LONDON: Manchester City and Aston Villa made big moves just before the midseason transfer window closed on Monday.

Four-time defending Premier League champion City secured a late deal for Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez for a reported $60 million, while three-time Champions League winner Marco Asensio joined Villa on loan to the end of the season.

Uncertainty over Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel finally ended when he completed a loan move to Tottenham with the option of a permanent deal in the summer.

Paris Saint-Germain was one of the most active clubs during the window by signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli, and releasing several players.

Man City go big to salvage season

City usually make their moves in the offseason. But in a bid to rescue a campaign that unraveled at the end of last year and was derailed again in a 5-1 loss at Arsenal, City spent big in January on five new signings. Gonzalez took City outlay past $200 million.

City signed Egypt forward Omar Marmoush for $73 million and defenders Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis for a combined $77 million. Christian McFarlane, an 18-year-old left back, joined from sister club New York City FC while captain Kyle Walker left for AC Milan.

Gonzalez’s arrival finally gives City a defensive midfielder in the mold of Rodri — the Ballon d’Or holder who was ruled out of the season in September by an ACL injury.

The Premier League title looks well beyond City, who are 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, and a Champions League bid has been made extra difficult after being drawn against holder Real Madrid in the playoffs. But City manager Pep Guardiola will hope the new additions can return the club to the Champions League next season.

PSG re-enter the ‘galactico’ market

Paris Saint-Germain has lost much of their star appeal in recent years following the departures of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. A shift in strategy has seen the Qatar-backed club focus more on younger and French talents rather than superstar names.

But the Kvaratskhelia deal for a reported fee of around $72 million represents another marquee signing.

The Georgia forward isn’t at the level of Messi and Neymar but he has long been among the most sought-after players in Europe with thrilling, match-winning qualities.

PSG offloaded striker Randal Kolo Muani — a $101 million signing last season — to Juventus on loan, and central defender Milan Skriniar to Fenerbahce, and Asensio.

Villa’s Champions League push

Through to the Champions League last 16, Aston Villa boosted their attacking options in the form of Marcus Rashford and Asensio.

Rashford was one of the big stories of the window after falling out of favor at Manchester United. Despite being linked with clubs across Europe, as well as Ƶ, he secured a loan to Villa for the rest of the season.

If Unai Emery can get the best out of the former England international, he could prove an inspired signing in terms of Villa’s Champions League campaign and push for a top four finish. Meanwhile, in former Real Madrid forward Asensio, Villa has a player with Champions League-winning knowhow.

Saudi recruitment stalls?

Neymar’s high-profile move to Ƶ was cut short last week when the Brazil great’s contract was terminated by Al-Hilal and he left for boyhood club Santos.

Along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, the former Barcelona and PSG superstar was a standout signing as Ƶ launched a recruitment drive to lure the world’s top players. But injury meant Neymar was reduced to seven games for Al-Hilal following his 2023 move for a reported $98 million and his departure brought an underwhelming end to his time in the Kingdom.

Previously, Jordan Henderson left Al-Ettifaq after just six months to join Ajax, and Portuguese forward Jota spent a year at Al-Ittihad before leaving for French team Rennes. Jota rejoined Celtic during this window.

The big signing for the Saudi league during this window was Jhon Duran, the Colombia striker who joined Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr from Villa for a reported £64 million ($80 million).

Perhaps bigger is to come in the future, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah out of contract at the end of the season and repeatedly linked with a move.

Relief for Barcelona

Rather than bringing in new players, Barcelona’s biggest challenge was registering two it already owned.

Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor were registered only after the government sports authority intervened. The Spanish league and the federation had denied Barcelona’s request to re-register the duo because it missed the end-of-year deadline to comply with salary cap rules.

Barcelona accused the league of making unrealistic requests for extra documentation and said payment for VIP seating at the new Camp Nou stadium became available only on Jan. 3. That payment allowed the club to comply with the league’s financial fair play rules.

Major moves in women’s soccer

The deals are getting bigger in women’s soccer.

US defender Naomi Girma became the first million-dollar player in the women’s game when she moved from the San Diego Wave to Chelsea, which also spent big to bring England midfielder Keira Walsh back to the Women’s Super League from Barcelona.

The deadline for the women’s game passed last week.

The 15-time European champions traveled nearly 6,500 kilometers to play the game
Arda Güler sent Mbappé though for his third goal in the 73rd

ALMATY: Kylian Mbappé scored a hat trick as Real Madrid shrugged off any travel weariness in a 5-0 win at Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
The 15-time European champions traveled nearly 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers) to play the game in the eastern Kazakh city, Kairat’s first home match in the competition.
The enthusiasm showed with Dastan Satpayev testing Thibault Courtois after just 13 seconds and Jorginho trying his luck a minute later.
Mbappé settled any visiting nerves by dispatching a penalty in the 25th after goalkeeper Sherkhan Kalmurza had brought down Franco Mastantuono.
Mbappé went close again before the break but ultimately the visitors appeared content to let the ball circulate without forcing the initiative too much.
The second half started in the same vein until Courtois caught the Kairat defense out with a long clearance and Mbappé lobbed the ball over Kalmurza in the 52nd for his second goal.
Kairat might have had a way back into the game when Dani Ceballos was penalized for an apparent foul on Valery Gromyko, but referee Marco Guida changed his mind after a VAR review.
Arda Güler sent Mbappé though for his third goal in the 73rd, when the France star completed his fourth hat trick in the competition. Only Robert Lewandowski (6) and Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi (8) have more.
Substitute Eduardo Camavinga scored his first-ever goal in the competition 10 minutes later, and fellow substitute Brahim Díaz completed the scoring in stoppage time.
Atalanta came from behind to beat Club Brugge 2-1 in the other early game.

Former Barca chief Bartomeu accused of disloyal administration
  • Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019
  • Prosecutors have accused Bartomeu of “disloyal administration” and of having “caused damage” to the club

BARCELONA: Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been accused by Spanish prosecutors of disloyal administration, according to documents seen by AFP on Tuesday.
Bartomeu and other former club directors are accused of making unjustified payments between 2015 and 2019.
According to a court document seen by AFP, the prosecution has accused the former Barcelona president of “disloyal administration” and of having “caused damage” to the club by “failing to fulfil the duties of diligence and loyalty” implied by his role.
The former Barca chief, in charge from 2014 to 2020, will have to explain alleged hidden commissions paid, most notably in the club’s signing of Brazil winger Malcom from Bordeaux in 2018 for over 40 million euros ($47 million).
Other areas in which there are apparent irregularities include the legal case surrounding the club’s signing of Neymar, and the Espai Barca project to transform the Camp Nou stadium and surrounding area.
Current Barcelona president Joan Laporta presented an in-depth report to prosecutors earlier this year, after hiring investigators to analyze how the club had been run in the years prior.
Barcelona have been in a tough financial position over the past few years after heavy spending during Bartomeu’s reign, including buying Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann for a combined total cost of more than 400 million euros.
A statement issued by Bartomeu’s lawyers said that although he may have “made mistakes” during his reign, there is not “the slightest indication that he has obtained any personal financial benefit” as a result of his decisions while at the helm.

PSG’s injuries mount but Luis Enrique unfazed before Barcelona game in Champions League
  • “You can either get results or make excuses. Whoever plays tomorrow is part of a real team,” Enrique said
  • “We are lucky to have very good players in every position and to have the finances to recruit very good players”

PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique refused to complain about the mounting injuries affecting his team before Wednesday’s Champions League match at Barcelona.
Defending champion PSG will be without star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and forward Désiré Doué.
They are all out injured along with central defender Marquinhos, the club captain, while PSG have doubts over the fitness of key midfielders Vitinha and João Neves.
“You can either get results or make excuses. Whoever plays tomorrow is part of a real team,” Luis Enrique said Tuesday at a pre-match news conference. “We are lucky to have very good players in every position and to have the finances to recruit very good players. So, if there’s a coach who can’t complain, then it’s me.”
Luis Enrique is uncertain if he will pick Vitinha, who came off in the first half against Auxerre on Saturday, or Neves, who missed the past two Ligue 1 games with a thigh injury.
“We will see how the players feel when they wake up tomorrow. It is not a decisive game, so we are calm,” Luis Enrique said. “The decision will come more from the players than from me.”
PSG began the defense of their first Champions League title with a 4-0 rout of Atalanta two weeks ago.
But a Barcelona team featuring the inspired passing of midfielder Pedri, the mesmeric runs of winger Lamine Yamal, and the lethal finishing of veteran Robert Lewandowski — third all-time with 105 Champions League goals — appears a far harder proposition. Hansi Flick’s team was a Champions League semifinalist last season.
“Without doubt Pedri is like Harry Potter, I hope he doesn’t bring his magic wand tomorrow. We’ll do all we can to make sure he is the least involved possible,” said Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League as Barcelona coach in 2015 and played for the club as a standout midfielder.
“The two teams have the same philosophy and way of playing,” he added. “The key will be which team manages to keep the ball.”
Losing it exposes PSG to the counter-attacking of Yamal, who finished second behind Dembélé in the Ballon d’Or vote and caused havoc with his runs down the right flank in the competition last season.
PSG right back Achraf Hakimi said Yamal “will be playing against the best left back in the world” in Nuno Mendes.
“He is capable of stopping Lamine,” Hakimi said. “The important thing is not to leave (Yamal) one on one, so we will help (Mendes) out.”

DP World ILT 20 auction propels the tournament’s growth
  • Auctioneer in Dubai will be Richard Madley, a veteran of 10 Indian Premier League auctions since its inception in 2008
  • Madley has played club cricket in Surrey and is a qualified umpire

DUBAI: When the fourth edition of the DP World ILT20 kicks off on Dec. 2 in Dubai, there will be a difference in the way that some of the players will have been selected.
This will be by auction in Dubai on Wednesday, Oct. 1. It is the same method used by the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008.
Then, the auctioneer was Richard Madley, who conducted a further nine IPL auctions. By quirk of circumstance, it is Madley who will conduct ILT20’s first ever auction.
It was my pleasure to be introduced to him two days prior to the auction to learn more about his experiences, skills and hopes for the ILT20. It seems that he was fated to be and auctioneer. Both his father and father-in-law were auctioneers, whilst his mother-in-law was an antiques dealer.
He started young in collecting objects and now specializes, among other things, in oriental carpets. His love for cricket began at junior school in Cardiff, Wales, where dreams and ambitions of playing professionally were nurtured.
This has been the case for many other children, who, like Madley, realized that the dreams would never be realized. However, he did represent his native Wales at hockey.
Madley has played club cricket in Surrey and is a qualified umpire, but it is with the gavel in auctioneering that he has made his mark in cricket, acquiring the sobriquet of “Hammerman” in India.
It was there, he says, that he realized that cricket had changed forever when M.S. Dhoni was bought for $1.5 million in the first IPL auction. Madley likened the event to the Wild West when nobody quite knew what they were doing.
Now, he sees his role as overseeing a fair distribution of players across franchises to achieve a balance between them. He believes that a knowledge of cricket helps in that process, as does humor.
His focus is firmly on the franchises. In the ILT20 auction he expects some surprises, but would not be drawn into more detail. There are players from upwards of thirty countries registered, so he is likely to be right.
The primary purpose of the franchise league auction has developed another wing, that of marketing and profile building. This has been evident in the IPL and was markedly so this year when the auction was held in Jeddah, sparking renewed rumors of Ƶ’s motivations in cricket.
Today, these have been given a further boost by the news that DP World ILT20 is to join forces with the Ƶn Cricket Federation to advance cricket in the region. In the first place, it is intended that there will be increased opportunities for Saudi players to play in international tournaments.
These are vital to nurture their development and allow them to carry their gained knowledge back into the domestic game. In the upcoming auction, each franchise must secure at least one player from Ƶ, so the process is about start.
There is also an intent that, in forthcoming seasons, the partnership will witness ILT20 matches being played in Ƶ. This will require the provision of facilities of appropriate standards. No timescale was specified for this ambition, but the agreement should provide a basis for its advancement.
The partnership also aligns with ILT20’s strategy to expand and enrich cricket across the Gulf region. This is already evident in its links with Kuwait Cricket with which it established a strategic partnership in June 2025 to assist in the growth and promotion of cricket in that country.
The first evidence of this was the DP World ILT20 Development Tournament, played between Sept. 4-12, 2025.
It is clear that the ILT20 is embarked on a two-pronged strategy of expanding its reach with the Gulf and enhancing its profile through the player auction initiative.
These are exciting times for cricket in the region.

Barca star Yamal must ‘work hard’ to reach top level, says Flick
  • “(Calling him) super, super, super... I don’t like this... he’s 18 years old and for me he also has to focus on working hard,” Flick told reporters
  • “It’s not only about playing with the ball, it’s also defending”

BARCELONA: Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Tuesday if teenage star Lamine Yamal is to improve he must focus on improving his work rate, ahead of the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
The holders visit Barcelona on Wednesday and 18-year-old winger Yamal is keen to shine after finishing as runner-up at the Ballon d’Or gala last week, behind PSG’s Ousmane Dembele.
Yamal returned from a groin injury on Sunday against Real Sociedad in La Liga and provided an assist a minute after coming off the bench during a bright second-half cameo.
“(Calling him) super, super, super... I don’t like this... he’s 18 years old and for me he also has to focus on working hard,” Flick told reporters.
“It’s not always easy, with talent you can get to this point, but to reach the next level, one or two steps more — and I think he’s able to do that — he has to work hard.”
Last season Barcelona won a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, but fell just short in the Champions League, beaten in the semifinals by Inter Milan despite two sensational displays by Yamal.
Against Luis Enrique’s attacking PSG side Flick demanded Yamal and his team-mates knuckle down when the French champions are in possession.
“It’s not only about playing with the ball, it’s also defending,” continued Flick.
“This is what we need from every player — even a great player with the ball like him — and this makes the difference.”
Flick said to beat PSG his team had to concentrate from “the first second to the end of the match” and play at their highest level.

- Rashford has ‘arrived’ -

The coach also praised Marcus Rashford, who has established himself on the left flank for Barca.
With Raphinha out injured, Rashford is set to start against PSG. The forward, on loan from Manchester United, netted twice in Barcelona’s opening Champions League win at Newcastle.
“Everyone can see it in the last games, the Newcastle match gives him a lot of confidence and now he’s here, he’s now arrived in Barcelona,” said Flick.
“This is not always easy, to come to La Liga... with different opponents, a different style of how we play football, he’s adapted (well).”
PSG will be without first-choice attackers Dembele, formerly a Barca player, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, among other missing stars.
Barca midfielder Pedri said he considered his team favorites to win the game.
“PSG are one of the best teams in the world, and we are the best — or at least that’s how I see it,” he told reporters.
The French side beat Barca 4-1 the last time the teams met, in the 2024 quarter-finals, after Barca defender Ronald Araujo was sent off. PSG progressed 6-4 on aggregate.
“Every Barca fan knows that we were close to going through two seasons ago,” said Pedri.
“There’s always revenge in football and that’s what we want — it’s the kind of game that’s most enjoyable.”
