Frankly Speaking: Does Riyadh prefer Trump or Harris?
  • Saudi commentator Ali Shihabi says Kingdom does not have a favorite but is looking to work closely with whichever candidate wins to help resolve the Middle East conflict

DUBAI: 萝莉视频 does not have a favorite in the US presidential race, and would enjoy strong relations with either Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris, Saudi political commentator Ali Shihabi has said.

According to him, the Kingdom鈥檚 priority is to use its relationship with Washington to address pressing regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

鈥淚 think the Kingdom is in a very advantageous position of having excellent ties with both parties,鈥 Shihabi said on the Arab News current affairs program 鈥淔rankly Speaking鈥 just days before American voters are due to go to the polls.

鈥淓ither option works out well for the Kingdom, which is quite a unique state of affairs really in situations like this.鈥

Shihabi said 萝莉视频 may have historically leaned more toward the Republican Party, but the situation is different this time around, as in recent years the Kingdom鈥檚 relationship with the Democrats has vastly improved.

鈥淭hings have gone very well with the Democrats 鈥 not well early on, as everybody knows,鈥 he added, referring to President Joe Biden鈥檚 threat to make 萝莉视频 鈥渢he pariah that they are鈥 when he was campaigning for the presidency in 2019.

However, 鈥渢he Ukraine-Russian war helped drive home the strategic importance of the Kingdom,鈥 compelling the Biden administration to reassess its stance and to view 萝莉视频 as a stabilizing influence in the region, Shihabi said.

鈥淣ow, really, the relationship is as good as it could be at a deep institutional level,鈥 he told 鈥淔rankly Speaking鈥 host Katie Jensen. 鈥淎nd that would be expected to continue with a new Democratic administration.

鈥淎 new Democratic administration would be expected to carry on and adopt a lot of, if not all, the work that the previous Biden-Harris administration carried out. 鈥淎t the same time, there鈥檚 a very warm relationship with Mr. Trump and the people around him. So it really works out well for the Kingdom either way. And that鈥檚 not a usual situation.

鈥淯sually there has been a preference for Republicans, and ties have been closer under Republican administrations. But I think in this case it works out well, whoever wins.鈥

Shihabi said recognition of the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic importance in the Middle East has established it as a key partner for Washington, regardless of which party is in power.听
Likewise, 萝莉视频 is looking to the US, no matter which candidate wins, to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Kingdom has taken significant steps to advance the two-state solution, having launched a global coalition in September for this purpose. Shihabi believes US involvement is essential for any long-term success.

鈥淎merica is an essential component and American pressure is an essential component,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ithout the US, efforts to push Israel toward a meaningful solution may struggle to gain traction, given that Washington holds unique leverage over Israel.鈥

Shihabi said the attitude of the US toward Israeli actions will significantly impact the prospects for peace. 鈥淯nfortunately, the Biden administration wasn鈥檛 very strong or decisive with Israel,鈥 he added, underscoring the need for firmer American resolve.

Just a few months ago, a historic US-Saudi security pact appeared to be imminent. At that time, bilateral relations appeared poised for a transformative agreement that could have included normalization with Israel.

However, the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that led to Israel鈥檚 invasion of Gaza is seen as having reshaped the political landscape, making such an agreement and Saudi-Israeli normalization unlikely in the near term. 鈥淚t鈥檚 probably completely off the table for the time being, unless there鈥檚 a dramatic shift in the attitude of the Israeli government,鈥 said Shihabi.

While a formal pact may be postponed, Shihabi believes the talks have already yielded closer security ties between the US and 萝莉视频. 鈥淚 think the discussions with America on that file have brought the Kingdom and America very close in sort of a de-facto security arrangement that isn鈥檛 a de-jure one yet,鈥 he said.

Shihabi, who is an author and commentator on the politics and economics of 萝莉视频, believes the next US administration 鈥 whether led by Trump or Harris 鈥 is likely to revisit the normalization talks. Indeed, both candidates have shown interest in brokering peace deals, and 萝莉视频鈥檚 strategic importance in the Middle East ensures that these discussions will remain relevant.

However, Shihabi said much will depend on the next US administration鈥檚 willingness to press Israel toward meaningful concessions for the Palestinians. 鈥淭he Israelis may be miscalculating if they think that Mr. Trump will be completely in their hands,鈥 he said, hinting that the former president鈥檚 potential unpredictability could lead to renewed pressure on Israel if he returns to office.

鈥淎t the same time, the Harris administration will be inheriting a tremendous amount of work that the Harris-Biden administration carried out. So I think both parties will continue to pursue this file.鈥

During a recent roundtable with journalists ahead of last month鈥檚 BRICS Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the US bore responsibility for the worsening Israeli-Palestinian conflict, attributing it to what he called American monopolization of the peace process.

Asked if Russia has enough leverage to deliver a miracle that the Middle East desperately needs, Shihabi said: 鈥淣o. Unfortunately, I don鈥檛 think so.鈥 He believes it is ultimately American pressure that has the greatest impact on Israel.

鈥淲hether it鈥檚 part of the Quartet or whether it鈥檚 not part of the Quartet, it boils down to the backbone that an American president has in standing up to the Israelis,鈥 he said, referring to the joint peace efforts of the US, UN, EU and Russia.

Shihabi cited past examples where US presidents exerted influence over Israel, such as when President Dwight D. Eisenhower forced Israel to withdraw from Egypt鈥檚 Sinai Peninsula in 1956, and when George H. W. Bush offered conditional loans in the 1990s.

While these instances are rare, Shihabi said, they demonstrate that US influence can shift Israeli policy when applied decisively. He remains skeptical that the current Israeli government, with its hardline stance, will make concessions without firm American intervention.

This challenge places considerable responsibility on Washington, as 鈥渢he only party that has real muscle with Israel is America,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he problem is, sometimes it鈥檚 Israel that has muscle in America and not the other way around.

鈥淭he Israelis are very strong in America. They have a very strong lobbying operation. They exert enormous influence through a variety of means.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very rare that you get an American administration that takes out the stick to put the Israelis back into line. It may happen. I wouldn鈥檛 give it a huge amount of hope, but it鈥檚 not impossible.鈥

One of the more surprising developments of this election cycle is the shifting support of Arab-American voters, who according to a recent Arab News-YouGov poll are drawn by a 2 percent margin to Trump over Harris.

Shihabi said the finding likely reflects the voter group鈥檚 disillusionment with the current administration鈥檚 approach to Israel. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e confused, obviously, because the Biden administration has been very weak-kneed with the Israelis, and hasn鈥檛 been exerting enough influence or been adequately restraining them,鈥 he added.

Despite Trump鈥檚 history of supporting Israel, Arab-American voters appear to believe he might take a stronger stance on the Palestinian issue if reelected. Shihabi believes this sentiment has something to do with Trump鈥檚 reputation as a dealmaker and his unpredictable approach to international affairs.

鈥淭here鈥檚 that sense among some people that Trump may surprise us because he鈥檚 a strong individual; he doesn鈥檛 like to be pushed around,鈥 Shihabi said. 鈥淗e鈥檒l be in his final term, and he loves making deals, and he鈥檇 love to solve the Middle Eastern question.

鈥淚 think the Israelis may find that they don鈥檛 get what they exactly wished for if Mr. Trump wins 鈥 He may surprise us all.鈥

Arab Americans have shown particular concern for the situation in Gaza, with polls indicating the issue ranks higher in importance than domestic matters such as healthcare or the economy.

According to Shihabi, the focus on Gaza revealed by the survey is a reflection of the emotional and cultural impact the conflict has had on Arab-American voters. 鈥淭here鈥檚 been such wanton criminality in the way that the Israelis have behaved, and such intense human suffering, that it鈥檚 affected them like it鈥檚 affected so many other people,鈥 he said.

The potential influence of the Arab-American vote may come into play in swing states such as Michigan, where even a small margin could sway the outcome. 鈥淚t鈥檒l be very nice if the Arab-American vote ends up making an impact, either way, because that will show that the Arab Americans are beginning to develop some political muscle,鈥 Shihabi said.

While it remains uncertain whether their votes will tip the scales, he added, the predicted increased voter turnout among Arab Americans indicates a growing political awareness and engagement within the community.

With the leads enjoyed by Harris and Trump in different polls still razor thin, Shihabi would not be drawn on who he thought will be the likely winner. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a coin toss as to which one of them will win,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l just have to wait.鈥

Abdullah Alshammasi, a longtime engineer at Aramco, spoke to Arab News about how the company influenced more than just the oil and gas industry and impacted generations of employees and locals.

He said: 鈥淭he company certainly had lasting consequences on the earliest generations that worked in it.

Aramco鈥檚 history is the modern history of the communities that lived in the Eastern Province.

鈥淭he fact is, since the company was established it needed a knowledgeable workforce, so a campaign of education was also established, and it steadily increased in depth from manual skills to softer, more intellectual skills.鈥

The exhibition also showcases vintage safety posters that were originally used to display workplace rules. These posters show how design and language have changed over the years, highlighting the changes in style and communication.

This section of the exhibition captures the story鈥檚 understated honesty, letting ordinary items like posters, letters, and tools tell the story of values, habits, and shifting responsibilities.

As visitors explore the exhibition, they can see how the company鈥檚 global outlook has influenced not only individual lives but also the nation鈥檚 perspective.

Alshammasi explained: 鈥淕enerations have now been everywhere around the globe, studying at the best institutions, bringing back with them a better sense of the world, widening their horizons and, therefore, our societies and culture.鈥

鈥淎ramcorama鈥 ultimately reflects how modern Saudi society was built; not just through buildings and oil fields, but also through education, progress, and mindset.

Alshammasi said: 鈥淚t tells me that Aramco is as old as our modern lives.鈥

This fact is especially evident in the Eastern Province, where the company鈥檚 presence reshaped daily life, and Alshammasi added: 鈥淎ramco鈥檚 history is the modern history of the communities that lived in the Eastern Province. Their lives were directly affected by the company, for good and for ill.鈥

The exhibition does not hide that tension, but invites reflection on both progress and its costs, what was gained and what may have been lost.

鈥淎ramcorama鈥 does not ask visitors to celebrate or criticize, but to notice, reflect, and form their own opinions.

It respects the complexity of history and shows how innovation, labor, infrastructure, and community are all deeply connected.

Saudi cookbooks for kids win 鈥楤est in World鈥 Gourmand award
  • 鈥楢klana鈥檚鈥 13 volumes document Saudi culinary and cultural traditions
  • Building a 鈥榞olden age鈥 of literature for kids, publisher tells Arab News

JEDDAH: A children鈥檚 cookbook showcasing 萝莉视频鈥檚 rich culinary heritage has won one of the world鈥檚 top awards.

Layal Idriss received the 2024 鈥淏est in the World鈥 Gourmand Cookbook Award in Cascais, Portugal, recently for her work as the creative director, publisher, and visual storyteller behind the 鈥淎klana鈥 book series.

The series is an ambitious project documenting the Kingdom鈥檚 culinary culture for children.

Speaking to Arab News, Idriss described the award moment as 鈥渢ruly overwhelming.鈥

The co-founder of Dar Waraqa and Radish House Agency added: 鈥淚 was honored to be invited to speak on the Gourmand stage about 鈥楢klana鈥 from Saudi Books, highlighting Saudi culinary food and culture.

鈥淭o stand there, representing a project that is so dear to my heart, filled me with immense gratitude.鈥

The 鈥淎klana鈥 series, created in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Culture鈥檚 Culinary Arts Commission and published by Dar Waraqa, comprises 13 individually designed books, each dedicated to one of the Kingdom鈥檚 provinces.

The series was envisioned as a 鈥渉olistic cultural journey鈥 for children, designed to inform and delight local and global readers alike.

Idriss explained that 鈥渨ith every dot we put on paper, we recognized that we were serving a global readership.鈥

To ensure international accessibility, the books were translated into English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

In her role as creative director, she led a team of four to five artists per book, each handpicked to reflect the cultural tone and visual storytelling of the region they depicted.

鈥淭he goal was not just beautiful illustrations, but visuals that truly captured the essence of the narrative and cultural elements,鈥 she said.

Ensuring artistic and editorial cohesion across all 13 volumes was no small feat: 鈥淒irecting multiple artists while maintaining a unified look and feel was a complex yet rewarding challenge.

鈥淔rom initial sketches to final production, I oversaw every step to guarantee consistency in design and storytelling.鈥

Alongside project manager Mohammed Hasanain, Idriss also prioritized premium production quality.

She said: 鈥淲e focused on high-quality production from illustrations to paper believing that a beautifully made book serves as the best messenger for a vibrant culture.鈥

Speaking about what sets 鈥淎klana鈥 apart globally, Idriss highlighted its unique fusion of cultural depth, educational content and visual excellence.

Each book explores not only food but also local traditions, celebrations and natural resources.

鈥淢any cultural cookbooks might offer recipes, but few delve so comprehensively into the lifestyle, celebrations, and natural resources tied to the food presented through such a rich and consistently high-quality visual narrative,鈥 she said.

For Idriss, this award is validation of a lifelong mission.

鈥淧ersonally, this award is an incredibly encouraging milestone. I鈥檝e devoted my life to bookmaking with a clear vision: to contribute to building the golden age of children鈥檚 literature in 萝莉视频,鈥 she said.

While 鈥淎klana鈥 focuses on culinary heritage, Idriss believes the same level of dedication must extend to all genres of children鈥檚 literature in the Kingdom.

鈥淭he underlying passion for creating meaningful and beautifully crafted books remains the same,鈥 she added.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards receive submissions from more than 221 countries and regions.

Every year, the awards ceremony is held in a location known for its gastronomic heritage, attracting publishers, chefs, authors, and journalists from across the globe.

With 鈥淎klana鈥 now part of both the Saudi and global culinary conversation, Idriss hopes it will spark a new wave of culturally grounded publishing initiatives across the Arab world.

鈥溾楢klana鈥檚鈥 success provides a strong model. We hope it inspires future projects in the Kingdom and across the region to delve deeper into cultural exploration, setting new benchmarks for quality in publishing.

鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to continuing this journey, sharing our books globally, as we believe they are vital cultural messengers.鈥

  • Initiative seeks to connect new generations with their heritage and enhance the role of historic documents as primary sources for helping to understand Kingdom鈥檚 past
  • Darah Documents features a digital system that supports browsing and advanced search capabilities

RIYADH: The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives has unveiled the Darah Documents initiative, a project designed to broaden public access to 萝莉视频鈥檚 historic records and deepen national awareness of their significance.

The initiative, which was launched on Monday, seeks to connect new generations with their heritage and enhance the role of historic documents as primary sources for helping to understand the Kingdom鈥檚 past.

Darah spokesperson Sultan Al-Owairdi told Arab News that the foundation is using technology such as artificial intelligence to modernize archival access.

He said that "automated indexing of historical materials using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and text analysis technologies contributes to reducing human effort and accelerating accessibility."

Additional enhancements include AI-powered search tools, contextual linking of historical landmarks, and real-time multilingual translations to broaden global reach. Al-Owairdi further emphasized youth engagement, stating: "Darah is implementing several programs and activities connected to the initiative, targeting young people specifically."

These include training workshops, field visits, and expert dialogues designed to simplify historical concepts in contemporary formats. The foundation also leverages "simplified and appealing digital content that aligns with the interests of the younger generation," encouraging creative contributions to national memory preservation.

At the heart of the initiative is a digital portal and beneficiary services center, which together offer researchers, historians and interested individuals streamlined access to a diverse range of archival materials.

These collections span local and foreign documents, manuscripts, photographs, oral histories and more, covering topics from politics and the economy to society, culture and education.

Darah Documents features a digital system that supports browsing and advanced search capabilities. Users can request documents electronically or explore them directly at the beneficiary services center.

The platform also provides descriptive information and translations for non-Arabic content, making the archives more accessible to a broader audience.

As a nationally recognized authority on historic preservation, the foundation is committed to collecting, organizing, cataloging and digitizing documents according to rigorous scientific and archival standards.

This phased initiative includes ongoing indexing and the release of high-value historic records, ensuring their preservation and optimal use for research and cultural enrichment.

Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, Darah Documents reinforces national identity and supports the Kingdom鈥檚 digital and knowledge transformation by making historic content more widely available.
