  • Pogacar: Last year was an exceptional year for me. I had a great time. Everything went super smoothly, I managed to be in great shape in every race
  • He will get his 2025 season underway at the UAE Tour

BENIDORM, Spain: Tadej Pogacar insisted on Tuesday he would not ease off after a record-breaking 2024, declaring he was hungry for more success with a plethora of one-day classics and two Grand Tours on the 2025 menu.

The 26-year-old Slovenian dominated the 2024 season winning two one-day monuments, the Italian Giro, the Tour de France and the world title on his way to 25 wins in total for the year.

He will get his 2025 season underway at the UAE Tour. He will race the Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, the E3 Grand Prix, Gent-Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders before the Ardennes classics.

One race off the agenda is the Paris-Roubaix, suited to heftier riders due to its harsh old cobbled mining roads.

“I wanted to get back on the cobbles and I’ll do it again in the future. I’m saving Paris-Roubaix for later. But I love racing the classics.” he said in Benidrom, Spain, on Tuesday.

“After the Giro-Tour thing this season, I’d like to do the Tour-Vuelta, or even the Giro-Vuelta. But the Tour is the Tour, and it will still be my priority next year, along with the Worlds,” he confirmed.

As well as the Tour de France, which will run from July 5-27, Pogacar will choose between the Giro and Vuelta once the routes have been revealed.

If he foregoes the Giro (May 9-June 1) in favor of the Vuelta (August 23-September 14), the Slovenian will take part in the Criterium du Dauphine (June 8-15) in preparation for the Tour de France.

“What’s certain is that he won’t be doing the three big Tours next year,” Team UAE sports director Joxean Fernandez Matxin said.

Pogacar is also due to defend his title at the World Championships, which will be in Rwanda in September, on a very demanding course in Kigali.

“I’d like to race all three Tours one day but there are 30 riders in the team you know, and I can’t race everything,” Pogacar said.

He should then end his season on Oct. 11 at the Tour of Lombardy, the last Monument of the year, where he will be aiming for a fifth consecutive success.

“Last year was an exceptional year for me. I had a great time. Everything went super smoothly, I managed to be in great shape in every race,” said Pogacar who at only 26 years old, feels “still young” and believes he can “progress,” particularly on the “small details.”

Inter equalized on the half-hour mark with Hakan Calhanoglu’s strike

TURIN, Italy: Juventus snatched a dramatic 4-3 win at home to Inter Milan on Saturday, with Vasilije Adzic netting a stunning added time winner to send the hosts top of the Serie A standings.
Juventus took the lead in the 14th minute through Lloyd Kelly.
Inter equalized on the half-hour mark with Hakan Calhanoglu’s strike but Juventus were back in front thanks to Kenan Yildiz eight minutes later.
Calhanoglu scored another in the 65th minute to draw Inter level again and 11 minutes later Marcus Thuram’s header from a corner put the away side in front but his brother Kephren headed in from a free kick eight minutes from the end to pull Juve level.
With the game heading for a draw, substitute Adzic smashed home the winner from distance to put Juventus on nine points, three ahead of Napoli, Cremonese and AS Roma who all have a game in hand. Napoli are at Fiorentina later on Saturday. Inter remain on three points.

Manchester City, United attempt to switch season into higher gear
  • City lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham and 2-1 at Brighton to fall already six points behind reigning champions Liverpool
  • Erling Haaland has three goals, and City’s only tally since a 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers

MANCHESTER: Gianluigi Donnarumma could make his debut in the Manchester City net against visiting Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester Derby.
City (1-2-0, 3 points) completed the move for Donnaruma from Paris Saint- Germain, for a fee reportedly of at least $35 million, just as the primary transfer window closed earlier this month.
He’ll be in an open competition for the No. 1 spot with James Trafford after City sold Ederson to Fenerbahce.
Trafford started City’s first three matches this season, but back-to-back defeats heading into the international window could cause manager Pep Guardiola to change course immediately.
“He’s so tall and so huge. All the keepers want to save balls and give confidence to the team and personality and he’s a big presence on the bigger stages,” Guardiola said. “He did it in the UEFA Champions League last season at Villa Park and Anfield.”
City lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham and 2-1 at Brighton to fall already six points behind reigning champions Liverpool as the early season table shakes out.
Erling Haaland has three goals, and City’s only tally since a 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening weekend.
City also is winless in the last four derbies, earning only a point in the last two league fixtures while also losing the 2024 FA Cup final 2-1 to United and playing to a draw in the 2024 Community Shield.
And it’s the first time in five years that United (1-1-1, 4 points) has entered the Manchester Derby above City in the table, though they haven’t exactly proved convincing in their own start.
“I think we are a better team (compared to last season),” manager Ruben Amorim said. “If you see any aspect, the data, we are a different team. We are ready to play the game but we have to show on Sunday.”
A stoppage-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes — and a disallowed goal for Burnley via semi-automated offside technology — helped United to a 3-2 home win two weekends ago that was its first victory of any sort this season.
That came on the heels of an embarrassing exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town on penalties in the second round of the EFL Cup.
But Amorim’s group at least is creating chances at a better early clip than last season, even while some of the finishing is left wanting.
To that end, recently acquired striker Matheus Cunha will be among those absent to injury Sunday and unable to score his first EPL goal in a United shirt.

  • The visitors got off to a flying start with Mbappe opening the scoring from a quick counter in the 12th minute
  • Despite their numerical disadvantage, Real Madrid doubled their lead just before halftime

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain: Kylian Mbappe scored and provided the assist for Arda Guler as Real Madrid weathered a second-half storm to beat Real Sociedad 2-1 on Saturday, maintaining their perfect LaLiga start despite playing most of the match with 10 men.
The visitors got off to a flying start with Mbappe opening the scoring from a quick counter in the 12th minute, but their task became significantly harder when defender Dean Huijsen was shown a straight red card after the half-hour mark for hauling down Mikel Oyarzabal as the last man.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Real Madrid doubled their lead just before halftime when Guler scored from close range following a great run by Mbappe who brilliantly put the ball on a plate for the Turkish midfielder inside a crowded box.
Real Sociedad pulled one back with Mikel Oyarzabal from the penalty spot in the 56th minute after a handball by Dani Carvajal, but the visitors held on for a hard-fought victory that keeps them top of LaLiga with 12 points from four matches, three ahead of Athletic Bilbao who have a game in hand and host Alaves later on Saturday.
The defeat leaves winless Real Sociedad in 17th place with two points, just one spot above the relegation zone.

  • Basil Saad’s death confirmed a year after Iraqi media reports describing his ‘inexplicable’ disappearance
  • Player’s father says DNA tests carried out on body recovered from Mediterranean

BEIRUT: Iraqi footballer Basil Saad’s death has been confirmed by his club, Naft Al-Basra, which said the midfielder drowned while crossing the Mediterranean in a bid to enter Greece.
News of Saad’s death comes almost a year after Iraqi media reported on the player’s “inexplicable” disappearance.
On Friday his club posted an obituary on social media mourning the player.
The club wrote: “Naft Al-Basra Sports Club and all its staff extend their deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of our former player Basil Saad, who passed away following a tragic drowning incident in Turkiye.”
The 27-year-old footballer was reported to have left Turkiye with 23 other people on a small boat heading toward Greek island of Symi in an attempt to migrate to Europe. There have been no reports on how he reached Turkiye.
According to media reports, the boat stopped close to the island and those on board were told to swim to shore.
Saad is believed to have drowned 50 meters offshore.
His father told Iraqi iNews Channel that his son disappeared on Sept. 20, 2024.
Greek authorities on Friday provided “unclear” photos of a body recovered from the Mediterranean, he added.
The father said that Saad’s family had been notified by Interpol that DNA tests carried out on the body had “a 99.9 percent match.”
“We made DNA tests to confirm if it was him, and the samples matched,” he said.
Saad began his footballing career with Naft Al-Basra, playing in the first team for several seasons before moving to Naft Meesan Club.
He also played for Al-Qaddisiyyah, Al-Bahri, Al-Kahraba, and Samarra.

Arsenal spoil Ange return, Woltemade earns Newcastle win
  • Postecoglou made a swift return to north London after being sacked by Tottenham in June but did not enjoy a dream debut in the Forest dugout against a ruthless Arsenal
  • Woltemade did his best to make Newcastle fans forget the departed Alexander Isak with an immediate impact in a 1-0 win for the home side at St. James’ Park

LONDON: A Martin Zubimendi double took Arsenal top of the Premier League as Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge of Nottingham Forest ended in a 3-0 defeat, while Nick Woltemade’s debut goal earned Newcastle’s first win of the season against Wolves on Saturday.
Postecoglou made a swift return to north London after being sacked by Tottenham in June but did not enjoy a dream debut in the Forest dugout against a ruthless Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta’s men had two weeks over the international break to mull over losing 1-0 to title rivals Liverpool due to Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick.
But the Gunners made it three wins from four games thanks to an unlikely goalscoring hero.
Zubimendi scored just 10 times in 236 games for Real Sociedad and commanded a ÂŁ60 million ($81 million) fee in the transfer window due to his defensive abilities and distribution from the base of the midfield.
However, the Spanish international smashed home a blistering volley from outside the box to break Forest’s resistence on 32 minutes.
“Unbelievable from Zubimendi,” said Arteta.
“Two very difficult goals in terms of execution. He’s come into the club and you feel a real presence, a real authority with everything he does on the pitch.”
It took less than 60 seconds into the second half for Viktor Gyokeres to double Arsenal’s lead from Eberechi Eze’s cross before Zubimendi headed in his second of the game.
A comfortable victory achieved without William Saliba and Bukayo Saka and, for much of the match, Martin Odegaard or Declan Rice underlined the depth of quality in Arsenal’s squad as they aim to go one better after three consecutive second-placed finishes.
- Instant hero Woltemade -

Woltemade did his best to make Newcastle fans forget the departed Alexander Isak with an immediate impact in a 1-0 win for the home side at St. James’ Park.
The giant German international powered home a header from Jacob Murphy’s cross for the only goal on 29 minutes.
Eddie Howe’s men badly missed a focal point up front before the international break as Isak sat out the opening weeks of the season before his British transfer record £125 million move to Liverpool on deadline day.
Woltemade himself cost a club record ÂŁ65 million but has already begun repaying that show of faith.
Bournemouth moved up to third thanks to Antoine Semenyo’s winner from the penalty spot to beat Brighton 2-1.
Kaoru Mitoma had canceled out Alex Scott’s early strike for the Cherries.
Aston Villa remain without a goal this season but did succeed in blunting the threat of their former star Jack Grealish in a 0-0 draw away to a rejuvenated Everton.
Leeds were undone by a 94th minute own goal by Gabriel Gudmundsson to lose 1-0 at Fulham.
Sunderland’s strong start back in the Premier League continued by holding Crystal Palace in a 0-0 stalemate at Selhurst Park.
Tottenham are aiming to join Arsenal on nine points when they visit West Ham later at the London Stadium.
Chelsea, who have seven points from three games, can go top in the 1900GMT kick-off at local rivals Brentford.
Isak could make his Liverpool bow as the defending champions aim to retake top spot away to Burnley on Sunday before Manchester City host Manchester United.
