  • The development comes days after Israel approved a plan to seize full control of Gaza City
  • Islamabad says the OIC meeting will focus on coordinated response to developments in Gaza

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, will travel to Ƶ to attend an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah on Aug. 25-26, the Pakistani foreign ministry said on Sunday.

The statement comes as Israeli leaders vow to press on with a planned offensive in Gaza, with Israeli planes and tanks pounding the eastern and northern outskirts of Gaza City overnight Saturday to Sunday.

Israel approved a plan this month to seize control of Gaza City, describing it as Hamas’ last bastion. It is not expected to begin for a few weeks, leaving room for mediators Egypt and Qatar to try and resume ceasefire talks between the sides.

Dar, who is currently in Dhaka on a most high-profile visit by any Pakistani official to Bangladesh in recent years, will travel directly to Jeddah to attend the extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.

“The high-level meeting will bring together foreign ministers and senior officials from OIC member states to deliberate upon coordinated responses to the escalating developments in Palestine, resulting from ongoing

Israeli military aggression, its proposed plans for full military control over Gaza and the continued egregious violations of Palestinians’ rights,” the Pakistani foreign office said.

Headquartered in Jeddah, the OIC is the second-largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations, with a membership of 57 states across four continents. It serves as a collective voice of the Muslim world to ensure and safeguard their interests in economic, social, and political spheres.

Pakistan, which does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, has consistently condemned Israel’s war on Gaza that has killed at least 62,000 Palestinians since Oct. 2023, left much of the territory in ruins and internally displaced nearly its entire population.

Dar will reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering support for Palestine and reiterate its principled stance at the OIC meeting, according to the Pakistani foreign office.

“The DPM/FM will advocate for total withdrawal of Israel from all the Occupied Palestinian Territories; reject the outrageous Israeli plan for extending full military control over Gaza and further displacement of Palestinians; emphasize the urgent need of unhindered humanitarian assistance; and call for the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people — most notably, the establishment of an independent, contiguous, and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders,” it said.

“On the sidelines of the OIC-CFM, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from key OIC member states.”

Pakistan Railways announces 2030 Karachi-Lahore bullet train project
  • State media says bullet train project to reduce travel time from cities to five hours from 20
  • Lahore-Karachi bullet train project to be completed with Chinese assistance, says state media

Islamabad: Pakistan Railways has announced its plans to introduce a bullet train project between the provincial capitals of Lahore and Karachi, state-run media reported on Sunday, with the initiative to cut travel time from 20 hours to just five by 2030.

Quoting Railways Minister Hanis Abbasi, state broadcaster Radio Pakistan said the 1,215-kilometer-long high-speed rail line is part of the ML-1 project. The ML‑1, a $6.7 billion upgrade of Pakistan’s 1,687-kilometer Karachi–Peshawar rail artery first agreed upon in May 2017, is central to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

In its report, Radio Pakistan said the upgrade would be carried out under the CPEC project with Chinese support.

“The trains will run at speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, with major stops in Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal,” Radio Pakistan reported.

The report said that the China Railway Construction Corporation will be part of the project, which would include upgrades such as new double tracks, rebuilt bridges and modern signaling systems.

“Beyond faster travel, the project is projected to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation, boost regional trade, and increase Pakistan’s freight rail share from 4 percent to 20 percent by 2030,” the report said.

Radio Pakistan said the project is also expected to reduce reliance on costly road transport, saving billions in fuel imports.

Rail transport remains a critical but underfunded part of Pakistan’s public infrastructure. The Pakistan Railways network stretches over 7,700 kilometers and connects major cities, yet it has struggled for decades with outdated technology, frequent delays and safety issues due to a lack of investment and mismanagement.

In recent years, successive governments have pledged to revitalize the sector. Recent initiatives have included track rehabilitation, procurement of new locomotives and the expansion of digital ticketing systems.

  • Pakistan’s northern region is home to some of the tallest peaks and a major tourist destination

ISLAMABAD: Climbers Sirbaz Khan and Abig Baig have successfully summitted the Tirich Mir, the highest peak in the Hindu Kush mountain range located in northwestern Pakistan, state-run media reported on Sunday.

Tirich Mir, located in Pakistan’s northwestern Chitra district, is the highest peak of the Hindu Kush mountain range at 7,708 meters. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial government undertook the initiative by taking a seven-member team of mountaineers to summit the peak.

Other than Khan and Baig, the rest of the five climbers reached up to 7,300 meters but were unable to go further due to harsh weather conditions, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported. The team included KP Director of Tourism Authority Umar Khan, Dr. Naveed Iqbal, Major Muhammad Atif, Shams-ul-Qamar, and Akmal Naveed.

“According to Director of the Tourism Authority, Umar Khan, mountaineers Sirbaz Khan and Abid Baig, who hail from Gilgit-Baltistan, successfully climbed the peak,” the report said.

KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur congratulated the Pakistani climbers on successfully summiting Tirich Mir. The provincial government had earlier declared the year 2025–26 as the “Year of Tirich Mir,” the report added.

After summitting the peak, Khan said his dream of summiting Tirich Mir was made possible thanks to the support of the provincial government.

The Pakistani climber pointed out that there are several other peaks near Tirich Mir that have the potential to boost adventure tourism in the future.

Pakistan’s northern region, especially Gilgit-Baltistan, is home to some of the tallest peaks in the world and a major tourist destination. Thousands of tourists and foreign climbers visit the region each year for expeditions on various peaks, paragliding and other sports activities.

Pakistan has produced several professional climbers, both men and women, who have summited some of the world’s tallest peaks in recent years.

  • Siblings’ father is coach of Pakistan’s national taekwondo team while their mother is a double national champion

ISLAMABAD: Three Pakistani siblings made history when they became the first to bag four medals at an international taekwondo championship in Malaysia this month, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on Sunday.

The MBW International Taekwondo Championship 2025 was held from Aug. 15-17 at the Malaysian city of Nilai at the N9 Arena, drawing over 4,200 athletes from 32 countries.

Ayesha Ayaz, Pakistan’s youngest taekwondo champion, clinched both a gold and a bronze medal. Her elder brother, Mohammad Zaryab Khan, won a gold medal after a series of commanding performances while the youngest sibling, Gulalai Ayaz, was named Best Fighter of the Tournament and secured a bronze medal.

“This marks the first time in Pakistan’s history that three siblings have collectively secured four medals at an international taekwondo event,” APP reported.

“Their victory has sparked celebrations in Swat and across the country, where people see their success as a beacon of pride and motivation for the younger generation.”

Ayesha thanked god for her victory, paying tribute to her father for believing in her talents.

“I am deeply grateful to my father, who has been my greatest source of strength, and to all the supporters who always believed in me,” she said.

Ayesha, born in 2011 in the northwestern Swat valley, started practicing taekwondo at the age of 3 and made her international debut at 8. She is also the youngest national champion.

The siblings’ father is the coach of Pakistan’s national taekwondo team while their mother is a double national champion. Her father also runs a martial arts training academy in Swat.

Ayesha has been making headlines internationally for Pakistan in the combat sport. She was the youngest competitor to win a bronze medal for Pakistan in the 27 kg category at the Al-Fujairah Open Taekwondo Championship in Dubai in 2019.

In February 2020, the talented young athlete earned a gold medal in the 34 kg category at the 8th Al-Fujairah Open Taekwondo Championship in Dubai.

She has also secured the title of district champion five times and been crowned a provincial champion twice.

  • Pakistan Deputy PM Dar meets Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain during high-level visit to Dhaka
  • Pakistan, Bangladesh sign agreements to promote foreign service, trade and abolishing diplomats’ visas

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday held wide-ranging talks with Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain during which both sides discussed enhancing trade and economic cooperation as well as the resolution of the Palestine issue, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.

Dar arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday in the most high-profile visit by a Pakistani official to Dhaka in recent years. His visit comes as both countries move closer and attempt to forge stronger ties following the ouster of former premier Sheikh Hasina after a violent uprising in Bangladesh last year.

His official trip follows months of increased contact between the two South Asian nations. Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal has been in Dhaka this week discussing trade and agricultural collaboration, while Pakistan’s foreign secretary Amna Baloch held the first bilateral consultations with Bangladesh in 15 years in April.

During their talks in Dhaka, Dar and Hossain reviewed bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, trade and economic cooperation, people-to-people contacts, cultural exchanges, cooperation in education and capacity building, the Pakistani foreign office said.

“Regional and international issues, including rejuvenation of SAARC [South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] and resolution of Palestine and the Rohingya issues were also discussed,” the foreign office added.

Pakistan has repeatedly condemned Israel for its military operations in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, which have killed over 60,000 Palestinians in the densely populated strip.

The statement said that talks between both sides took place in a “constructive atmosphere,” reflecting the goodwill between the two countries.

“Both sides agreed to work for further strengthening of bilateral relations,” the foreign office said.

Following delegation-level talks between the two sides, Pakistan and Bangladesh signed six agreements. The two sides signed an agreement on Visa Abolition for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders, a memorandum of understanding on Joint Working Group on Trade and a memorandum of understanding between the Foreign Service Academies of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The two sides also signed an MoU between the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan Corporation and Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, another MoU between the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies, and the Cultural Exchange Programme.

“These agreements will institutionalize and further strengthen the bilateral cooperation in trade and economics, training of diplomats, academic exchanges, media cooperation and cultural exchanges,” the Pakistani foreign office added.

Earlier, the Pakistani deputy premier, along with Commerce Minister Jam Kamal, met Bangladesh’s Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin and other senior officials of Bangladesh’s state-owned institutions on Sunday.

The foreign ministry said in-depth discussions were held on bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two sides.

From the Bangladesh side, the governor of its central bank, the executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, the chairman of the Bangladesh Trading Corporation and the chairman of the country’s civil aviation authority were present in the meeting.

The Pakistan foreign ministry said the secretaries of commerce and aviation ministries of Bangladesh, along with the chairman of the National Board of Revenue, also attended the meeting.

Pakistan and Bangladesh have attempted to decrease hostile ties ever since Hasina’s ouster last year, which created space for the two countries to reset ties. Pakistan and Bangladesh were one country until the 1971 war caused Bangladesh to secede from Pakistan.

After arriving on Saturday, Dar met leaders of Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), a student-led movement that spearheaded the protests that unseated Hasina.

The Pakistani deputy prime minister is scheduled to meet Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus as well during his two-day stay in Dhaka.
