5 talking points from 萝莉视频鈥檚 Gulf Cup exit

5 talking points from 萝莉视频鈥檚 Gulf Cup exit
  • Herve Renard鈥檚 team departed the regional tournament in Kuwait after a 2-1 loss to Oman in the semifinal

LONDON: 萝莉视频鈥檚 quest to win the Gulf Cup for the first time since 2004 ended at the semifinal stage on Tuesday as they lost 2-1 to Oman. Here are five things we learned from the eight-team tournament.

Disappointing exit dampens New Year cheer

Booking a place in the final would have been a perfect way to end the year but it was not to be. Herve Renard returned in October to take over from Roberto Mancini after the Italian鈥檚 troubled 18 months in charge.

There is still a slight air of gloom around the Green Falcons. World Cup qualification is going badly and the Gulf Cup was a chance for the Frenchman to get to grips with the task in 2025.

With the Saudi Pro League taking a break, he took his best team to Kuwait. Apart from a second-half spell against Iraq that brought a 3-1 win, there was not much to write home about.

The opening game loss to Bahrain was deserved; it took an injury-time goal to beat Yemen; and then came the loss to an Oman team that played two-thirds of the game with 10 men.

That defeat was hugely disappointing. There was a lack of creativity going forward and issues at the back to ensure that 2024, an underwhelming year for the national team, ended without a bang. It could have been worse but it could have been a lot better.

Renard still to rediscover his mojo

They say in football that you should never go back. While Renard鈥檚 return was largely hailed, there were some who pointed out that after the famous World Cup win against Argentina in Qatar, the team鈥檚 results until he left in March 2023 had not been great.

What is known as the 鈥渘ew coach bounce鈥 that often results from a change at the helm has not materialized 鈥 and perhaps it does not apply anyway when a manager returns after just 18 months away.

There did not seem to be much in-game management from Renard or ability to make a change that would make a difference. In his first spell Renard was clearly able to get the best out of his players but that has yet to be seen this time around.

He has not been back in the hot seat for very long, but there needs to be improvements, and quickly.

Al-Hamdan and Al-Bulaihi among the positives and negatives

One thing that can be said is that at least 萝莉视频 rediscovered where the net was. With just three goals in six World Cup qualifiers from September to November and none from the strikers, concerns were growing. In four games, the team managed nine goals. What will be more encouraging for Renard is that forwards got on the score sheet.

Abdullah Al-Hamdan has not been getting much playing time for Al-Hilal but impressed and netted three times, showing some fine striking instincts along the way, and obviously had a point to prove in coming off the bench against Iraq to score twice.

At the back however, Renard will be concerned about another Al-Hilal player. Ali Al-Bulaihi has been a mainstay for 萝莉视频 for years but was out of sorts and made mistakes, especially against Oman, that proved to be costly.

It could be asked if he should have been benched for the semifinal. The center-back has shone for his club against some of the biggest attacking names in world football so Renard will be hoping that his form is just a blip.

Injuries played a part

Injuries are part and parcel of the beautiful game but 萝莉视频 had more than their fair share in Kuwait, meaning that bad luck hampered attempts to take the trophy back to Riyadh.

Renard had to deal with injuries to, among others, Saleh Al-Shehri, Firas Al-Buraikan, Abdulelah Al-Amri, Yasser Al-Shahrani, Abdullah Al-Khaibari and Abdulelah Al-Malki.

Such absences can hit hard and also meant that, at times, there were players operating out of position. And then star player Salem Al-Dawsari was recovering from an injury in the build up to the tournament. Yet, these should not be used as excuses too much, as there should be enough talent in the country to overcome Bahrain and Oman.

The ultimate result will be seen later in the year

While a first trophy for over two decades would have been welcome, the real focus is on the resumption of World Cup qualification in March. These were four competitive games for Renard to get his teeth into, as well as the training sessions and preparation that the tournament gave.

World Cup qualification rivals China and Australia would have loved to have had the same opportunities to stay sharp. Indonesia have been playing in Southeast Asia鈥檚 regional tournament but most of their strongest players were unable to appear.

It means that, apart from Bahrain, 萝莉视频 have had a great opportunity to get some real games under their belt.

The results were mixed and the performances were mostly disappointing. But the prize that everyone wants is a place at the 2026 World Cup and if the Gulf Cup helps the team get to North America then it will have been a worthwhile 10 days in Kuwait.

Thunder rally to beat Pacers, level NBA Finals at 2-2
  • NBA Most Valuable Player Gilgeous-Alexander finds a way to fight through for Oklahoma City Thunder
  • The Thunder are seeking their first title since the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008

LOS ANGELES, United States: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 15 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied for a gritty 111-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers that leveled the NBA Finals at two games apiece on Friday.

Frustrated for much of the game by Indiana鈥檚 relentless defense, NBA Most Valuable Player Gilgeous-Alexander found a way to fight through.

He followed a three-pointer with a pull-up jumper to give the Thunder their first lead since the first half with 2:23 remaining.

They wouldn鈥檛 trail again. Gilgeous-Alexander, who didn鈥檛 get to the free-throw line in the first half, added six free-throws in the final 44 seconds.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a dog fight,鈥 Gilgeous-Alexander said after another intense, physical battle between the two teams. 鈥淓very time you step on the floor, on both ends of the floor they make you work.鈥

Jalen Williams scored 27 points, Chet Holmgren added 14 points and 15 rebounds and Alex Caruso chipped in with 20 points off the bench for the Thunder.

Pascal Siakam scored 20 points to lead Indiana, adding eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Tyrese Haliburton scored 18 points, Obi Toppin added 17 off the bench and the Pacers led by 10 late in the third quarter.

But Oklahoma City 鈥 who dropped back-to-back games just twice this season and haven鈥檛 lost consecutive games in the playoffs 鈥 clamped down defensively in the fourth, determined not to fall in a 3-1 hole.

鈥淲e knew it when we woke up this morning 鈥 3-1 is a lot different than 2-2 going back home,鈥 Gilgeous-Alexander said. 鈥淲e played with desperation to the end the game and that鈥檚 why we won.鈥

Gilgeous-Alexander said the Thunder must 鈥渕aintain the same desperation鈥 when they host game five on Monday.

The Thunder are seeking their first title since the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008, having won it all in 1979 as the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Pacers, chasing their first NBA title, struck first in another fast-paced opening quarter in front of their energized fans, making four of their first five shots and building a nine-point lead midway through the opening period.

Oklahoma hit back, putting together a 9-0 run to tie it, but the Pacers 鈥 with a strong defensive effort on Gilgeous-Alexander and four steals from Pascal Siakam 鈥 emerged from the first period with a 35-34 lead.

The back and forth battle continued in the second, when Oklahoma City led by as many as six but could never pull away and Haliburton converted a three-point play 鈥 driving through traffic for a layup and making the free throw, his first of the series 鈥 to put Indiana up 60-57 at halftime.

By then, tensions had already ratcheted up. Toppin was assessed a flagrant foul for a check that sent Alex Caruso sprawling under the basket.

Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein confronted Toppin and both received technical fouls.

OKlahoma City鈥檚 Luguentz Dort was later assessed a flagrant foul for swiping an arm over Toppin鈥檚 head.

Toppin gave Indiana the first double-digit lead of the game with a dunk that put them up 86-76 late in the third.

But the Thunder dug deep, tying it up four times in the fourth quarter before Gilgeous-Alexander came through.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e up seven at home you鈥檝e got to dig in and find a way and we were not able to do it tonight,鈥 Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 鈥淏ut give them credit. They kept attacking, kept attacking, and their defense was great down the stretch.鈥

Oklahoma City closed the game on a 12-1 scoring run, and Gilgeous-Alexander was the driving force.

鈥淗e鈥檚 unreal,鈥 Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said, although Caruso said nothing Gilgeous-Alexander does surprises him anymore.

鈥淚鈥檝e seen him do it night after night,鈥 Caruso said. 鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 show a lot of emotion on the court, but he鈥檚 one of the most competitive guys in this league.鈥

A five-time Ballon d鈥橭r winner and one of the most iconic athletes of all time, Ronaldo brings what the foundation described as 鈥渁 powerful presence and cultural resonance that transcends traditional sports,鈥 helping connect millions of fans to a new generation of e-sports athletes.

Ronaldo said: 鈥淪port is always evolving and e-sports is one more frontier. 鈥楪reatest 24-hour race on the planet鈥: Oman鈥檚 Al-Harthy鈥檚 journey at Le Mans

鈥楪reatest 24-hour race on the planet鈥: Oman鈥檚 Al-Harthy鈥檚 journey at Le Mans
  • The 43-year-old will take part in his third 24-hour race at Circuit de la Sarthe on June 14-15

LE MANS: As the racing world turns its eyes to the Circuit de la Sarthe for the weekend of June 14-15, Oman鈥檚 Ahmad Al-Harthy returns to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans for a third time 鈥 this year behind the wheel of the BMW M4 GT3 with Team WRT.

With a Le Mans podium already under his belt and growing support from BMW Oman, BMW Middle East and national partners, Al-Harthy continues to fly the sultanate鈥檚 flag high on the global motorsport stage. Here are some of his thoughts.

On representing Oman at the iconic race 鈥

Coming back here for the third time is very emotional. To be able to race and represent Oman, the GCC and everyone from the Arab world is a very proud moment for me. Le Mans is something I鈥檝e been following since childhood. To me, it鈥檚 the greatest 24-hour race on the planet. More importantly, it鈥檚 a place where I truly enjoy racing and driving around, and I鈥檓 looking forward to this third experience.

On his technical and mental progress since his first Le Mans podium in 2023 鈥

It couldn鈥檛 have started any better for me. Finishing on the podium in my first-ever 24-hour race was unbelievable, and I still get goosebumps when I think about it. The race was filled with so much emotion. Coming into 2024, my first race with BMW here was going well, but unfortunately, the weather affected us. We feel we have unfinished business, which makes us even more determined and hungry.

As a driver, every time you compete in these events, you mature and gain a deeper understanding. I鈥檝e had quite a few 24-hour race experiences, but Le Mans is always different. When you ask if I鈥檓 ready, physically, yes; mentally, it鈥檚 the challenging part. Le Mans is a demanding circuit because the speeds are very high for extended periods. We are also racing alongside Hypercars and sharing the circuit with that level of speed always pushes your concentration to the limit. I believe that every year we come back, we are slightly stronger. We must take all the positives and learn from every single lap, every single turn.

On the buzz of driving his BMW M4 LMGT3 鈥

The first thing is realizing how blessed I am to share the track with some truly iconic names in motorsport. I often reflect on my early days in motorsport, and it fills me with emotions. I also get excited by the speed because it presents a massive challenge. You hear sounds and see things that you don鈥檛 experience at any other racetrack in the world. I have certain spiritual rituals that I perform for all race weekends, and it鈥檚 the same in that sense.

This is my third 24-hour race, but I have competed at the 鈥淩oad to Le Mans鈥 in 2017 and 2019, and I was fortunate enough to stand on the podium three out of four attempts. I feel that this race has been very kind to me, and I hope to continue that streak in 2025.

On the chemistry with teammates Valentino Rossi and Kelvin Van Der Linde 鈥

You mentioned a very important point: Teamwork. For us to win and achieve great results at any endurance weekend, it鈥檚 all about teamwork. It鈥檚 not just about the three drivers; it involves everything from the pit crew to the engineering and support teams. Everyone must be on the same page. The harmony we share at Team WRT is something unique compared to many other teams on the grid.

We spend a lot of time together; we are like a family away from home. It鈥檚 not just about seeing each other in the race car; it鈥檚 what happens behind the scenes. This closeness allows us to operate at a much higher level. Endurance racing is a long journey, and while it may feel like a sprint, you don鈥檛 always need the fastest drivers to achieve the best results. You need drivers who can work together. We complement each other and focus on making the car the fastest, rather than just one driver.

On the backing from BMW Oman throughout your journey 鈥

When we first announced our move to BMW, it was an exciting partnership. BMW鈥檚 support on and off the racetrack means a lot to me. I鈥檓 proud to be an ambassador for the brand, and I鈥檝e been a fan since I was young. Having a manufacturer support you from your home country in the Middle East is something I take great pride in.

A message to young Arab and Omani athletes 鈥

The main message is that in motorsports, there are no shortcuts. We would love to see more Arab drivers coming through the ranks. We have some of the best circuits in the world, and it鈥檚 time to develop these drivers correctly without taking shortcuts. To reach Le Mans, you must come through the ranks, and I hope my presence here creates a path for that.

I want to motivate the younger generation to believe that they can be here and achieve their dreams. It takes time, and we need to understand that these things cannot be accomplished overnight. It鈥檚 a tricky formula, but it鈥檚 worth it.
