2,000 people celebrate Saudi National Day with historic run through Jeddah

Men, women and children take part in the Jeddah Green Spirit Run on Friday.
  • ‘It’s a great patriotic community event,’ organizer Khalid Yamani says
  • 6th annual Green Spirit Run comprised 5 km and 2 km races

JEDDAH: About 2,000 men, women and children took part in the Jeddah Green Spirit Run on Friday, setting off from Bab Jadeed in the heart of the city’s Historic District.

Organized by Masafat Club, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, Sports for All Federation and Jeddah Historic District, the 5 km and 2 km races were held to mark Saudi National Day.

“This event is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of our nation’s unity, diversity and shared spirit,” said Khalid Yamani, president of Masafat.

“It’s a great patriotic community event and open to all family members of all age categories and all nationalities. It is a great occasion for showing our spirit, enthusiasm and patriotism for this beloved country.”

Yamani said he was delighted at how many people had taken part.

“The whole idea of Green Spirit Run was to rally residents of Jeddah to come and celebrate National Day together through sports. Around 2,000 responded to the call, which exceeded the target that we thought would be achievable.”

Now in its sixth year, the annual event combines the runs with displays of cultural traditions and lots of family entertainment.

Both races started at Bab Jadid and took in the Historical Hajj Pilgrimage Route, Bab Al Bunt, Beit Nassif, Al Falah School and other significant landmarks.

Abdul Mohsen Al-Najjar took part in the 5 km race alongside his son, Adel. He said he had been a regular walker for 20 years but this was the first time he had entered a fun run.

“Celebrating our National Day along with all these runners is really something … I brought my son with me … to make him enjoy the run with pride as a Saudi.”

One of the oldest competitors was 70-year-old Hassan Al-Twairqi.

“I have been running for many years and I will never stop doing what I love,” he said. “I walk and run every day and it is becoming a lifestyle for me. Today, we celebrate our National Day … and I am very proud to be part of this run.”

Louis Tanjani, a Filipino who works for a private company in Jeddah, said he never missed an opportunity to celebrate Saudi National Day.

“It is a special day for this great country and it is our duty to celebrate with our fellow Saudis. Running today is a way to express our love to this country,” he said.

The winner of the 5 km race was Abdullah Al-Hasoli in a time of 14:59, while Mohammed Nabil was first home in the 2 km event in a time of 9:58.

  • Tsahkna said: We are living in very intense times. And the Israeli attack against Qatar, we have loudly condemned
  • He confirmed Estonia will join the declaration on two states at the upcoming UN General Assembly and said he was optimistic about the forthcoming Saudi-French summit

RIYADH: Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has strongly condemned Israel’s airstrike on the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday, describing it as a violation of sovereignty and warning of a dangerous erosion of international law.

Speaking to Arab News during a visit to Ƶ this week, Tsahkna said: “We are living in very intense times. And the Israeli attack against Qatar, we have loudly condemned.

“We discussed this matter as well, with his highness, the (Saudi) foreign minister. Our position is very clear. This is a question of sovereignty, which is, for Estonia, a question of principle.”

The strike, which targeted senior Hamas leaders, even while Gaza ceasefire talks were ongoing, killed six people, including a Qatari security officer. Qatar denounced it as a grave violation of international law, with widespread international criticism following.

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Tsahkna reiterated Estonia’s long-standing stance. “Estonia has had a very clear position over the years in supporting the two-state solution, and that is the only way out from this conflict,” he said. “Unfortunately, we don’t see the progress and goodwill as well. And of course, the attack against Qatar doesn’t support this process at all because Qatar and also Ƶ and many other countries here in the region are playing the key role for bringing these negotiations together.”

He confirmed Estonia will join the declaration on two states at the upcoming UN General Assembly and said he was optimistic about the forthcoming Saudi-French summit on the issue in New York.

The foreign minister's statements to Arab News comes at a time when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will seek sanctions and a partial trade suspension against Israel over the war in Gaza.

RIYADH: Ƶ rejects and condemns Israeli attacks in the region, including “the brutal aggression against” Qatar, the Kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said on Wednesday.

In an annual address to the Shoura Council that he delivered on behalf of King Salman, the crown prince said Tuesday’s attack that targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital Doha and killed six people, necessitates Arab, Islamic, and international action to confront such aggression.

International measures to deter the Israeli military from their criminal practices of destabilizing the region’s security and stability are also needed, the crown prince said.

  • The meeting was held alongside the fourth World Irrigation Forum and was attended by members of the high-level advisory group

RIYADH: The Saudi Irrigation Organization participated in the third meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The meeting was held alongside the fourth World Irrigation Forum and was attended by members of the high-level advisory group, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Mohammed bin Zaid Abu-Haid, the organization’s CEO, said that irrigation is no longer just an agricultural issue but a strategic matter tied to national resilience, food security, and environmental sustainability.

He said water-scarce countries face major challenges, since agriculture consumes the largest share of water, while the Kingdom’s main agricultural water sources are largely non-renewable — making this a strategic priority for Ƶ’s water sector.

Abu-Haid highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to develop sustainable and reusable water sources, with the organization leading the transition through capacity building, sector excellence, and regulation to ensure sustainability.

He concluded by inviting the commission’s members and international partners to participate in the 11th World Water Forum, scheduled for 2027 in Riyadh.

Meeting participants emphasized that modernizing irrigation and agricultural infrastructure, based on integrated water resources management, is essential for sustainable food security amid climate change, water scarcity, and rising food demand.

RIYADH: Misk Art Institute, a subsidiary of Misk Foundation, has announced the 10th edition of the Masaha Residency program, which runs from Sept. 14 to Dec. 11, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Under the theme “At the Edge of Knowing,” the initiative provides a dynamic space for creative experimentation and interdisciplinary artistic exchange.

Focusing on diverse knowledge systems and cultural narratives, the residency supports artists exploring alternative perspectives, engaging with layered truths, and contributing to new narratives rooted in contemporary experience.

Reem Al-Sultan, the institute’s CEO, said: “By nurturing creative artists and cultivating space for exploration and dialogue, we empower the next generation and support the Kingdom’s vision of a vibrant, culturally engaged society.”

Spanning 13 weeks, the program offers studios, weekly mentorship, critique sessions, workshops, studio visits, and opportunities for audience engagement.

As one of Misk Art Institute’s flagship programs, Masaha Residency nurtures the contemporary art ecosystem, fosters experimentation, and builds sustainable artistic networks locally and regionally.

Since its inception, the residency has supported more than 100 artists, providing space for research, critical inquiry, and sustained creative practice.

Previous editions explored themes such as technology, storytelling, and collective memory, the SPA reported.

Organized in collaboration with Banque Saudi Fransi, the 10th edition invites artists to examine boundaries, truth and hidden narratives, contributing to the evolution of local and regional art scenes.
