JEDDAH: Saudi filmmaker Shahad Ameen’s debut feature, 2019’s “Scales,” was hugely successful. The dystopian drama picked up prestigious awards at the Venice Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, and the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival, as well as several regional awards. It was also selected as Ƶ’s official entry for the Oscars in 2020, although it was not ultimately nominated.

So expectations are high for Ameen’s recently completed second film, “Hijra,” which she hopes will be in cinemas next year. Ameen is currently in Paris working on post-production and editing.

“Hijra” (which means ‘migration’) tells an intimate family story: When a teenage girl disappears, her grandmother (played by Khairiya Nazmi) and younger sister, Janna (Lamar Feddan), travel to the north of the Kingdom in search of her.

“It’s less about the chase and more about the poetic journey that they go through,” Ameen tells Arab News. “But it has this epic backdrop, which is Hajj.”

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah — one of the five pillars of Islam. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed Hajj in Ƶ this year.

“Hijra” has its roots in a story that Ameen began more than a decade ago. “I was working on a story about this missing girl. That’s the only element that survived from that story though,” she explains.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, since international borders were closed, Ameen started exploring the Kingdom.

“It was the first time I’d traveled to the north of Ƶ, and all around, which really got me excited about doing a road movie, because, to be honest, a lot of filmmaking is about choosing the locations and creating an atmosphere for the film,” she says. “And at one point in my travels I thought it would be amazing to make a road film about this family on their way to Hajj and this girl goes missing.”

The movie was shot over 55 days across eight cities in the Kingdom — Taif, Jeddah, Medina, Wadi Al-Faraa, AlUla, Tabuk, NEOM, and Duba. Throughout the journey, Ameen’s emotive storytelling focuses on how Ƶ has always been a place where Muslims have come together, and not just for Hajj.

“It was always being brought back to the idea that this land has connected people from all over the world,” she says. “That’s what excites me. I always get angry when Americans are like, ‘Oh, we’re a melting pot and a place of immigration.’ That’s true of us too. I mean, they say they immigrate for freedom, but for a lot of Muslims around the world Ƶ is the place where they can be free.”

The theme of immigration/emigration has great resonance for Ameen personally, since her great grandfather came from Bukhara in Uzbekistan. She grew up in the port city of Jeddah, where, she says, “one sees a lot of Bukharis, Tashkenti, Asians and Africans.”

She continues: “It was really exciting for me to tell the story of this young girl looking for her freedom away from her family, but through her we get to learn about her grandmother’s past.”

Throughout the road trip in “Hijra,” the 70-year-old grandmother relives her childhood while passing through the routes along which she migrated with her father as a young girl.

“The whole story is about different generations of women and we see it through the eyes of Janna — the youngest granddaughter,” Ameen tells Arab News, adding that, while the film is about a young Saudi girl getting to know her country, she also gets to discover the stories of the women in her family and how they view the ideas of freedom and identity.

“With all the changes happening and us having more freedom than we used to have as Saudi women, I fear that we’re not paying enough tribute to the older generation of Saudi women,” Ameen says. “I think what they have in common is — as cheesy as it sounds — strength and freedom. The grandmother in the story might seem like this traditional, strict, religious woman, but she is strong and free. I would never describe my grandmothers or my mother as weaker than we are. I would actually describe them as much stronger and much freer, but maybe within their own thoughts.”

But Ameen is also aware of how she has benefited from the social change that has swept through the Kingdom in recent years. Ƶ’s embrace of the film industry is seen in international film festivals across the globe but also locally as the government helps promote local talent. “Hijra,” for example, was supported by Ithra, NEOM, Film AlUla — the Royal Commission for AlUla’s film agency, and the Daw Initiative Saudi Film Commission. 

“I was thankful to have Neom and AlUla, without (them) securing such locations would not have been possible,” Ameen says.

“Hijra” is also co-produced by the Red Sea Fund, a funding program under the Red Sea Film Foundation that has so far supported over 250 films from local and regional filmmakers.

“Receiving funds from our own country is amazing,” Ameen says, adding that young Saudi filmmakers “have no excuse” not to make movies. “Just write your script and apply for the funds and hope for the best,” she says.

For Ameen, filmmaking has been her dream since she was 10. She says she grew up wanting to tell Arab stories that she felt were missing from the big screen. 

“I think it’s a feeling that we all share as Arab filmmakers,” she says. “It’s that question: Where are our voices? So to be able to showcase our stories and where we come from is beautiful.

“It’s been amazing,” she continues. “We shot a very challenging, interesting and exciting film.”

DUBAI: The Toronto Arab Film Festival returns for its sixth annual edition with a diverse lineup from June 20 to 29.

“This year, we are screening over 50 films — both features and shorts — which is our largest number to date … it’s fulfilling to watch the development of the Canadian-Arab film industry in real time,” Rolla Tahir, a Sudanese filmmaker and co-founder of TAF, said.

This year’s program reflects the growing diversity and creative evolution of Arab cinema, with some well-known filmmakers participating.

“We’re seeing a notable rise in genre films, especially horror and sci-fi. For example, there’s a horror film from Tunisia and a short program dedicated entirely to sci-fi and horror,” Tahir said.

Participants this year include Lebanese filmmaker Mira Shabib with her film “Arze’” and “Back to Alexandria” by Tamer Ruggli starring Lebanese actress Nadine Labaki.

TAF has also become a valuable platform for professional development, offering networking opportunities for both emerging and established talent.

“This year, we’re introducing an informal industry meet-and-greet — a casual networking event with no structured pitches,” Tahir explained.

The event is designed to create a relaxed environment where Arab filmmakers can connect with industry professionals, ask candid questions, and introduce their projects without the pressure of formal presentations.

The festival’s mission may seem simple — to raise awareness of Arab cinema among Canadian audiences — but achieving that impact requires a deliberate strategy.

It is one that Tahir and her co-founders have refined over the years.

“Each year, we collaborate with other festivals to co-present films and expand outreach beyond Arab audiences,” she said.

For Tahir, the appeal of Arab cinema to non-Arab audiences comes naturally, thanks to the enduring quality and resilience of the work itself.

“What stands out is perseverance. Regardless of what’s happening in our countries or personal lives, Arab filmmakers continue telling their stories.”

It is that very perseverance — expressed through everything from harrowing documentaries to satirical comedies — that gives Arab filmmakers their distinct voice.

“I want people to know we’re still making films — and that we’re making different, bold, and innovative ones,” Tahir said.

DUBAI: Ƶ’s Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud joined the UK’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Royal Ascot, one of the most prestigious equestrian racing events in the world.

Prince Faisal appeared alongside the British royals in the lead royal carriage that opened the official procession at the racecourse, just south of Windsor in the UK.  

Lady Sarah Keswick also joined the lead carriage alongside Prince Faisal, King Charles III and Queen Camilla. A close friend of the queen, she is a key member of the Queen’s Companions.

Following the royal procession, Prince Faisal, a grandson of King Abdulaziz and son of King Salman, joined members of the British royal family, including Princess Beatrice and Zara Tindall, in the royal enclosure to watch the first day of races.

Royal Ascot remains a major fixture on the British social calendar, drawing global political and royal elites.

Arab royalty has played an increasingly visible role at the event in recent years. In 2024, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa of Bahrain — the crown prince and prime minister — attended the event as a guest of honor, representing Bahrain’s royal family.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, has become a prominent figure in the racing world through his Wathnan Racing team. 

The organization has achieved notable success at Royal Ascot, including a win in the 2023 Gold Cup.

DUBAI: Dubai-based designer Alina Anwar, founder of Alina Anwar Couture, this week appeared on a digital billboard in Times Square, New York.

Well known for dressing celebrities in Hollywood and Bollywood, including Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Kareena Kapoor and Idina Menzel, Anwar has expanded her reach internationally with her gowns and suits.

The billboard featured Anwar, who is famous for her structured silhouettes and feminine designs, wearing a red sequined skirt from her own collection, accompanied by her brand’s statement: “My aim is to empower women through powerful dressing and to set them on a path of personal freedom and possibilities.”

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

In a statement she said: “I created this brand to empower women, to make them feel confident, unstoppable and seen. To have that vision now broadcast in Times Square is surreal, but it’s also just the beginning.”

In 2019, her work gained global attention when US singer Mariah Carey wore one of her designs in a remake of the “All I Want for Christmas Is You” music video, released to mark the song’s 25th anniversary. Carey wore a pine green, fully sequined, long-sleeved cocktail dress with a scooped neckline, designed by Anwar.

Anwar is not the only regional figure to appear on a Times Square billboard.

Several Arab artists have featured in recent years.

Egyptian singer Amr Diab became the first Arab musical artist to appear on a Spotify billboard in Times Square in 2019.

Since then, others have followed, including Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna, who was featured in December as part of Spotify Arabia’s “EQUAL” campaign spotlighting female artists from the region.

British Lebanese actress Razane Jammal authors children’s book

DUBAI: British Lebanese actress Razane Jammal is set to release a children’s book titled “Lulu & Blu.”

The actress, famous for her roles in Netflix series “The Sandman” and “Paranormal,” took to social media on Sunday to share the news, writing: “What started as a little story I wrote seven years ago turned into a book for your little ones. I’ve poured my (heart) into this and I’m thrilled to invite you all to our first launch in Beirut.”

The launch event is scheduled to take place on June 25 at community space Minus 1 in the Lebanese capital. The actress will perform a reading of the children’s story, which tells the tale of a “vegetarian lioness, a friendly fish and their most unusual friendship,” according to the author.

Published by Turning Point Books, the story was illustrated by Sasha Haddad, a Lebanese illustrator who graduated from Cambridge School of Arts in 2014.

In the role that arguably shot her to stardom, Jammal played Lyta Hall in 2022’s “The Sandman,” based on the legendary graphic novels.

Her character dreams of her dead husband each night, slowly realizing that he is not a figment of her imagination but is hiding out in the dream world.

It is a part that Jammal managed to play truthfully with subtlety — a subtlety for which she credited her mother in a previous interview with Arab News.

“I’ve always been extra, and my mom was far more subtle than I am. I had to fine-tune myself to vibrate on her frequency, a frequency that was very sweet and very raw, and vulnerable and nurturing. I took that from her.

“I grew up having a simple, community-based life in a place where you have 500 mothers and everyone feeds you and you feel safe — even if it’s not safe at all. At the same time we went through so many traumas, from civil wars to assassinations to losing all our money in another financial crisis.”

DUBAI: Some of the region’s most celebrated content creators — including Bahrain’s Omar Farooq, the UAE’s Anas Bukhash, Morocco’s Taha Essou, Palestine’s Haifa Beseisso and Egypt’s Sherif Nabil — have premiered powerful short films in collaboration with YouTube to mark the platform’s 20th anniversary.

“For years, creating and distributing entertainment was limited to major studios. These creators, who amass billions of views across their channels, showcased deeply personal stories that transcend borders and languages, highlighting YouTube’s role as a platform for emotional storytelling and global connection.

The shift reflects a wider trend across the region with YouTube creators across the Middle East and North Africa rapidly becoming entertainment startups.

Bukhash’s signature charm and curiosity is reflected in his film “ABtalks Diaries: Korea Edition.” The work follows him on a journey through South Korea where he interviews chefs, artists, and members of the public.

Despite a glaring language barrier, Bukhash draws out surprisingly intimate moments, proving that vulnerability is a universal language. “We did this because we realized Arabs are obsessed with K-Pop,” Bukhash joked on stage.

In “Into the Dark,” Beseisso documents her four-day stay in a darkness retreat. Blending humor and reflection, her film becomes a deeply personal meditation on silence, emotion and reconnection — with herself and others.

“I heard about the darkness retreat from a friend and was intrigued,” she told Arab News. “I went, closed my eyes for three days, and it turned out to be one of my favorite experiences.”

In “Into the Fire: Mount Ijen,” Nabil documents the harsh realities of sulfur miners working in Indonesia’s active volcanic mountain. He exposes the conditions these workers face and the generational impact of their labor.

“YouTube gives you that intimacy,” Nabil said. “It’s a challenge, but it’s rewarding.”

The connection between these filmmakers lies in their ability to confront discomfort, explore untold stories, and share them with candor.

“This event is not for us,” Bukhash reflected. “It’s for the people at home wondering if they should start, and need that extra push.”
