma said: “In light of these militias’ disregard for all international and humanitarian laws and their rejection of all international and regional efforts and peace initiatives aimed at addressing the political and humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the Kingdom calls on the international community to take a firm stand against the terrorist Houthi militia and those supporting them, and to exert political pressures to end their hostile actions against the Yemeni people and regional countries.”
The call follows a Houthi drone strike last week on oil storage facilities in Abu Dhabi, in which three people died. The Houthis have also launched a barrage of drone and missile attacks targeting civilians and energy infrastructure in ������Ƶ.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, strongly condemned the attack on civilian areas and facilities in the UAE, stressing that the league stands with its member state in the face of these violations, which aim to destabilize the security and stability of the region.
The diplomatic adviser to the President of the UAE, Anwar Gargash, stressed his country will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty and national security, and that it has the legal and moral right to respond and prevent any aggression on its territory.
The league’s permanent representatives urged the UN and the Security Council to “take a decisive and unified stance against Houthi attacks on ������Ƶ and the UAE.”
They should “deter and confront the ongoing atrocities committed by the Houthi militia against civilians and their deliberate blocking of the delivery of aid and humanitarian supplies, and the confiscation of food,” the League said.
US President Joe Biden is coming under increasing pressure to restore the Houthis to the US list of foreign terrorist organizations. The designation was applied by the Trump administration in January 2021, but revoked by Biden a month after he took office.
