  • Reigning champion Elena Rybakina progresses to the semifinals after winning third-set tie-break against the Tunisian crowd favorite

ABU DHABI: Ons Jabeur exited the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open at the quarterfinal stage for the second consecutive year after losing a thrilling encounter against reigning champion Elena Rybakina on Thursday.

The defending champion now joins Belinda Bencic, Ashlyn Krueger and Linda Noskova in Friday’s semifinals.

The sixth meeting between Jabeur and Rybakina more than lived up to the pre-match hype. On Stadium Court they played an absolute classic that was ultimately settled by a tie-break.

Having had to come from behind to defeat Katie Volynets in the last 16, Rybakina enjoyed a far better start this time, dominating Jabeur in the first set, before the Tunisian claimed the second to set up a decisive third.

Rybakina seemed destined for victory when, leading 3-2, she broke her opponent’s serve, but Jabeur displayed nerves of steel to break back immediately and win her subsequent service game to level it 4-4.

The next four games, although back and forth, went with serve, forcing a decisive tie-break which Rybakina eventually clinched, for a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6,  victory. It brought an end to Jabeur’s involvement, much to the disappointment of her fans inside Stadium Court.

In the day’s opening quarterfinal, 2023 champion Bencic faced Marketa Vondrousova, who had already seen off Emma Raducanu and Yulia Putintseva. This was a repeat of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics final, where Bencic claimed gold.

Bencic secured her spot in the last eight courtesy of a dominant win over Veronika Kudermetova, in which she did not drop a single game, and while she eventually prevailed, Thursday’s encounter was a far sterner test.

The fact the match featured 11 breaks of serve is perhaps indicative of the disrupted rhythm of the players. But having edged in front at the start of the contest, Bencic did just enough to hold on and claim the first set 7-5.

Having returned from maternity leave last October, Bencic is slowly getting back to her best, as showcased by her performances to date in Abu Dhabi. A controlled, assured display in the second set secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory, ensuring the 27-year-old is through to the semifinals.

After producing a superb comeback to eliminate last year’s beaten finalist Daria Kasatkina in the round of 16, Krueger came out on top in a three-set thriller against 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez to secure a first WTA 500 semifinal spot.

It was a fully deserved victory for the American, 20, who fired eight aces, including five in the opening set, which she edged 7-5.

Fernandez responded well and, despite not being at her best, highlighted by seven double faults, still produced some brilliant tennis, more than playing her part in a highly entertaining contest.

She took the second set, forcing a third, from which point on it was all about Krueger, who displayed fantastic power and technique to pull away from her opponent, eventually progressing 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Krueger now faces Noskova, also 20, in a battle of the rising talents. Noskova followed up yesterday’s outstanding win over Paula Badosa with another straight-sets victory, this time against Magda Linette 6-4, 6-3.

Minnows Mjallby on verge of ‘impossible’ Swedish title win
Should the tiny club from a fishing village on the Listerlandet peninsula do so it will be the greatest shock in the history of football
A combination of superb scouting and a science-based approach have helped Mjallby top the 16-team league

STOCKHOLM: The nervousness of Hammarby and AIK fans ahead of Sunday’s Stockholm derby will pale into insignificance compared to those of Swedish minnows Mjallby AIF, who will become Swedish champions if Hammarby fail to beat their city rivals.
Should the tiny club from a fishing village on the Listerlandet peninsula do so it will be the greatest shock in the history of football, according to Torbjorn Andersson, an academic specializing in football at Malmo University.
“(It would be) completely unique in the history of football, and that it’s happening now is even more unlikely,” he told broadcaster Radiosporten ahead of what could be the decisive weekend in the Allsvenskan title race.
A combination of superb scouting and a science-based approach have helped Mjallby top the 16-team league on 63 points after 26 games, 11 points ahead of second-placed Hammarby, whose resources dwarf those of their smaller southern rivals.
Though the club draws support from all over the county of Solvesborg, the town of Mjallby has a tiny population of just over 1,200, and academic Andersson said that, on paper, a club of their stature should have no chance of winning the title.
“There’s so much money in it (football), it should be totally impossible,” he said as Mjallby look to replace Malmo, who have won the title a record 27 times, as champions.
“If you look at the annual reports the (Swedish) football association has published ... I think Malmo last year, in 2024, had eight times more and the Stockholm clubs have four or five times more turnover than Mjallby.”
Anything other than a win for “Bajen,” as Hammarby are known, at home to fourth-placed AIK on Sunday would mean Mjallby being crowned champions without kicking a ball.
AIK supporters would like nothing more than to be the team that end Hammarby’s title aspirations.
Should they do so, Mjallby’s trip to IFK Gothenburg on Monday will turn into a 300-km victory parade. The club’s “Sillastrybarna” supporters group has six buses booked for the journey, with at least 1,500 tickets sold to away fans.
Even if Hammarby win the derby, Mjallby can still secure the title with a win on Monday, which would preserve their 11-point lead with three games left to play.
“Under normal circumstances, this is a trip that would have required one bus, but we sold out more or less five buses in one day,” Kristofer Rasmusson, representative of the fan group, told broadcaster SVT as tension mounted ahead of a decisive weekend.

Players in LaLiga protest over plans for Barca-Villarreal match in US
  • Oviedo and Espanyol players stood still in the first 15 seconds of their LaLiga clash on Friday in the first protest
  • Louzan on Thursday defended the decision to move the match, calling it a “reward for fans“

MADRID: LaLiga players will stage symbolic protests at the start of most matches this weekend over the league’s decision to stage a game in the US in December, the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) has said.
Oviedo and Espanyol players stood still in the first 15 seconds of their LaLiga clash on Friday in the first protest, demanding better transparency and dialogue from authorities.
Players of Barcelona and Villarreal, whose teams are scheduled to play in Miami on December 20, have been kept out of the initiative “to avoid the protest action being interpreted as a possible measure against any club,” the players’ union said.

“In view of LaLiga’s constant refusals and unrealistic proposals, the Spanish Footballers’ Association categorically rejects a project that does not have the approval of the main protagonists of our sport,” AFE said in a statement on Friday.
LaLiga confirmed earlier this month that Barca’s away game against Villarreal would take place in Miami, after European soccer governing body UEFA’s reluctant approval.
Real Madrid had opposed the decision in August, saying it could undermine football’s competitive balance.
Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) President Rafael Louzan on Thursday defended the decision to move the match, calling it a “reward for fans.”
The AFE said it wanted league authorities to share information, analyze the “exceptional characteristics of the project” and address the needs and concerns of the players.

Postecoglou fired around 20 minutes after Forest lose 3-0 to Chelsea in Premier League
  • It left Postecoglou without a win in eight matches since taking charge as the replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo on Sept. 9
  • Forest said Postecoglou was “relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect”

LONDON: Around 20 minutes. That’s how long it took Nottingham Forest to fire Ange Postecoglou after the team’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
It left Postecoglou without a win in eight matches since taking charge as the replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo on Sept. 9.
In a 39-word statement, Forest said Postecoglou was “relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect” after “a series of disappointing results and performances.”
British media has already been linking former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche with the job, should Postecoglou get fired.

Now he has gone — after just 39 days at the helm.
Loud jeers
Goals early in the second half by Josh Acheampong and Pedro Neto, and another by Reece James in the 84th minute, earned Chelsea a victory that prompted loud jeers inside the City Ground at fulltime.
Postecoglou had been in defiant mood in recent weeks, even delivering a five-minute monologue on Friday in which he rejected talk that he was a “failed manager” and promised to win a trophy at Forest — just like he did at Tottenham last season before being fired.
However, Forest lost six and drawn the other two of their eight games under Postecoglou. That included four losses from five in the league, scoring just one goal in the process, to leave Forest hovering just above the bottom three.
A slack few minutes after halftime cost Forest dearly, with 19-year-old defender Acheampong heading home a left-wing cross by Neto in the 49th before Neto smashed home a shot from a indirect free kick in the 52nd.
James drilled in a third after Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels flapped at a corner, leading to hordes of home fans leaving the stadium and the Chelsea away supporters chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning” toward Postecoglou.
Chelsea right back Malo Gusto was sent off in the 87th for collecting a second yellow card.
What’s to come
Later Saturday, there are six more matches including league leader Arsenal at Fulham in a London derby and Manchester City hosting Everton.

  • A shower caused a 15-minute break while England was batting
  • Most of a sell-out crowd had already left Hagley Oval

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand: Rain forced the abandonment of the first Twenty20 international between New Zealand and England after the visitors posted 153-6 in their completed innings Saturday.
Sam Curran top-scored with 49 not out from 35 balls. He hit three fours and two sixes — and 19 runs from the final over of the England innings.
Jos Buttler with 29 from 25 balls and Harry Brook with 20 from 14 both made starts but were unable to go on as the England batters struggled when the New Zealand bowlers took the pace off the ball.
A shower caused a 15-minute break while England was batting, then returned more heavily between innings, finally causing the match to be abandoned around 10.10 p.m. local time. By then, most of a sell-out crowd had already left Hagley Oval.
The remaining two matches of the series are also scheduled to be played at Hagley Oval — on Monday and Thursday.

Rybakina blasts past Paolini to reach Ningbo final
  • Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday
  • the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo

NINGBO, China: Elena Rybakina powered into the Ningbo Open final with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Paolini on Saturday that keeps her chances alive of qualifying for the WTA Finals.
Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday.
But the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo, with Mirra Andreeva also still in contention.
“I knew the match was going to be very tough,” said Rybakina, who improved her head-to-head record against Paolini to 3-3.
“Jasmine has played really well this season and she’s a really tough opponent, so I knew I would need to bring my best.
“I’m happy I stayed focused until the end and won it in straight sets.”
Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina entered the semifinals having lost her last two meetings with Paolini but utilized her big serve and powerful groundstrokes to win in 90 minutes.
Rybakina fired 30 winners, including 10 aces, and saved all seven break points she faced to reach her second final of the season, where she will face either Diana Shnaider or Ekaterina Alexandrova.
