British trainer George Scott thriving in Middle East as Phantom Flight targets Bahraini Triple Crown
  • Newmarket-based handler has enjoyed remarkable success in the region

LONDON: British trainer George Scott is making waves in the Middle East with a string of impressive victories across Bahrain and Dubai, and soon, he hopes, in 萝莉视频.

The Newmarket-based handler has enjoyed remarkable success, most notably guiding Isle of Jura to a historic Bahraini Triple Crown in 2024 for Sheikh Nasser Al-Khalifa鈥檚 Victorious Racing.

Scott鈥檚 winning form has continued into the 2025 season, with Phantom Flight securing victory in The Crown Prince Cup, the first leg of the Bahraini Triple Crown. The gelding is now poised to follow in Isle of Jura鈥檚 footsteps.

鈥淧hantom Flight has gone from strength to strength physically and mentally in Bahrain. He鈥檚 thrived there and has taken a big step forward on his last start. I am very much looking forward to HH Sheikh Nasser鈥檚 Cup in a few weeks鈥 time and then The King鈥檚 Cup. Hopefully he can follow Isle of Jura,鈥 Scott said in comments to Great British Racing International.

Reflecting on his successful campaign in Bahrain, Scott praised the teamwork behind his achievements.

鈥淚鈥檝e loved my season in Bahrain. It鈥檚 been an incredible success so far; all credit goes to my staff out there and my owners Sheikh Nasser and the City House boys. Those horses have been selected for that purpose and it has gone well so far.鈥

Scott鈥檚 winning touch has also extended to Dubai, where West Acre stormed to victory in the Group 2 Blue Point Sprint. The three-year-old sprinter is now being primed for Super Saturday, with hopes of securing a place on the prestigious Dubai World Cup card.

鈥淲est Acre has always been a horse that we held in very high regard at home. It鈥檚 been well documented that he picked up an injury in the spring last year which meant he could not have a conventional two-year-old campaign. Last time he gave us one of those moments that rarely happens on the racetrack; he really impressed me with his turn of foot,鈥 Scott said.

Looking ahead, Scott has high hopes for his charge on one of the biggest nights in global racing.

鈥淗e will go to Super Saturday now and then onto the Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night, all being well. He鈥檚 shown a liking to the track at Meydan and we are all hoping he can repeat that performance again, because if he does, he will be a Group 1 sprinter. We will then consider long-term plans for him, but the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes over five furlongs (1,006 meters) at Royal Ascot is in the picture.鈥

Scott鈥檚 Middle Eastern campaign extends to 萝莉视频, where Prydwen is set to make his debut in the Group 2 Red Sea Turf Handicap on Feb. 22 as part of the Saudi Cup meeting. The seven-year-old, who won the German St. Leger last year, recently finished fourth in a Group 3 contest at Meydan, beaten by just a length.

鈥淧rydwen took a little time to acclimatize to life in the Middle East and I was much happier with him going into his second race. He鈥檚 come forward again for that run and I am looking forward to the Red Sea Turf,鈥 Scott said.

鈥淚t will be my first runner in Saudi, something that I鈥檝e always wanted to do. We are under no illusions as to how difficult a race it will be but he should enjoy the conditions and the trip. It will be an interesting first runner for us and hopefully we will spend more time there in the future,鈥 he added.

With major targets on the horizon in Bahrain, Dubai and 萝莉视频, Scott鈥檚 presence in the Middle Eastern racing scene is growing stronger by the day. His continued success highlights the increasing global footprint of British trainers and the strength of British-trained horses on the international stage.

Leylah Fernandez beats Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 to win the DC Open for her biggest title
  • The 22-year-old from Canada, who is ranked 36th, earned her fourth singles trophy and first at a WTA 500 event
  • She came quite close to a Grand Slam championship as a teenager at the 2021 US Open, losing to Emma Raducanu in the final
  • There almost was a rematch in Washington, but Kalinskaya eliminated Raducanu in the semifinals Saturday

WASHINGTON: Leylah Fernandez collected the biggest title of her career at the D.C. Open with her most lopsided victory of the tournament, defeating Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 in the final on Sunday.
The left-handed Fernandez, a 22-year-old from Canada who is ranked 36th, earned her fourth singles trophy 鈥 all have come at hard-court tournaments 鈥 and first at a WTA 500 event. She came quite close to a Grand Slam championship as a teenager at the 2021 US Open, making it all the way to the final in New York before losing to Emma Raducanu.
There almost was a rematch in Washington, but Kalinskaya eliminated Raducanu in the semifinals Saturday.
Until Sunday, the 48th-ranked Kalinskaya had not dropped a set all week.
However, she wasn鈥檛 able to keep up with Fernandez, who saved the only break point she faced while taking four of Kalinskaya鈥檚 service games in a match that lasted 1 hour, 10 minutes. One key: Fernandez claimed 10 of the 12 points in the match when Kalinskaya hit a second serve.

Another: Kalinskaya finished with 24 unforced errors and just nine winners.
This was the first title for Fernandez since October 2023 at the Hong Kong Open.
She dedicated this victory to her mother, her older sister and her fitness trainer.
鈥淭hank you so much for never giving up on me 鈥 and don鈥檛 give up on yourselves,鈥 Fernandez said. 鈥淭his trophy is for you guys.鈥
She arrived in Washington with a losing record this season and hadn鈥檛 won more than two matches at the same tournament since last November.
With a mix of baseline excellence and strong net play, Fernandez eliminated top-seeded Jessica Pegula 鈥 the US Open runner-up last year 鈥 and No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina 鈥 the Wimbledon champion in 2022 鈥 on the way to the final.
The win against Rybakina in Saturday鈥檚 semifinals took three tiebreakers and more than three hours to decide.
鈥淎mazing fight this week,鈥 Kalinskaya told Fernandez after the title match. 鈥淵ou truly deserve it.鈥
There was no such drama against Kalinskaya, a 26-year-old Russian who fell to 0-3 in tour-level finals. She lost to Jasmine Paolini in Dubai and to Pegula in Berlin last year.
The men鈥檚 final scheduled for later Sunday was No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur against No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated No. 1 Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Ben Shelton in the semifinals.

  • The win marked his third in a row and Jaguar's fifth in six races

LONDON: Nick Cassidy capped off his final weekend with Jaguar TCS Racing in spectacular fashion, claiming victory in Round 16 at the London E-Prix.

The win marked his third in a row and Jaguar's fifth in six races, wrapping up an emotional send-off for both the New Zealander and team principal James Barclay.

Cassidy鈥檚 lights-to-flag triumph at a sold-out ExCeL London also secured him second place in the FIA Drivers鈥 World Championship.

Having scored just a single point in the opening six rounds of the season, his late surge underlined a remarkable turnaround.

鈥淗onestly I love racing in this place,鈥 said Cassidy.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not been that kind to me in the last few years, but this weekend it鈥檚 absolutely delivered. When this stadium is packed full of people it鈥檚 a pleasure to race here and it鈥檚 great for Formula E. Also, it鈥檚 my last race for the team, again I鈥檝e had the best car today, and this one is 100 percent for them.

鈥淲hen the tyres are working well, when the car鈥檚 perfect, everything becomes efficient. For sure it wasn鈥檛 easy at the start to keep the lead, but I think between Mitch (Evans) and myself we could manage that well. I鈥檓 gutted for him, to have had a one-two would have been perfect,鈥 he added.

Cassidy finished 13.5 seconds clear of Mahindra Racing鈥檚 Nyck de Vries, the second-largest winning margin in Formula E history. Only Antonio F茅lix da Costa has previously won three consecutive races.

鈥淚t was certainly a very challenging race,鈥 said de Vries.

鈥淥bviously Nick didn鈥檛 want to get too down on energy versus everyone behind, so he was making sure he stayed on the same energy as us and that resulted in a little bit of a concertina effect behind us.

鈥淚鈥檓 very pleased to bring home another podium and give P4 to our team, because they鈥檝e done an incredible job. To consider that last year we qualified last on merit, and we鈥檝e come back from such a long way 鈥 finishing fourth in the championship here this year is a great effort, so I鈥檓 very proud of everyone at Mahindra,鈥 he added.

Envision Racing鈥檚 Sebastien Buemi completed the podium, charging through the field from 19th on the grid to third place, his second podium in three races after also finishing in the top three in Jakarta.

鈥淚n the end it was important to not get caught up in those incidents, I think I was lucky enough to make sure I was avoiding them well,鈥 said Buemi.

鈥淚 saved quite a bit of energy at the beginning and that basically allowed me to take the ATTACK MODE properly. So in the end I鈥檓 very happy with that, it鈥檚 good for the Teams鈥 Championship, and it鈥檚 good when you have a bad qualifying like that to finish and score some good points.鈥

Jake Dennis of the Andretti Formula E Team crossed the line in fourth, while Jaguar鈥檚 Mitch Evans was classified fifth after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding under Full Course Yellow conditions 鈥 a punishment that dropped him from the second place he had claimed on track.

Newly-crowned drivers鈥 world champion Oliver Rowland failed to finish after a collision with Nico Mueller on Lap 16 forced both out of the race. Despite the DNF, Rowland received a hero鈥檚 reception from the London crowd, having sealed his championship title earlier in Berlin.

With Rowland鈥檚 early exit, Nissan鈥檚 slim hopes of overtaking Porsche in the Teams鈥 and Manufacturers鈥 standings came to an end. Porsche, who had quietly gathered momentum throughout the season, clinched both the FIA Teams鈥 World Championship and the inaugural FIA Manufacturers鈥 title 鈥 their first in Formula E.

Jaguar TCS Racing also overtook Nissan to secure second place in both championship standings, closing out a high point in their final race under Barclay鈥檚 leadership after 127 starts in the all-electric series.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing end to the campaign for NEOM McLaren. Both drivers 鈥 Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird 鈥 failed to finish the final race after separate incidents. The team concluded the season sixth in the Teams鈥 standings, with Barnard finishing fourth overall on 112 points and Bird eighteenth with 31 points.

BASEL: England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties to win the Women鈥檚 Euro 2025 and retain their title after Sunday鈥檚 final had finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.
Chloe Kelly scored the decisive kick in a shoot-out which saw three Spain players, including reigning Ballon d鈥橭r Aitana Bonmati, all fail to convert.

  • 24-year-old Australian managed his tires expertly to remain out of reach in the closing laps

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS: Series leader Oscar Piastri grabbed an early lead and extended his title advantage on Sunday when he drove to a perfectly-controlled triumph ahead of McLaren team-mate and title rival Lando Norris at a rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old Australian managed his tires expertly to remain out of reach in the closing laps as the Briton, 25, who had started on pole, closed in on a harder-wearing compound, finishing 3.415 seconds clear as McLaren reeled off their sixth 1-2 in a dominant season.

It was Piastri鈥檚 first win at the classic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, his sixth this season and the eighth of his career, extending his lead in the drivers鈥 championship to 16 points after 13 of this season鈥檚 24 races. For McLaren, it was a 10th win this year.

Charles Leclerc came a solid third for Ferrari ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, under the race leadership of new team boss Laurent Mekies for the first time, and Mercedes George Russell.

Alex Albon clung on to finish sixth for Williams ahead of chasing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, who started from the pit lane, and Racing Bulls鈥 rookie Liam Lawson.

Gabriel Botoleto was ninth for Sauber ahead of Pierre Gasly of Alpine.

鈥淭hat was lively,鈥 said the cool Piastri, who swept past Norris on lap one.

鈥淰ery lively. I knew that lap one was probably my best chance of winning the race. I lifted a little as I went through Eau Rouge and then it was enough.

鈥淭he rest of the race we managed really well. Maybe the medium wasn鈥檛 the best in the last five-six laps, but we had it almost under control! I was disappointed after yesterday, but it turns out that starting second was not too bad.鈥

Norris conceded he couldn鈥檛 have won.

鈥淥scar just did a good job 鈥 there鈥檚 nothing much more to say. He was committed a bit more in Eau Rouge and that was it. Oscar deserved it today.鈥

Leclerc said: 鈥淢ax was behind me all race within two seconds so it鈥檚 never easy. I knew the first part was the trickiest and I鈥檓 pretty happy we managed to keep that third place.鈥

The race began, after an 80-minute delay due to heavy rain, with the entire field on intermediates to run for four laps behind a safety car, clearing standing water.

Four drivers started from the pitlane 鈥 Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton 鈥 having made changes to their power units or set-up overnight. They began at the rear of the field ahead of the rolling start at the start of lap five.

As the lights went green, Norris powered away to lead through La Source, but he was unable to resist when Piastri sneaked out of his slipstream to take the lead going into Les Combes chicane.

鈥淲hy do I have no pack?鈥 asked Norris, realizing he lacked electric power. 鈥淲e used a lot on the safety car re-start,鈥 McLaren responded.

On lap 12, Hamilton was the first in for medium slick tires, rejoining 18th, followed by Piastri, Leclerc, Verstappen, Russell and more. Norris stayed out one lap longer for hards, hoping to profit if his rival鈥檚 rubber degraded in the closing laps. He was the only one.

By lap 15, everyone else had switched to mediums and it was Piastri on top ahead of Norris by 9.3 with Leclerc third leading Verstappen, Russell, Albon and... in flying form, Hamilton.

As Norris closed in, Piastri said his tires were already degrading. 鈥淚 think it will be tough to get to the end,鈥 he told race engineer Tom Stallard, raising the prospect of a dramatic finale.

On lap 26, Norris slid wide at Puhon, falling back to nine seconds adrift before remounting his charge. It was a process of marginal gains as Piastri managed his tires.

Norris was close but Piastri鈥檚 craft and calm prevailed.

  • The seven-times Formula One world champion won at Spa with Mercedes last year but has had a nightmare so far, qualifying 18th in Friday鈥檚 sprint qualifying and finishing 15th in Saturday鈥檚 100km race

FRANCORCHAMPS: Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday鈥檚 Belgian Grand Prix from the pit lane with a new power unit after qualifying only 16th, Ferrari said.
The seven-times Formula One world champion won at Spa with Mercedes last year but has had a nightmare so far, qualifying 18th in Friday鈥檚 sprint qualifying and finishing 15th in Saturday鈥檚 100km race.
Hamilton has won five times in Belgium and has been on the podium in all but two of the races he has finished at the longest circuit on the calendar.
The Briton, who moved to the Italian team in January and has yet to stand on the podium for them, apologized to Ferrari on Saturday for a performance he said was unacceptable.
Aston Martin鈥檚 Fernando Alonso and Mercedes鈥 Kimi Antonelli will also start from the pit lane after those teams also changed engine components.
Sunday鈥檚 race is set to be wet. The Formula Two feature race started behind the safety car while the Formula Three race was canceled entirely due to the conditions.
