Gauff rallies against qualifier to reach China Open semis against Badosa
  • Gauff will next play Paula Badosa of Spain, who ended local wild card Zhang Shuai’s unexpected run at the title
  • Italy’s Matteo Berrettini bounced back his Japan Open disappointment last week by squeezing past Christopher O’Connell 7-6, (9) 7-6 (6) in the Shanghai first round

BEIJING: Sixth-ranked Coco Gauff again made a slow start and had to rally to beat Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to make the China Open semifinals on Thursday for a second straight year.

Gauff will next play Paula Badosa of Spain, who ended local wild card Zhang Shuai’s unexpected run at the title.

The No. 115-ranked Yuliia Starodubtseva — who will crack the top 100 for the first time on Monday — had not lost a set in her three matches this week and quickly took the lead, making 10 winners and holding Gauff to zero in an error-strewn first set for the American.

Gauff also lost the first set against Naomi Osaka in the previous round before Osaka retired because of a lower back injury.

Starodubtseva last month became the first woman in the Open era to qualify for all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year, and former US Open champion Gauff found a response against her.

Gauff saved two break points in her opening service game of the second set. A service break propelled her ahead 3-1. After another narrow escape on her next service game, Gauff lost only three more games for the rest of the quarterfinal.

“I can’t control how I play or how she plays, but I can just try to control my mindset and commit to the process,” Gauff said.

Zhang’s drought-busting week came to a shuddering halt as Badosa continued her own resurgence in a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory in their quarterfinal.

The Spaniard has won 28 of her last 35 matches dating to May and made the semifinals of three of her past five tournaments. There was also a run to the US Open quarterfinals last month.

But the story of the week has been the 35-year-old Zhang, who entered the China Open on a 24-match losing streak — the second longest in the Open era — and ranked No. 595. She didn’t drop a set in four previous matches this week.

The Chinese wild card had no answer, though, to Badosa’s fast start as the Spaniard made three service breaks to comfortably claim the opening set.

It was much closer in the second set as Badosa found herself down 3-1. She rallied and edged Zhang in the tiebreak.

Shanghai Masters

Italy’s Matteo Berrettini bounced back from the disappointment of an injury ending his Japan Open last week by squeezing past Christopher O’Connell 7-6, (9) 7-6 (6) in the Shanghai first round.

The Italian, who retired with an abdominal injury in the second round in Tokyo last Friday, had his fitness given a stern examination by the Australian in a lung-busting match lasting two hours, 13 minutes.

Next up for the former Wimbledon finalist is No. 14-ranked Holger Rune.

Other first-round winners included Marcos Giron, David Goffin, Jaume Munar, Zhou Yi, Jakub Mensik and Miomir Kecmanovic.

The 32 seeded players received a first-round bye, including top-ranked Jannik Sinner and second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, who won the China Open against the Italian on Wednesday. Sinner starts against Taro Daniel of Japan, and Alcaraz faces Shang Juncheng of China.

UAE raises medal tally to 12 on fifth day of IMMAF Youth World Championships in Al-Ain
  • The host nation’s podium success includes one gold, two silver, and nine bronze medals

AL-AIN: Day five of the IMMAF Youth World Championships on Friday marked the start of the Youth A (16–17 years) category, widely regarded as the most competitive and technically advanced division of the event.

The UAE raised its medal tally to 12, including one gold, two silver, and nine bronze.

The championship, held in Al-Ain until July 27, is organized under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Abdullah Al-Zaabi, head of the events and activities section at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, said: “Starting the Youth A category is an important part of the championship, where the athletes’ ambition is matched by their advanced skills. We are proud of how well the event is organized and the positive impact it has on both sport and the community.

“Holding the sixth edition in Al-Ain shows our commitment to growing the sport and involving more people. The strong support from our leadership is a big reason for this success and helps the UAE stay a key player in the world of mixed martial arts.”

This year’s edition has seen a noticeable increase in both the number of participating countries and athletes, earning widespread international praise for its organization.

Hosting the event in Al-Ain region has also enhanced community engagement and highlighted the city’s cultural and tourism appeal, adding value to the overall championship experience.

The Youth A competition continues on Saturday, with national teams aiming to improve their standings ahead of the championship’s conclusion on Sunday. Ukraine, the UK, and Tajikistan remain among the top contenders on the medal table.

Niemann, Grace, Meronk tied for individual lead at LIV Golf UK
  • Team leaderboard sees defending UK champions Legion XIII tied with Stinger, Torque

ROCESTER: Similar to last season, Joaquin Niemann entered this week’s LIV Golf UK by JCB as the season-long points leader, with Jon Rahm in hot pursuit. The Torque GC captain is determined to write a different ending this time.

Niemann, a four-time winner this season, shot a bogey-free 65 on Friday at JCB Golf & Country Club to grab a share of the first-round lead with Cleeks GC’s Adrian Meronk and Stinger GC’s Branden Grace.

The trio are one shot ahead of Majesticks’ co-captain Lee Westwood, RangeGoats’ captain Bubba Watson, and Niemann’s Torque teammate Carlos Ortiz.

The team leaderboard is also tightly bunched at the top with defending UK champions Legion XIII tied with Stinger and Torque at 11 under. Six other teams are within five shots of the lead.

Rahm won the individual UK trophy for his first career LIV Golf victory a year ago, using it as a springboard to catch Niemann for the season-long Individual Championship in the regular-season finale.

Niemann entered this week with a 15-point lead over Rahm and is now in a great position to build on his advantage, as Rahm shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 32nd. Crushers’ captain Bryson DeChambeau, who is in third place in the standings, is tied for 11th after a 68.

Based on projections after Friday’s first round, Niemann would leave England with a 44-point lead, which would mean he would be guaranteed pole position in the standings going into the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, to determine the Individual Championship next month.

Niemann, who birdied four of his first six holes, said: “I’m in a really privileged situation to be on top of the rankings and being chased by Jon and Bryson. It just makes me a better athlete. I like that pressure.”

Unlike Niemann, the other two players who share the lead are fighting different battles.

Grace has spent most of the season in the drop zone (49th and below in points) and facing relegation while battling wrist problems, but the South African has found his form recently. He tied for fourth earlier this month in Andalucia, a result that moved him out of the drop zone, and he continued his fine play with a round that started hot (three birdies in his first four holes) and ended the same way.

Meronk, meanwhile, returned to the kind of form on Friday that secured him the season-opening tournament in Riyadh. His 65 was his best score, relative to par, in his last 25 LIV Golf rounds.

The Polish star, who finished with four birdies in his last five holes, said: “Finally, I’m enjoying myself on the course and playing good golf again, which is quite exciting.

“It’s great to be back in this position, and I’m really looking forward to this weekend and to three more tournaments this year.”

Of the top eight players on the leaderboard, three are from England, led by the resurgent Westwood, the 52-year-old legend who tied an Open Championship record last week at Royal Portrush by shooting a back-nine 29.

Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton and the Crushers’ Paul Casey, the other two Englishmen on the front page of the leaderboard, are tied for seventh after shooting 67s.

All six English players on the LIV Golf roster received huge support from a packed and enthusiastic gallery at JCB, which is hosting the tournament for the second successive year and will return as a host course next season.

“It feels like our home event, and it’s always nice to perform in front of home fans,” said Westwood, who played with fellow Englishmen and Majesticks’ teammates Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield on Friday.

The crowd was especially vocal at the par-3 14th. “It’s a fun atmosphere,” said Hatton, who tied for second last year to his captain Rahm. “There were a lot of people there, and the music was good too. I think most of us probably enjoyed a singalong down that hole.”

Excited Marchand relishing reduced schedule in pursuit of medley record

Excited Marchand relishing reduced schedule in pursuit of medley record
  • Marchand will not participate in the butterfly or breaststroke events, leaving the 23-year-old better rested to potentially break Lochte’s 14-year-old record

Leon Marchand is hoping a scaled-back schedule will give him a shot at taking out Ryan Lochte’s long-standing world record in the 200 meters individual medley when the world championships begin in Singapore on Sunday.
The Frenchman was the standout performer in the pool at last year’s Olympics, winning the 200 meters and 400 meters individual medley plus the 200 meters butterfly and 200 meters breaststroke in Paris, but will be swimming a reduced program over the coming eight days of competition.
Marchand will not participate in the butterfly or breaststroke events, leaving the 23-year-old better rested to potentially break Lochte’s 14-year-old record.
“I think this is a transition year for me so I wanted to have a lighter schedule than usual,” Marchand told the media on Saturday. “I wanted to focus on the 200 IM and the 400 IM and the relays with the French team.
“I’m really excited to do less than usual, just to see how far can I go, how fast can I go in the 200 IM.
“I’ve always done the 200 IM as a race before, the same as the rest, so it’ll be fun (to have) a lighter schedule.
“I’m just not used to starting on the Wednesday instead of the first day, which is good because I can finally cheer for my teammates.”
Marchand won gold in the 200 meters and 400 meters IM events at the 2022 and 2023 world championships and is the current world record holder in the longer of the medley events.
Lochte’s world record in the 200 meters individual medley has stood since July 2011, with Marchand swimming just six-hundredths of a second slower than the American’s 1 minute 54.00 second mark when he won Olympic gold last year.
“I’m excited for the Worlds. I want to be close to my (personal bests) in every single one of my races,” said Marchand.
“Of course, I want to break world records in the next few years. I don’t know when that’s going to happen. I still have a lot to do in the swimming world.”

Basilisk’s Joona ‘Serral’ Sotala completes sensational run to seal StarCraft II Championship at Esports World Cup
  • Sotala overcomes challenge from 17 other players to win

RIYADH: Demonstrating elite concentration and consistency, Joona “Serral” Sotala from team Basilisk triumphed in the StarCraft II tournament at the Esports World Cup 2025.

Sotala secured a commanding victory in the grand final against Virtus.pro’s Kim “Classic” Doh-woo in a best-of-nine match. Sotala had already beaten Classic 3-0 earlier in the tournament, when the pair faced off in the group stage.

Showing consistent form and focus, Sotala had remained unbeaten throughout, losing only two maps in the entire tournament. Entering the grand final as favorite, Sotala delivered a display of precise control and dominance, winning 5-2.

Sotala said: “To be honest, after a 2-0 start, I was extremely confident. A couple of hiccups did not bother me too much. It feels absolutely fantastic, this is what I came for, and this is what I’ve got. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Sotala overcame the challenge from 17 other players to win the tournament, claim the $200,000 prize and secure 1,000 Club Championship points for team Basilisk. It also marked Sotala’s third world championship title. He won his first at Intel Extreme Masters Katowice in 2022 and then won again in 2024.

Sotala added: “I improved a lot for this year. I trained hard, I put a lot of effort into it.

“This is the highest achievement you can get. I’m kind of speechless, just incredibly happy.”

The third week of EWC 2025 continues until July 27 with finals across Honor of Kings and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Fast bowler Afridi back in Pakistan squad for white-ball series against West Indies in US
  • Fast bowler Haris Rauf, who suffered a hamstring injury, has recovered and was named in the T20 squad
  • Pakistan’s pace attack was further strengthened Friday with the return of Hasan Ali for both T20s, ODIs

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recalled fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for the white-ball cricket series against West Indies, starting at Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.

The three Twenty20 matches in the US — on July 31, Aug. 2 and 3 — will be followed by three ODI games in Trinidad and Tobago.

Afridi, who is also in the ODI squad, was surprisingly excluded from Pakistan’s last two T20 series against Bangladesh despite leading Lahore Qalandars to its third Pakistan Super League title in the last four years with a rich haul of 19 wickets this year.

In Afridi’s absence, Pakistan routed Bangladesh 3-0 at home but lost 2-1 to Bangladesh at Dhaka in a series which ended Thursday.

Fast bowler Haris Rauf, who was forced to miss the series against Bangladesh because of a hamstring injury he sustained during Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US, has recovered and was named in the T20 squad.

Pakistan’s pace attack was further strengthened Friday with the return of Hasan Ali for both T20s and ODIs against West Indies.

The selectors dropped pace bowlers Abbas Afridi and Salman Mirza, who both participated in the T20 series in Bangladesh, and retained all-rounders Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz.

Middle-order batter Hasan Nawaz is the only uncapped player named in the ODI squad. Nawaz scored Pakistan’s fastest-ever T20 century against New Zealand in March this year.

Salman Ali Agha will continue to lead the T20 side while wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was named skipper for the ODI series.

Twenty20 squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem.

ODI squad: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Salman Ali Agha, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem.
