Inter’s Denzel Dumfries delighted with Riyadh double but calls for ‘focus’
  • Inter’s 2-0 win over Atalanta in the EA Sports FC Super Cup semifinal means on Monday they can now win their third Super Cup in a row in Riyadh
  • Dumfries: ‘This is the first time I’ve scored two goals in my career; I’m very happy about it’

RIYADH: Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries revealed his delight at netting the first double of his career as Inter Milan beat Atalanta 2-0 in Riyadh to earn a place in the EA Sports FC Italian Super Cup final.

The right wing-back’s first goal at Al-Awwal Park came just after half-time when he chested the ball in the air with his back to goal before acrobatically swiveling and volleying into the goal. The second arrived on the hour mark from the edge of the box when he expertly sidefooted into the net off the underside of the bar from Federico Dimarco’s through pass.

Dumfries said: “Yes, this is the first time I’ve scored two goals in my career. I’m very happy about it, but it’s not my best night. We will now focus, and we will do our best during the next game in the final. We will see tomorrow who we face in the final. It’s not our game. We lost against Milan, we drew against Juventus, but they are both important teams.”

Inter can now win their third Super Cup in a row in Riyadh. Having beaten city rivals AC Milan 3-0 in 2022 and Napoli 1-0 last year in Riyadh, Inter face either Juventus or AC Milan in Monday’s final at Al-Awwal Park. The other finalists will be decided at the same venue on Friday. Another Italian Super Cup victory would equal a record four in succession for Inter, having beaten Juventus in Italy in 2021.

Simone Inzaghi, the Inter Milan manager, praised the performance of his team on a night when they could have scored more than two.

“We got a great approach in the game,” he said. “Excellent motivation, right mindset, and I praised the whole team. We have taken just one step, and we will wait (for) the next game on Monday. Winning the Super Cup is getting hard as we play two games within three to four days. I did many finals thanks to those guys. Tomorrow, whoever deserves it more will play against us.”

Gian Piero Gasperini, the Atalanta manager, said: “Inter is strong, the strongest at the moment. We were close, and at the league, we will be even closer. I’m satisfied because it has been a chance to try different players. We created many chances in the second half.”

L’Etape Dubai by Tour de France unveils new 2026 routes and expanded program
  • Riders can take part in Epic Race (112km), Classic Race (61km), Family Ride (20km) and Kids’ Race (300m-1.8km)
  • A series of social rides and promotional events across the UAE will bring the cycling community together before race weekend

DUBAI: L’Etape Dubai by Tour de France, presented by Skoda and supported by the Dubai Sports Council, has announced new 2026 race routes and more activities, both in the buildup and during the race weekend.

Registration is now open for the event on Jan. 24 and 25 which will give amateur cyclists and enthusiasts the chance to experience the spirit of the world’s most famous cycling race in the UAE.

Eissa Sharif, the director of the Dubai Sports Council’s events department, said the success of the first edition was “a testament to the capability of our national talents in organizing world-class events.”

“This event aligns with the vision of our wise leadership to make Dubai a global hub for sports,” he added.

“We will also leverage it in youth programs and community initiatives to promote a culture of sports and physical activity across society, we extend our gratitude to the Tour de France, our partners, government entities and the public for their trust and support.”

The 2026 edition will feature new routes starting from the Dubai Design District and finishing at Expo Village Park, taking riders past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

From the longer 112-km Epic Race to the more accessible 61-km Classic Race, each course is designed to offer challenges and enjoyment.

The finish line, along with the Saturday non-competitive program, will be hosted at Expo Village Park and include the Family Ride (20 km) and Kids’ Race (300 meters to 1.8 km).

Participants will be able to test themselves in popular sprint sections, compete for famous Tour de France jerseys, and even meet and ride alongside legends of the race.

A key feature of the 2026 edition will be an enhanced Race Village, which will serve as the central hub for riders, families, and fans throughout the weekend.

As an expansion of last year’s program, cyclists across the UAE will have the chance to participate in a series of social rides in the months leading up to the race weekend.

The inaugural edition of L’Etape Dubai had over 1,000 participants, including 243 international riders and 266 Emiratis, making it the largest cycling event of its kind in the UAE.

This year about 2,000 riders across all categories are expected to participate.

Fairouz Al-Qazi, race director, said this edition will build on last year’s momentum with the new routes and expanded race village.

“With the continued support of Skoda Middle East, Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Police and our partners, we look forward to welcoming even more riders to share in the unique spirit of the Tour de France here in Dubai.”

Antoine Quiers, project manager of L’Etape Series – Amaury Sport Organisation, said the race has “already established itself as the leading amateur cycling event in the region in just one year.

“In 2026, we are looking forward to building on this success with an even bigger second edition, supported by Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Police, Skoda Middle East, and all our partners who make this event possible.

“With their continued support, we are confident that L’Etape Dubai will once again be a major success.”

The team will play 50-over matches for the first time, with the games on Sept. 26, 28, 30 and Oct. 2 in Bulawayo. All the matches start at 9:15 a.m. local time.

The UAE was awarded ODI status by the International Cricket Council in May. This came after a series of impressive T20I games which helped them break into the top 15 and earn the right to play the 50-over format.

Oza, who is captain of the team, said the players were looking forward to making history this week. “We have worked very hard to reach here and earn the ICC ODI Status,” she said in a release recently.

“Since coming here, we have acclimatized well and got a good start as we won the practice game against the high-performance team.

“Our preparation has been excellent in the leadup to this series as we had an extensive camp in Dubai which helped us both select a solid 17-player squad and work on our strategies for the series.

“We have also worked hard on the mental and physical fitness aspects for the demands of the 50-over format. We can’t wait for the series to begin with the first ball to be bowled tomorrow.”

Meanwhile the Emirates Cricket Board’s Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad called the tour “a truly historic moment” for UAE cricket.

“We have reached here after years of hard work, dedication, and investment in women’s cricket,” he said. “The players have done remarkably well in T20Is and have well and truly earned their ICC ODI Status.”

  • Pakistan will face India in the Asia Cup final for the first time after their bowlers made amends for poor batting to upstage Bangladesh in an 11-run victory on Thursday

DUBAI: Pakistan will face India in the Asia Cup final for the first time after their bowlers made amends for poor batting to upstage Bangladesh in an 11-run victory on Thursday.
Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed grabbed 3-28 as Pakistan batters were sloppy on a sticky Dubai stadium pitch in their last Super Four match, managing a modest 135-8 in 20 overs.
Pakistan staged a fight back through pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi (3-17) and Haris Rauf (3-33) to keep Bangladesh down to 124-9 in 20 overs and book a place in Sunday’s showpiece against India.
Shamim Hossain top-scored for Bangladesh with a 25-ball 30 and Saif Hassan scored 18.
Pakistan’s second win in the Super Four stage set them up for a third encounter against archrivals India.
They have lost both previous meetings with their neighbors so far in the tournament, with the two matches marred by controversy.
India players refused to shake hands with Pakistan after the first game and the two sides also did not shake hands after the second.
Pakistan skipper Salman Agha said he looks forward to meeting India again.
“We are very excited,” said Agha. “We know what we need to do, and we are a good enough team to beat anyone, and we will come on Sunday and try to beat them.”
Earlier, Taskin was well supported by spinners Rishad Hossain (2-18) and Mahedi Hasan (2-28) to keep Pakistan in check after they were sent in to bat.
Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals as Taskin removed opener Sahibzada Farhan off the fourth ball of the match for four while Hasan had Saim Ayub for his fourth duck of the tournament.
Fakhar Zaman scored 13 and captain Salman Agha 19 as Pakistan tottered at 49-5.
It was a seventh-wicket stand of 38 between Mohammad Haris (31) and Mohammad Nawaz (25) that helped Pakistan add 52 in the last five overs.
Haris hit two boundaries and a six while Nawaz’s 15-ball knock had two sixes and a boundary.
Shaheen, dropped twice by Bangladesh fielders, hit two sixes in his rapid 13-ball 19.

MIAMI: Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets will retire from football at the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season, his club Inter Miami said on Thursday.
Busquets came up through the Barcelona youth ranks and spent 18 years overall at the club, making his senior debut in 2008, before joining Miami in 2023 where he was reunited with former teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.
He played 143 times for the national team and was part of the side that won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the European Championship two years later in Poland and Ukraine.
“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of,” Busquets said in a video posted on Instagram.
“I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful... Thank you all very much, see you soon.”
Widely considered to be one of the best defensive midfielders ever to have played the game, Busquets made more than 700 appearances for Barcelona, winning nine LaLiga crowns and three Champions League trophies among his collection of major trophies with the club.
After moving to the US, the 37-year-old won the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield and will play the final few matches of his career in the MLS playoffs.
