萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments
  • Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before finishing past Michel Preud鈥檋omme
  • Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals

DUBAI: 萝莉视频 has taken part in six World Cup tournaments, an Arab record it shares with Morocco and Tunisia. Here are our favorite Green Falcons moments from football鈥檚 grandest stage.

5. Saudi defeat Egypt to end winless streak (Russia 2018)

萝莉视频 returned to the World Cup after an absence of 12 years at Russia 2018 and while there would be no progress from the group stage as there was in the Green Falcons鈥 debut at USA 1994, there was a first win since that tournament 24 years earlier.

Saudi suffered a painful 5-0 defeat against the hosts on the opening day of the tournament and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 loss against Uruguay. It meant that while the final Group A match against fellow Arab qualifiers Egypt was a dead rubber, pride was very much still at stake.

Mohamed Salah, after a stellar season for Liverpool, gave Egypt a 1-0 lead, but deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Salman Al-Faraj equalized from the penalty spot.

As the clock passed the 90-minute mark it looked like both teams would be heading home without a win, but Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 and end the Green Falcon鈥檚 15-match winless World Cup streak.

4. Almost a perfect send-off for Sami Al-Jaber (Germany 2006)

It was almost the ideal end for arguably 萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest ever footballer.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany may not have ended up being too fondly remembered by Saudi fans but it did provide an early moment which hinted at a repeat of the team鈥檚 1994 heroics.

The Green Falcons鈥 opening match against Tunisia at the Allianz Arena in Munich saw the North African team take the lead from Ziad Jaziri after only 23 minutes but the Saudis struck back with a fine finish by Yasser Al-Qahtani on 57 minutes.

Enter Al-Jaber. Wearing his favored No. 9 green shirt, he was introduced as a substitute after 82 minutes and within moments he was bearing down on Tunisian goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel with the goal at his mercy. Al-Jaber did not disappoint, scoring Saudi鈥檚 second before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

Unfortunately for the team managed by Marcos Paqueta, Tunisia equalized in the dying seconds and Saudi went on to lose their next two matches against Ukraine and Spain.

But at least Al-Jaber鈥檚 fourth and last World Cup had ended like his first, with a goal for his beloved 萝莉视频.

3. Al-Ghesheyan stunner gives Saudi a fleeting dream (US 1994)

萝莉视频 had already created history by progressing from the group stages at the US World Cup in 1994 and their reward was a round of 16 clash with Sweden, who would end up being one of the teams of the tournament.

In the stifling heat of Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Green Falcons, fresh off a stunning win over Belgium in their previous match, put on brave display but found themselves two goals down after an early header from Martin Dahlin and a strike from Kennet Andersson six minutes after the break.

Just as it looked like an exhausted team was only minutes from heading home, up popped substitute Fahad Al-Ghesheyan to breathe life into 萝莉视频鈥檚 World Cup campaign and allow the fans to dream again.

The 21-year-old collected the ball inside the Swedish penalty area and unleashed a right-foot strike into the roof of the net five minutes from time to suddenly give Saudi hope of a stunning comeback.

But just two minutes later, Andersson scored his second to give Sweden a 3-1 win and eliminate the Falcons from the competition. They had become the first Arab nation to reach the last 16 in their first attempt and no team from the region would progress further until 2022.

2. Al-Owairan scores one of the World Cup鈥檚 greatest goals (USA 1994)

To Diego Maradona鈥檚 iconic solo goal against England in 1986 and Roberto Baggio鈥檚 international career-launching strike against Czechoslovakia in 1990, you can add Saeed Al-Owairan鈥檚 remarkable winner against Belgium in 1994.

萝莉视频鈥檚 debut at the World Cup had ended with a 2-1 loss to reigning European champions the Netherlands at the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., but in their second Group F match, they managed an excellent 2-1 win over Morocco at the Giants Stadium in New York.

It meant that progress to the last 16 would depend on their result against Belgium, and the Green Falcons would go on to record one of their greatest ever results back at the RFK.

Only five minutes into the match, Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before the forward finished past stranded goalkeeper Michel Preud鈥檋omme.

The stunned Belgians had no answer to that goal in the next 85 minutes. 萝莉视频, in their first World Cup, were heading to the last 16 and Al-Owairan had written his name alongside the World Cup greats.

1. Saudi claim greatest win over Messi鈥檚 Argentina (Qatar 2022)

There can be few debates about 萝莉视频鈥檚 greatest World Cup moment.

Few people would have given Herve Renard鈥檚 team much hope of a victory when they took on Lionel Messi and Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Nov. 22, 2022.

And sure enough it was the Argentine maestro who gave the South Americans the lead on 10 minutes from the penalty spot. But the expected Argentinian procession did not materialize. Instead, the Falcons, through gritty defending and smart counterattacks, slowly grew into the game.

The second half would be a revelation. First Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans in the stadium and around the world wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals.

Messi and his colleagues would go on to win the World Cup, but that day they had no answer to 萝莉视频鈥檚 tigerish performance.

There would be no progress from the group stage for the Falcons, but the 2-1 scoreline gave them their most famous victory and they would end the tournament as the eventual world champions鈥 only conquerors.

The title game is Sunday in Riga. Turkiye beat Greece 94-68 on Friday in the second semifinal, preceded by Germany鈥檚 98-86 win over Finland.

Greece and Finland play Sunday for bronze.

Regardless of outcome, it鈥檒l be just the second EuroBasket medal for Turkiye; they won silver when the country played host to the tournament in 2001. Germany will medal for the fourth time after winning gold in 1993, silver in 2005 and bronze in the most recent EuroBasket before now in 2022.

Germany and Turkiye played a friendly before this EuroBasket started at the DBB Supercup. Germany won that game 73-71 on Aug. 15.

And at EuroBasket, neither team has lost. Both will bring 8-0 records into Sunday鈥檚 matchup. The winner will be just the second undefeated EuroBasket champion in the last nine stagings of the tournament, joining Slovenia in 2017.

Turkiye 94 Greece 68

Ercan Osmani scored 28 points, Cedi Osman added 17 and Turkiye rolled into the title game.

Turkiye blew the game open with a 12-0 run that took only 2:19 of the second quarter, going up 45-24 when that spurt ended. It was 49-31 at the half, with the primary difference being turnovers. Greece had 12 in the first 20 minutes that turned into 17 Turkiye points; Turkiye had only two giveaways in the first half, which became two Greece points.

Kostas Sloukas led Greece with 15 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo was held to 12 points in 30 minutes; he also grabbed 12 rebounds for Greece.

Germany 98 Finland 86

Dennis Schr枚der scored 26 points and added 12 assists to help Germany beat Finland and earn their spot in the final.

Schr枚der made four 3-pointers and went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Franz Wagner added 22 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to help Germany build their biggest lead at 49-30 in the second quarter.

Olivier Nkamhoua led Finland with 22 points. Lauri Markkanen had 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting for Finland, which was within six late in the third quarter but watched Germany pull away.

  • Friday鈥檚 other matches saw Asian champions Al-Ahli draw 0-0 with Al-Ettifaq, while Al-Shabab beat 10-man Al-Hazem 1-0

RIYADH: Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad maintained their perfect start to the 2025-26 season with a 4-2 win over Al-Fateh on Friday.

The win puts Al-Ittihad at the top of the early season table with the maximum six points from two matches, with several other teams 鈥 including Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr 鈥 on three points and yet to play during week two.

The match, held at King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

Al-Ittihad took the lead after 22 minutes through Algerian star Houssem Aouar but were pegged back 11 minutes later by Argentine Matias Vargas. Strikes by Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn in the 35th and 39th minutes, and the dismissal of Al-Fateh鈥檚 Moroccan striker Mourad Batna in stoppage time, ensured the reigning champions went into half-time with a comfortable two-goal cushion.

However, what was expected to be a straightforward second half was disrupted when Al-Ittihad鈥檚 goalkeeper, Serbian Predrag Rajkovic, was sent off just before the hour mark. The home fans鈥 nerves were not helped when Algerian forward Sofiane Bendebka reduced Al-Fateh鈥檚 deficit with a penalty on 69 minutes.

It remained a tense match until Saudi defender Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti settled matters in the first minute of stoppage time, scoring Al-Ittihad鈥檚 fourth.

Earlier on Friday, Asian champions Al-Ahli played out a 0-0 draw at Al-Ettifaq, while Al-Shabab beat 10-man Al-Hazem 1-0 in Riyadh thanks to Belgian international Yannick Carrasco鈥檚 64th-minute strike.

  • Ancelotti left Neymar out of his 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia, citing a minor leg muscle injury. However, Neymar later said it was for technical reasons

EL ALTO, Bolivia: Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said Neymar鈥檚 physical condition will be crucial for his inclusion in the national team for next year鈥檚 World Cup, following the 33-year-old forward鈥檚 omission from recent qualifiers.
Ancelotti left Neymar out of his 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia, citing a minor leg muscle injury. However, Neymar later said his exclusion was for technical reasons.
The former Barcelona and Paris St. Germain player has not donned the famous yellow jersey since October 2023, when he suffered serious knee ligament injuries that have plagued his comeback attempts.
鈥淲e are not going to observe how Neymar plays, obviously. Everyone knows his talent,鈥 Ancelotti told ESPN Brasil on Friday.
鈥淚n modern football, to take advantage of his talent, the player has to be in good physical condition. If he is in his best physical condition, he will have no problems being in the national team.
鈥淓veryone wants Neymar in the national team in good physical condition. I spoke with him and I said, 鈥榊ou have time to prepare in the best way to be there and help the team try to do their best in the World Cup鈥.鈥
Neymar has shown flashes of brilliance since returning to his boyhood club, Santos, from Saudi side Al-Hilal.
However, his struggles were laid bare last month when he left the pitch in tears following Santos鈥 crushing 6-0 defeat by Vasco da Gama.
Ancelotti said he sees Neymar playing centrally, either as an attacking midfielder or striker.
鈥淚 spoke with him ... Everything is clear, the idea remains the same,鈥 Ancelotti said.
鈥淗e can鈥檛 play on the outside because modern football needs forward who have physical quality, it鈥檚 very important. He can play as an attacking midfielder without problems.鈥
Brazil, who have already qualified for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, will next be in action when they face South Korea in a friendly match in Seoul on October 10.

Salt ton sees records tumble as England thrash South Africa to level T20 series
  • Opening batsman Salt鈥檚 astounding 141 not out was the cornerstone of England鈥檚 mammoth 304-2
  • It was the first time in a T20 international between two Test-playing nations a side had reached 300

MANCHESTER: Phil Salt hit the highest score and quickest century by an England batsman in a T20 international as the hosts hammered South Africa by 146 runs to level their three-match series at 1-1 during a record-breaking evening at Old Trafford on Friday.

Opening batsman Salt鈥檚 astounding 141 not out was the cornerstone of England鈥檚 mammoth 304-2.

It was the first time in a T20 international between two Test-playing nations a side had reached 300, with India having come closest previously, scoring 297-6 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in 2024.

South Africa, faced with a colossal chase, unsurprisingly lost early wickets and were dismissed for 158 in under 17 overs, with skipper Aiden Markram鈥檚 41 their top score.

An elated Salt told Sky Sports: 鈥淭hat was really good fun. A personal milestone but the fact we got 300 and won by such a big margin, I can鈥檛 have asked for much more.鈥

Only Zimbabwe with 344 against the Gambia in October last year and Nepal, who amassed 314 when playing Mongolia two years ago, have made more at this level.

Jofra Archer took 3-25 in three overs after the England express quick did not feature in the Proteas鈥 series-opening win in a rain-shortened match in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Salt鈥檚 119, the existing England record at this level, had been at the heart of his country鈥檚 previous highest T20 total of 267-3 against the West Indies in Trinidad in December 2023.

The 29-year-old, out for a golden duck in Cardiff, turned the tables in style with a remarkable 60-ball innings featuring 15 fours and eight sixes on his Lancashire home ground.

His fourth T20 hundred 鈥 no other England batsman has more than one 鈥 came off 39 deliveries.

It was also the quickest century in any format by an England batsman, surpassing Liam Livingstone鈥檚 42-ball effort in a T20 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2021.

鈥楶丑别苍辞尘别苍补濒鈥

Salt shared a blistering opening partnership of 126 in a mere 7.5 overs with county colleague Jos Buttler (83) after England were sent into bat before England captain Harry Brook chipped in with an unbeaten 41.

鈥淧retty lost for words,鈥 said Brook. 鈥淭he way them two (Salt and Buttler) started off was just phenomenal.

鈥淢e and Jos were stood out there and said we never thought anyone get 300.鈥

Markram admitted things had gone against South Africa even before the first ball, saying: 鈥淧robably started getting it wrong from the toss, so that one鈥檚 on me.

鈥淭wo masterclasses up front from them and when you鈥檙e put under that amount of pressure it鈥檚 tough to come back.鈥

The aggressive Salt struck fours off the first three balls of the match as he sliced Marco Jansen over point, before whipped the fast bowler through fine leg and driving him down the ground.

Salt then ended the over by lofting Jansen straight back over the left-armer鈥檚 head for six.

Former England skipper Buttler was on course for a stunningly quick century when his 83, off a mere 30 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes, ended when he holed out off Bjorn Fortuin.

Recalled spinner Fortuin, who also dismissed Jacob Bethell, was the lone successful South Africa bowler with 2-52 in four overs.

Salt鈥檚 two off a free hit against fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took him to a 39-ball century including 13 fours and five sixes.

The fastest century in a T20 featuring two Test-playing nations is David Miller鈥檚 35-ball innings for South Africa against Bangladesh at Potchefstroom in 2017.

Rabada, one of the outstanding bowlers of his generation, conceded 70 runs in four wicketless overs on Friday.

This series concludes at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

  • Matsuyama is making his debut in the flagship event on the European tour
  • The Japanese former Masters champion has immediately taken to the Wentworth Club, having made 11 birdies this week along with eagles at two of the four par-5s in the second round

VIRGINIA WATER, England: Hideki Matsuyama made two eagles in shooting 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead over a trio of European Ryder Cup players after the second round of the BMW PGA Championship on Friday.

Viktor Hovland (66), Ludvig 脜berg (69) and Justin Rose (66) were leading the pursuit of Matsuyama in their last event before the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black from Sept. 26-28.

There are 11 members of the Europe team playing this week and only one failed to make the cut 鈥 rookie Rasmus Hojgaard (5 over after a 75).

Matsuyama is making his debut in the flagship event on the European tour and the Japanese former Masters champion has immediately taken to the Wentworth Club, having made 11 birdies this week along with eagles at two of the four par-5s in the second round to be 12 under for the tournament.

At the fourth he rolled in a 15-footer, and at the 17th he chipped in from the edge of the green to jump into the lead late in the day.

鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 expecting I would play this good,鈥 the 16th-ranked Matsuyama said.

Hovland, ranked No. 15, said he couldn鈥檛 remember chipping and putting as well as he did on Friday, when he made three straight birdies from No. 4, birdied No. 16 and holed a 40-foot putt for eagle at the last.

鈥淚鈥檓 super happy to be where I鈥檓 at and scoring-wise, it鈥檚 incredible to be honest with you,鈥 Hovland said.

He was tied for seventh at the BMW Championship and 12th at the Tour Championship in the recent FedEx Cup finale on the PGA Tour.

Hovland will likely be a partner for 脜berg at Bethpage and the Swede also looks to be playing well, following up an opening 64 with a 69.

No. 12-ranked Rose made eight birdies to join his Ryder Cup teammates in a tie for second place.

Of the other Ryder Cup players, Rory McIlroy double-bogeyed the last to shoot level-par 72 and was 3 under 鈥 nine strokes off the lead 鈥 while Jon Rahm birdied the last two holes to shoot 69 for 4 under.
