Overcoming AI challenges for Saudi Vision 2030

Short Url

萝莉视频鈥檚 Vision 2030 agenda aims to diversify the economy and reduce oil dependency through transformative reforms, with artificial intelligence playing a central role. However, several challenges must first be overcome if 萝莉视频 hopes to become a regional technology hub.

One of the key steps for 萝莉视频 to maintain its control over strategic interests while enhancing its global AI leadership is to strengthen its National AI Strategy. It would also help the Kingdom to find the right balance between local industry development and international collaboration.

This involves forming strategic alliances with global AI leaders, nurturing local enterprises, and establishing AI research centers in partnership with international tech firms and universities. These efforts will facilitate knowledge transfer and promote indigenous innovation, creating a balanced AI ecosystem.

The Kingdom needs to establish robust AI governance frameworks that ensure AI鈥檚 ethical use and compliance with national regulations and cultural values. This could be achieved by setting up an independent regulatory body to define and enforce AI ethics and standards.

This body would coordinate closely with global entities to adopt best practices while customizing regulations to local contexts, including issues such as privacy, data security and the impact of AI on employment.

Overcoming technological challenges is a vital aspect that requires significant investment in AI research and infrastructure. 萝莉视频 should boost funding for university-based AI research and provide incentives for businesses developing AI technologies.

By addressing AI challenges in terms of strategic focus, governance, technological barriers, digital divide and sustainability challenges, 萝莉视频 can leverage AI to drive economic growth and innovation.

Public-private partnerships will be crucial for building advanced computational infrastructures necessary for AI processing, thereby advancing sectors such as smart cities and health care.

萝莉视频鈥檚 commitment to ensuring equitable distribution of the benefits from AI technologies calls for accelerated efforts to promote AI literacy and accessibility across all regions.

National programs aimed at promoting AI education at various levels, coupled with the expansion of technology access throughout the Kingdom, will help to improve AI usage.

Mobile tech hubs and community training centers could become key resources for AI education and technology access, particularly in rural areas.

Integrating AI applications with sustainable practices is essential, especially given 萝莉视频鈥檚 environmental commitments. The Kingdom should focus on developing energy-efficient AI systems and investing in renewable energy sources dedicated to powering AI infrastructure.

Collaborating with international green tech companies can bring advanced, energy-efficient technologies to the Saudi market, aligning AI development with environmental sustainability goals.

By addressing AI challenges in terms of strategic focus, governance, technological barriers, digital divide and sustainability challenges, 萝莉视频 can leverage AI to drive economic growth and innovation.

Effective management across these areas will not only support 萝莉视频鈥檚 strategic interests but also position it as a global leader in AI technology, catalyzing its transformation into a diversified and sustainable economy.

Looking back at Giorgio Armani鈥檚 ties with the Middle East

DUBAI: Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who turned the concept of understated elegance into a multibillion-dollar fashion empire, has died, his fashion house confirmed. He was 91.
Armani died at home, the fashion house said. Armani, one of the most recognizable names and faces in the global fashion industry, missed Milan Fashion Week in June 2025 for the first time during the previews of Spring-Summer 2026 menswear to recover from an undisclosed condition. He was planning a major event to celebrate 50 years of his signature Giorgio Armani fashion house during Milan Fashion Week this month.

Armani was known for his ties to the Middle East, and received a UAE golden visa in 2021,  which gave him 10-year residency in recognition of his contribution to the international fashion scene.

Armani was given the UAE golden visa by Major General Mohamed Ahmed Al-Marri, Director General of General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.

Dubai is home to the Armani hotel, which is housed in the Burj Khalifa.

In another show of his close relationship with the city, the designer staged an exclusive fashion show at the hotel in 2021, which marked the 10th anniversary of the hotel and the 40th anniversary of the Armani brand.

In March, Diriyah Company announced the launch of Armani Residences Diriyah, marking the Italian design house鈥檚 first foray into the Saudi market.

Lebanese Jordanian actress Andria Tayeh serves as the brand鈥檚 regional beauty ambassador.

Starting with an unlined jacket, a simple pair of pants and an urban palette, Armani put Italian ready-to-wear style on the international fashion map in the late 1970s, creating an instantly recognizable relaxed silhouette that has propelled the fashion house for half a century.

From the executive office to the Hollywood screen, Armani dressed the rich and famous in classic tailored styles, fashioned in super-soft fabrics and muted tones. His handsome black tie outfits and glittering evening gowns often stole the show on award season red carpets.

At the time of his death, Armani had put together an empire worth over $10 billion, which along with clothing included accessories, home furnishings, perfumes, cosmetics, books, flowers and even chocolates, ranking him in the world鈥檚 top 200 billionaires, according to Forbes.

The designer also owned several bars, clubs, restaurants and his own basketball team EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, better known as Olympia Milano. Armani opened more than than 20 restaurants from Milan to Tokyo since 1998, and two hotels, one in Dubai in 2009 and another in Milan, in 2010.

Armani himself was the foundation of his style

Armani style began with Giorgio Armani himself, from the penetrating blue eyes framed in a permanent tan and early-age shock of silver hair, to the trademark jeans and t-shirt work clothes and the minimalist decoration of his private homes.

Sindh farmers torn between fear and hope as floods head downstream

Sindh farmers torn between fear and hope as floods head downstream
  • Farmers in coastal areas say river water prevents seawater intrusions, provides better catch for fishermen
  • Hydrologist says floods cause destruction but also keep Pakistan鈥檚 plains fertile, protects them from salt

KARACHI: While Pakistan鈥檚 southern Sindh province remains busy with safety precautions as it braces for floods heading downstream from Punjab, farmers in the province鈥檚 coastal district await the arrival of river water, saying it would prevent the sea from swallowing their lands and provide better catch for fishers.

Devastating floods in Punjab have killed 43 and displaced more than 1.8 million people, authorities have said. Excess releases from Indian dams and heavy monsoon showers have destroyed crops in Punjab, caused rivers to swell and affected more than 3.6 million people.

Sharjeel Inam Memon, information minister of the Sindh government, said floodwaters are expected to enter the province at Guddu Barrage between September 5 and 6, adding that the administration was 鈥渇ully prepared鈥 to deal with the situation.

鈥淎ll the arrangements have been made, the government has established relief camps and is evacuating the population along with animals and livestock,鈥 he told Arab News, adding that he could not rule out the possibility of 鈥渟uper floods.鈥

The term is used by officials in Pakistan to describe exceptionally high flood levels that exceed normal seasonal flows, often overwhelming barrages and embankments.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warns that floods heading downstream may cause similar devastation in Sindh, Gulab Shah, a 52-year-old farmer from Jhaloo village near the coastal town of Keti Bunder in Thatta district, waits for the river water to arrive.

Seawater intrusion into the delta, where the Indus River meets the Arabian Sea in Sindh, has triggered the collapse of farming and fishing communities.

鈥淥ur ancestors have lived here for centuries,鈥 Shah told Arab News. 鈥淭here was a time when we owned thousands of acres of land, but due to the drying up of the delta, the sea has swallowed it all.鈥

Shah said his family of 100 people, comprising 12 brothers and two sisters, now makes do with only 350 acres.

鈥淓ven on this land, rice no longer grows as it used to, and the banana crop has completely vanished,鈥 he rued.

Shah says flood upstream sometimes translates into survival for areas downstream.

鈥淲e feel sorrow for those affected by floods in other regions, but whenever floods come, they bring water into the Indus River,鈥 he said.

DYING RIVERS, INFERTILE PLAINS

Dr. Hassan Abbas, a hydrologist who earned his doctorate in water resources at Michigan State University, agrees the Indus Delta has shrunk and 鈥渁lmost died because the water did not reach there.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 just as important for the rivers to reach the sea as it is for the water to flow from your body,鈥 Dr. Abbas explained.

The hydrologist said Pakistan鈥檚 rivers have gotten smaller due to dams, saying that they have almost become almost dry. He said due to this, ecological services and environmental systems are 鈥渄ying and under extreme stress.鈥

Dr. Abbas added that when floods halt upstream, salts that once washed into the sea remain on farmland, damaging the soil.

鈥淎n estimated 60 million tons of salt, every year, used to be washed by the river into the sea,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow, not even 10 million tons make it there.鈥

He noted that while floods cause destruction, they also make Pakistan鈥檚 plains fertile.

鈥淵ou have to adapt to the floods,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his system of floods, if it doesn鈥檛 exist, then your food basket will collapse.鈥

鈥橫AJOR THREAT FROM THE SEA鈥

Along the coast, residents describe how the sea has encroached over the years as freshwater declines. Younus Khaskheli, chairman of the Sindh-based fisherfolk association MaHajjiri Samaji Sangat, recalled how dams built on rivers since 1960 have led to a decline in the mud and silt that flowed downstream.

鈥淪o many islands have been cut off [now] that the sea is four to six kilometers ahead,鈥 Khaskheli said. 鈥淔rom 1960 till now, about 1.2 million people migrated from there and came here.鈥

Khaskheli said 80 percent of the people who migrated were from the fishing communities. Mangrove forests, once spread over a million hectares in the province, had now shrunk to around 70,000 hectares due to the drying riverbed.

鈥淭he people who say that the water of the river Sindh is wasted in the sea are not aware of the ecosystem,鈥 he explained. 鈥淭his is a natural process. The river brings silage and soil with it. The ecosystem circulates in this way.鈥

Memon shared Khaskheli鈥檚 concerns about the Indus Delta.

鈥淭he Indus Delta needs water every year,鈥 he said, adding that it does not receive sufficient flows due to the decreased level of water in the Indus.

鈥淭his time there are chances, yes, that we will fulfill the requirement of the delta,鈥 Memon added.

For others like Manzoor Ali Rind, who resides in Sindh鈥檚 Dadu district hundreds of kilometers away from the sea, previous floods wreaked havoc. Rind cultivates around 10 acres of farmland in Bux Ali Rind village in Dadu.

鈥淲hen I hear the word flood, it takes me 15 years back when it wiped out my rice crops,鈥 Rind told Arab News, recalling the devastation of the 2010 floods.

鈥淚t took me years to stand on my feet again.鈥

But for farmers like Shah, who reside in coastal areas, the approaching sea serves as a stark reminder. He said his village used to be 25 kilometers away from the sea.

Now, it is only three kilometers away.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 know when the sea will swallow the little land we have left,鈥 Shah said. 鈥淲e want to be protected from the sea, and for that, it is essential that water flows in the river.鈥

After monsoon rains lashed Sindh in June, Shah saw something he hadn鈥檛 in a decade: the hilsa fish.

鈥淣ow, whenever water comes, whether from rains or floods, we feel happy,鈥 Shah said. 鈥淏ecause it brings prosperity for us and also protects us from a major threat from the sea.鈥

Spectacular celestial events in Saudi skies this September

September heralds a series of celestial events eagerly awaited by astronomers. (SPA)
  • Total lunar eclipse or 鈥榖lood moon鈥 set for Sept. 7
  • Fascinating phenomena, scientists tell Arab News

RIYADH: September heralds a series of celestial events eagerly awaited by astronomers, which marks the changing of seasons on Earth and a total lunar eclipse popularly known as a 鈥渂lood moon.鈥

According to Jeddah Astronomy Society Director Majed Abu Zahra, the month鈥檚 highlights include the total lunar eclipse on Sept. 7, visible in 萝莉视频, the Arab world, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

This will be the only total lunar eclipse of the year in this region. Such eclipses are rare for a specific geographic location.

Speaking to Arab News Dr. Abouazza Elmhamdi, associate professor of physics and astronomy at King Saud University, said lunar eclipses represent a 鈥渕ost predictable and visually fascinating phenomena.鈥

This occurs when 鈥淓arth aligns precisely between the sun and moon, casting its shadow upon the lunar surface. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to observe with the naked eye and can be witnessed from anywhere on Earth鈥檚 night side.鈥

鈥淥n Sunday evening, Sept. 7, 2025, the Riyadh sky will host a remarkable astronomical display: a total lunar eclipse. As twilight fades, the full moon will rise, already entering Earth鈥檚 shadow, offering observers across the city a rare and captivating view,鈥 said Elmhamdi.

This eclipse belongs to the so鈥慶alled Saros cycle. It is a part of series 128, a family of eclipses repeating every 18 years and 11 days, he said.

During a total eclipse, the moon will appear in shades of copper and red, the result of sunlight scattered and bent through Earth鈥檚 atmosphere, he said.

For Riyadh, the moon will be well above the horizon throughout the total phase. 鈥淪ince the eclipse begins just after sunset, this will be one of the most favorable lunar eclipses in recent years for the region,鈥 said Elmhamdi.

The moon will be approximately 2.6 days before perigee, its closest approach to Earth, making it appear slightly larger than average 鈥 a so鈥慶alled 鈥渟upermoon鈥 eclipse in popular terms, added Elmhamdi.

The AlUla Manara team is organizing an event on Sept. 7 to observe the lunar eclipse.

Specialists will provide live explanations of the eclipse鈥檚 stages, formation, and scientific significance. Attendees will also be able to use special telescopes.

A partial solar eclipse will occur on Sept. 21, but it will not be visible in the Arab world.

On Sept. 21, Saturn will be at opposition, meaning Earth will find itself in-between Saturn and the sun, temporarily lined up.

The following day, Sept. 22, marks the autumnal equinox, when the sun鈥檚 rays fall directly on the equator. This phenomenon occurs twice a year 鈥 once at the start of spring (around March 20) and once at the start of autumn (around Sept 22).

Day and night will be of equal length at the equator, and the event marks the official end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Elmhamdi added: 鈥淪eptember offers additional sky highlights: a close approach of the moon and Venus around mid鈥憁onth, Saturn and Neptune at opposition later in the month, and the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22.

鈥淭his equinox marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere, a moment when day and night are nearly equal in length across the globe.鈥

A rare celestial phenomenon will also be on display, with the shadow of Saturn鈥檚 moon, Titan, crossing the planet鈥檚 disk on Sept. 4 and 20.

For those waking up early in the wee hours, Venus and Jupiter will shine on the eastern horizon.

Moreover, on Sept. 19, the crescent moon will form a striking triangle with Venus and Regulus.

A divisive tournament, The Hundred finally comes of age

A divisive tournament, The Hundred finally comes of age

A divisive tournament, The Hundred finally comes of age
  • Driven by new investors, changes are expected in sponsorship and licensing deals, salaries, draft and retention conditions

The Hundred is over for 2025. At Lords, last Sunday, the Oval Invincibles men鈥檚 team lived up to their name by winning the trophy for the third consecutive year.

The Trent Rockets, winners in 2022, were dispatched in the final. In the women鈥檚 final, the Northern Superchargers beat the Southern Brave.

After five years of getting used to the format, the team names and the garish branding, it has seemed that, whisper it softly, the tournament has gained wider acceptability.

Perhaps the determination, bordering on evangelism, of The Hundred鈥檚 proponents for it to succeed have browbeaten naysayers into submission. Even I have watched much more of it in person than in previous years.

Record attendances were recorded at four different grounds in 2025, including 22,542 at the women鈥檚 final. A total of 580,000 tickets were sold and issued.

The audience demographics were consistent with 2024, with 23 percent junior tickets, 41percent families and 30 percent female buyers. Viewing figures increased in 2025.

In the group stages, Sky Sports鈥 audience for The Hundred rose by an average of 38 percent compared with 2024. BBC Sport experienced 2.2 million online viewing requests in 2025, up from 1.6 million in 2024.

These metrics speak of success, of a sound base on which to build for the future. Yet, The Hundred鈥檚 future is going to be different to its past. How much so will play out over the coming months under the direction of a new board.

This will feature representatives of the England and Wales Cricket Board, the host clubs and investors. The ECB has delegated authority to the board relating to certain aspects of the strategic direction and commercial growth of The Hundred. These include sponsorship and licensing deals, player salaries, player draft and retention conditions.

It is in these areas that changes are anticipated, driven by the new investors. Their combined investment, so far of around $700 million, provides substantial influence.

Until this point, cricket in England and Wales has required the agreement of two-thirds of the constituent counties to implement change. It was always clear, from the beginning of The Hundred concept, that the ECB saw it as a mechanism for diluting the voting power of the counties.

This is now a reality. Even those counties which have retained a 51 percent equity share do not appear to be having things their own way.

A clear case is the Oval Invincibles. It is understood that the name is being consigned to history, replaced by MI London. The Ambani family owns the Mumbai Indians鈥 global portfolio of franchises. This began in the Indian Premier League and has been extended to MI Cape Town, MI Emirates, MI New York and, imminently, London.

There is disappointment amongst Surrey County members that the name could not retain Oval in its title. It is interpreted as the thin end of the wedge, a sign of things to come, in which a majority shareholding does not convey real power.

Less concern has been expressed about other name changes. The Manchester Originals name will change to incorporate 鈥淪uper Giants鈥 to bring it into line with the Lucknow and Durban franchises of the RPSG group. The Northern Superchargers name is likely to be adapted by the 100 percent owners, Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The influence of the India owners and part owners is likely to go far beyond name changes. Coaches and support teams may be changed to align with their teams in other franchise leagues.

There are rumors that The Hundred鈥檚 draft selection system, in which franchises take turns to pick players from a pool, will be replaced with the auction system favored by the IPL.

In turn, this may mean a change to the number of players which can be retained from the 15-person squads. The aim of these systems is to establish competitive balance between squads.

The auction system is more high profile and results in the top players being picked off for eye-watering amounts of money. Its adoption will disrupt the existing teams, a move likely to be unpopular.

The Oval Invincibles, for example, has built its success on its affiliation with the Oval. It has chosen a strong cadre of Surrey players to create a clear identity, retaining this core to generate team spirit and bonding. In recognition of this, supporters have responded by generating an in-match atmosphere that is regarded by commentators as the best on the circuit.

Yet this successful team is at risk of being ripped up. The prospect may please its rivals, but there is a risk of too much change creating confusion for audiences.

The Hundred has a one-month duration, unlike the IPL, which lasts for two months. By the time that people have begun to be accustomed to team compositions, The Hundred is almost over. How much heed the new board will take over warnings not to change too much too soon is unknown.

It has other weighty considerations. One is how it taps into the Indian market, which is four-and-a-half hours ahead of the UK. Currently, men鈥檚 matches, which follow the women鈥檚, are scheduled to end around 9 p.m. BST.

Another consideration is the number of overseas players who will be attracted or allowed. Currently, each squad is permitted three overseas players. It has proved difficult to attract the volume of top men鈥檚 players, largely because of competing T20 tournaments elsewhere or national commitments.

The big question centers on Indian players. If centrally contracted in India, they are not permitted to play in any franchise league, other than the IPL. The presence and influence of Indian owners in The Hundred may start to shift the debate.

In the short term, the example of Ravichandran Ashwin is the most likely model. He has retired from international cricket and declared an ambition to be an 鈥渆xplorer of the game around (the) various leagues.鈥 It is rumored that his first exploration may be the Big Bash League in Australia.

August 2025 marks the end of the beginning for The Hundred. It has survived apathy, suspicion, ridicule and aggressive opposition, bordering on detest.

Despite the format being played nowhere else in the world, it has succeeded in what many thought to be its real purpose, that of attracting external investment into the English and Welsh game. The price to be paid for that outcome will now unfold at the hands of the new owners.

Undoubtedly, The Hundred 2026 will herald in a new era, with significant implications for both audience and player retention, not to mention its potential impact on the structure and shape of the domestic game.

Much depends on the power dynamics of The Hundred鈥檚 new board during this stage of transition.

UK sanctions target Russians linked to deportation of Ukrainian children
  • 鈥淭he Kremlin鈥檚 policy of forced deportations, indoctrination and militarization of Ukrainian children is despicable,鈥 Lammy said
  • The Russian embassy in London said the sanctions were unlawful and based on 鈥渦nfounded claims鈥 from Ukraine about the forcible transfer of children

LONDON: Britain on Wednesday imposed sanctions on 11 more individuals and entities affiliated with the Russian state, targeting those involved in what it said were Moscow鈥檚 attempts to forcibly deport and indoctrinate Ukraine鈥檚 children.
Ukraine says that more than 19,500 children have been taken to Russia or Russian-occupied territory during the war without the consent of family or guardians, calling the abductions a war crime that meets the UN treaty definition of genocide. Moscow has said it was protecting vulnerable children from a war zone.
鈥淭he Kremlin鈥檚 policy of forced deportations, indoctrination and militarization of Ukrainian children is despicable,鈥 foreign minister David Lammy said in a statement, setting out Britain鈥檚 latest round of sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine.
Organizations such as the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation which runs re-education programs for Ukrainian children and teenagers, subjecting them to militaristic training, and its president, Aymani Nesievna Kadyrova, are among those targeted, the statement said. The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans and other penalties.
The Russian embassy in London said the sanctions were unlawful and based on 鈥渦nfounded claims鈥 from Ukraine about the forcible transfer of children.
鈥淲e call upon the UK authorities to refrain from making baseless accusations in future and to avoid hindering the efforts aimed at protecting the rights and interests of minors,鈥 it said in a post on social media.
In March, a report by the United Nations Human Rights Office said Russia had inflicted unimaginable suffering on millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights since its full scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
Kadyrova鈥檚 son Ramzan, head of Russia鈥檚 Muslim Chechnya republic who has sent large contingents of troops to boost Russian ranks in Ukraine, published a statement in Russian via his channel on Telegram messaging app in defense of his mother.
鈥淪he always helps victims of war and supports the poor and disadvantaged around the world,鈥 said the translated comments, which also said that she was not involved in politics.
鈥淭hese actions prove that the West is guided neither by morality nor by law, but acts out of hatred and Russophobia ... This is the lowest level of rotten Western politics,鈥 he added.
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued warrants for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children鈥檚 rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova related to the abduction of Ukrainian children. Russia denounced the warrants as 鈥渙utrageous and unacceptable.鈥
