萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments
  • Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before finishing past Michel Preud鈥檋omme
  • Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals

DUBAI: 萝莉视频 has taken part in six World Cup tournaments, an Arab record it shares with Morocco and Tunisia. Here are our favorite Green Falcons moments from football鈥檚 grandest stage.

5. Saudi defeat Egypt to end winless streak (Russia 2018)

萝莉视频 returned to the World Cup after an absence of 12 years at Russia 2018 and while there would be no progress from the group stage as there was in the Green Falcons鈥 debut at USA 1994, there was a first win since that tournament 24 years earlier.

Saudi suffered a painful 5-0 defeat against the hosts on the opening day of the tournament and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 loss against Uruguay. It meant that while the final Group A match against fellow Arab qualifiers Egypt was a dead rubber, pride was very much still at stake.

Mohamed Salah, after a stellar season for Liverpool, gave Egypt a 1-0 lead, but deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Salman Al-Faraj equalized from the penalty spot.

As the clock passed the 90-minute mark it looked like both teams would be heading home without a win, but Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 and end the Green Falcon鈥檚 15-match winless World Cup streak.

4. Almost a perfect send-off for Sami Al-Jaber (Germany 2006)

It was almost the ideal end for arguably 萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest ever footballer.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany may not have ended up being too fondly remembered by Saudi fans but it did provide an early moment which hinted at a repeat of the team鈥檚 1994 heroics.

The Green Falcons鈥 opening match against Tunisia at the Allianz Arena in Munich saw the North African team take the lead from Ziad Jaziri after only 23 minutes but the Saudis struck back with a fine finish by Yasser Al-Qahtani on 57 minutes.

Enter Al-Jaber. Wearing his favored No. 9 green shirt, he was introduced as a substitute after 82 minutes and within moments he was bearing down on Tunisian goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel with the goal at his mercy. Al-Jaber did not disappoint, scoring Saudi鈥檚 second before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

Unfortunately for the team managed by Marcos Paqueta, Tunisia equalized in the dying seconds and Saudi went on to lose their next two matches against Ukraine and Spain.

But at least Al-Jaber鈥檚 fourth and last World Cup had ended like his first, with a goal for his beloved 萝莉视频.

3. Al-Ghesheyan stunner gives Saudi a fleeting dream (US 1994)

萝莉视频 had already created history by progressing from the group stages at the US World Cup in 1994 and their reward was a round of 16 clash with Sweden, who would end up being one of the teams of the tournament.

In the stifling heat of Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Green Falcons, fresh off a stunning win over Belgium in their previous match, put on brave display but found themselves two goals down after an early header from Martin Dahlin and a strike from Kennet Andersson six minutes after the break.

Just as it looked like an exhausted team was only minutes from heading home, up popped substitute Fahad Al-Ghesheyan to breathe life into 萝莉视频鈥檚 World Cup campaign and allow the fans to dream again.

The 21-year-old collected the ball inside the Swedish penalty area and unleashed a right-foot strike into the roof of the net five minutes from time to suddenly give Saudi hope of a stunning comeback.

But just two minutes later, Andersson scored his second to give Sweden a 3-1 win and eliminate the Falcons from the competition. They had become the first Arab nation to reach the last 16 in their first attempt and no team from the region would progress further until 2022.

2. Al-Owairan scores one of the World Cup鈥檚 greatest goals (USA 1994)

To Diego Maradona鈥檚 iconic solo goal against England in 1986 and Roberto Baggio鈥檚 international career-launching strike against Czechoslovakia in 1990, you can add Saeed Al-Owairan鈥檚 remarkable winner against Belgium in 1994.

萝莉视频鈥檚 debut at the World Cup had ended with a 2-1 loss to reigning European champions the Netherlands at the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., but in their second Group F match, they managed an excellent 2-1 win over Morocco at the Giants Stadium in New York.

It meant that progress to the last 16 would depend on their result against Belgium, and the Green Falcons would go on to record one of their greatest ever results back at the RFK.

Only five minutes into the match, Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before the forward finished past stranded goalkeeper Michel Preud鈥檋omme.

The stunned Belgians had no answer to that goal in the next 85 minutes. 萝莉视频, in their first World Cup, were heading to the last 16 and Al-Owairan had written his name alongside the World Cup greats.

1. Saudi claim greatest win over Messi鈥檚 Argentina (Qatar 2022)

There can be few debates about 萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest World Cup moment.

Few people would have given Herve Renard鈥檚 team much hope of a victory when they took on Lionel Messi and Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Nov. 22, 2022.

And sure enough it was the Argentine maestro who gave the South Americans the lead on 10 minutes from the penalty spot. But the expected Argentinian procession did not materialize. Instead, the Falcons, through gritty defending and smart counterattacks, slowly grew into the game.

The second half would be a revelation. First Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans in the stadium and around the world wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals.

Messi and his colleagues would go on to win the World Cup, but that day they had no answer to 萝莉视频鈥檚 tigerish performance.

There would be no progress from the group stage for the Falcons, but the 2-1 scoreline gave them their most famous victory and they would end the tournament as the eventual world champions鈥 only conquerors.

Sri Lanka鈥檚 Mathews hails 鈥榙ream run鈥 in final Test against Bangladesh

GALLE: Sri Lanka are set to begin a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Galle on Tuesday that will mark the end of Angelo Mathews鈥檚 鈥渄ream run鈥 in the game鈥檚 longest format, as the cricket season resumed following South Africa鈥檚 World Test Championship triumph at Lord鈥檚.
The red-ball matches between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be followed by a white-ball series of three one-day internationals and three T20s.
Hosts Sri Lanka begin the contest as firm favorites, eager to turn a fresh page after a stuttering end to the previous WTC cycle.
Sri Lanka were firmly in the mix for a place in the WTC final until December before the wheels came off spectacularly.
Two defeats in South Africa followed by a twin collapse at Galle against Australia saw them tumble down the rankings.
鈥淲e had one hand on a spot in the final but a few brain fades at crunch moments cost us dearly,鈥 Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva told reporters on Monday.
鈥淲e鈥檝e learnt our lessons. A strong home start lays the foundation for success on the road.鈥

Sri Lanka鈥檚 squad includes six uncapped players, with at least one debut cap set to be handed out.
Spin remains Sri Lanka鈥檚 strength, with Prabath Jayasuriya the key and selectors also calling up off-spinner Akila Dananjaya.
Bangladesh enter the series without stalwarts Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is realistic about the challenge.
鈥淭amim and Shakib 鈥 those are massive boots to fill,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut this is a chance for the young guys to put their hands up.鈥
Shanto, who is playing in Galle for the first time, said the team have 鈥減repped well and we鈥檙e ready for the challenge.鈥
The Test will also be the swansong of Sri Lanka鈥檚 veteran Angelo Mathews, who is retiring after 118 Tests.
The former skipper also played his first Test on the famous pitch perched beneath the fortress in Galle in 2009.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a dream run,鈥 said 38-year-old Mathews.
鈥淭he wins in England in 2014 and whitewashing the Aussies in 2016 stand out. I鈥檝e seen so many youngsters come through the ranks,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 truly believe Sri Lanka鈥檚 future is in good hands.鈥
Sri Lanka have won 20 of the 26 Tests they have played against Bangladesh, who have only managed a solitary win along with five draws.
The second Test will begin in Colombo on June 25.

  • Top German soccer clubs including Bayer Leverkusen and Leipzig face the prospect of handing over more control to fans after a regulator intervened

BONN: Top German soccer clubs including Bayer Leverkusen and Leipzig face the prospect of handing over more control to fans after a regulator intervened.
A statement Monday from Germany鈥檚 antitrust regulator, the Federal Cartel Office, said it wants to see tighter enforcement of the rule known as 50-plus-1 which requires a soccer club鈥檚 membership to have majority voting rights over how the team is run.
The regulator said recent European court rulings suggest permanent exemptions from 50-plus-1 for last year鈥檚 champion Leverkusen and fellow top-tier club Wolfsburg seem 鈥渘o longer possible.鈥
It said efforts should be made in the future to ensure the club鈥檚 professional soccer operations come under the control of membership organizations, but didn鈥檛 name any deadline.
Leverkusen and Wolfsburg were founded as workers鈥 teams at major companies which own the clubs, with pharmaceutical giant Bayer at Leverkusen, and car manufacturer Volkswagen at Wolfsburg. Their long-term involvement led to the clubs getting exemptions from 50-plus-1.
The regulator also said the German men鈥檚 soccer league needs to ensure the clubs it oversees 鈥渙ffer their fans the opportunity to become a new full member with voting rights.鈥
That appears to affect Leipzig and its relationship with drinks giant Red Bull, though they weren鈥檛 directly named by the regulator in Tuesday鈥檚 statement.
The club was founded by Red Bull in 2009 and is part of its international network of soccer clubs. It grants voting rights to far fewer people than most German clubs. Local media reported that only 23 members had the right to vote at Leipzig as of last year.

  • The Palestinian team needed to win its last three Group B games in Asian qualifying to advance to another continental playoff round

AMMAN: An engrossing qualifying journey of 16 games and the obstacles of a war came crashing down in an instant for Oday Dabbagh and his Palestinian team.
Their legacy will long continue.
Players left the field in tears in the immediate aftermath at the King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, Jordan, last Thursday after their quest for a first appearance at a World Cup evaporated on a contentious penalty awarded deep in extra time. Fans looked on, stunned.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very hard,鈥 Dabbagh, the team鈥檚 star striker, told The Associated Press. 鈥淚t was massive for us to get to the next stage 鈥 we prepared well, we had a positive atmosphere, and we had the fans with us. We gave everything, but it was gone in a moment.鈥
Needing to win its last three Group B games to reach the playoffs for the last two of Asia鈥檚 automatic spots at the World Cup, the No. 101-ranked team in the world beat Iraq in Basra in March, Kuwait in Kuwait City on June 5. Five days later, it was leading 1-0 against Oman in Jordan in the 97th minute.
The Palestinians had never been in a better position in qualifying for a World Cup. Then Oman was awarded, and scored, a penalty to make it 1-1 in the last real act of the game.
Not long after the dejected players had picked themselves up, the Palestine Football Association (PFA) made an official complaint to soccer鈥檚 world governing body, FIFA, about the penalty. It didn鈥檛 change the fact, however, that the long road trip was over.
鈥淲e tried to put smiles on the faces of Palestinians amid their great pain,鈥 head coach Ihab Abujazar said. 鈥淭he heroic players are our pride and glory, a symbol of all that is beautiful in the Palestinian nation.鈥
Playing Away
It may have been different if the Palestinian team, admitted into FIFA in 1998, was able to play home games in front of its fans in Gaza or the West Bank in the third round of qualifying. The Israel-Hamas war meant that couldn鈥檛 happen. And so the many of the team鈥檚 home games have been taking place in the nearby Jordanian capital of Amman, home to a large community of Palestinians.
鈥淚t is easier to play in your home,鈥 Dabbagh, who helped Aberdeen win the Scottish Cup last month, said. 鈥淏ut the circumstances there are so difficult so we choose to play in Amman as it is close to Palestine, the people are the same, and we have a lot of fans there.鈥
There鈥檚 been no domestic soccer in the Palestinian territories since the war started in 2023. Hundreds of athletes are among the more than 55,000 Palestinians killed in the conflict and sports facilities have been destroyed.
鈥淓verything that goes on makes us all sad,鈥 Dabbagh said. 鈥淎s players, we try to focus on football during the games, but we use what is happening as motivation to bring happiness to the people of Palestine.鈥
All but two of the roster of 27 national squad players are contracted to foreign clubs either in the region or in Europe, a change from the start of the conflict when a number of players weren鈥檛 able to leave the West Bank or Gaza to report for international duty.
Over the past year or so, the Palestinian squad has assembled for training camps in Algeria, Qatar and 萝莉视频 to prepare for World Cup qualifying.
The top two teams in each of three Asian groups in the third round earned direct spots for next year鈥檚 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The third- and fourth-place teams in each group advanced to a playoff for two more places. A win would have secured fourth spot in the group for the Palestinians. The last-minute draw meant they finished a point behind Oman in fifth.
What鈥檚 next?
Now their focus has to shift to the 2027 Asian Cup, which will take place in 萝莉视频. The Palestinian team has already qualified for the tournament.
Dabbagh is ready to show that the team is set to remain a force in Asian soccer and continue to be ambassodors for millions of people.
鈥淲e will keep using football as a message to show the world that there are other things in Palestine鈥 he said. 鈥淲e will keep going. The dream is not over, it is just delayed.鈥
