Torres double helps Barcelona cruise to 3-0 victory over Getafe
  • Barca鈥檚 next test will be an away trip to face Real Oviedo on Thursday

BARCELONA: Ferran Torres scored twice as Barcelona cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Getafe in LaLiga on Sunday, with Dani Olmo adding the third goal and an assist in another impressive display by Hansi Flick鈥檚 side at their makeshift home venue.
The win keeps the unbeaten Catalans second in the standings with 13 points, trailing leaders Real Madrid by two points after Los Blancos maintained their flawless record with five wins from five matches by beating Espanyol on Saturday.
Playing in front of 6,000 rain-soaked fans at their Sant Joan Despi training ground, Barcelona controlled proceedings from the outset, showcasing their depth and resilience despite missing Lamine Yamal for the third consecutive game due to injury.
Torres, who got another chance to start in place of Robert Lewandowski in Flick鈥檚 rotation policy, opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a brilliant team move, firing past David Soria after Olmo鈥檚 clever back-heel set him up perfectly.
The Spanish forward doubled the advantage in the 34th minute, beating the offside trap from Raphinha鈥檚 through ball before delivering a tidy finish just inside the left post.
The 25-year-old Spanish international nearly completed his hat-trick before halftime but ended up striking the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after rounding the keeper.
The double takes him to four goals in five games this season, placing him second in the LaLiga scoring charts, just one goal behind Real Madrid鈥檚 Kylian Mbappe.
鈥淚 know I can be a starter at Barcelona and I need to take advantage of every opportunity I get. I鈥檓 confident many more goals will come,鈥 Torres told DAZN.
鈥淲e have quality players who can find space, and we鈥檝e done well in that regard and I鈥檓 glad that we won another one in decisive fashion.鈥
Barcelona continued to dominate after the break, and Marcus Rashford, who was rested following his midweek Champions League heroics against Newcastle, came off the bench to make an immediate impact.
The England international surged down the right flank in the 63rd minute and crossed to Olmo, who scored from inside the box to seal the victory.
The result continued Barca鈥檚 strong start to the campaign as they adapt to life at their cramped training ground venue as the renovations of their iconic Camp Nou have fallen nine months behind schedule.
The Lluis Companys Olympic stadium, which has been Barca鈥檚 base for the last three years, was not available on Sunday.
Barca鈥檚 next test will be an away trip to face Real Oviedo on Thursday, while eighth-placed Getafe will host Alaves on Wednesday.

Arsenal late show denies Man City, Villa still winless
  • Martinelli came off the bench to score for the second time in a week to salvage a 1-1 draw, but both sides lost more ground to Premier League leaders Liverpool

LONDON: Gabriel Martinelli鈥檚 93rd minute equalizer saved Arsenal鈥檚 Premier League title bid from a damaging defeat to Manchester City, while Aston Villa remain winless after a limp 1-1 draw at 10-man Sunderland.
The Gunners were heading to a second defeat in five Premier League games due to Erling Haaland鈥檚 early strike on the counter-attack for City.
Martinelli came off the bench to score for the second time in a week to salvage a 1-1 draw, but both sides lost more ground to Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Arsenal went second, five points behind the champions, while City are eight points off the top in ninth.
鈥淰ery disappointed not to win,鈥 said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. 鈥淚 think we played better than last year when we beat them (5-1).鈥
Arteta鈥檚 men had not conceded from open play in their first five Premier League and Champions League games this season, but were opened up on nine minutes by the scintillating form of arguably the world鈥檚 best striker.
Haaland started the move deep inside his own half with a lay-off to Tijjani Reijnders and then sprinted upfield to receive the Dutch international鈥檚 pass before coolly slotting beyond David Raya.
The Norwegian already has 13 goals for club and country in just eight games this season.
At the other end, City are reaping immediate dividends from the signing of giant Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Noni Madueke鈥檚 powerful near post strike was repelled by Donnarumma in what was Arsenal鈥檚 best attempt in a flat first-half performance.
Mikel Arteta threw on the creative talents of Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze at the start of the second period.
Eze tested Donnarumma once more but the Gunners struggled to break down City鈥檚 massed ranks of defense, with Guardiola even sacrificing Haaland and Phil Foden in the second half to bolster his back line.
However, that gamble backfired when Martinelli galloped onto Eze鈥檚 ball over the top and looped a fantastic finish over Donnarumma.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 try to be like this but when the opponent is better we defend deeper and counter-attack,鈥 said Guardiola.

- Villa lose 鈥榠dentity鈥 -

Villa鈥檚 rise over recent years under the tutelage of Unai Emery has ground to a halt as they remain in the bottom three with just three points from their opening five games.
Emery鈥檚 men could barely have asked for a better opportunity to end their wait for victory after Sunderland defender Reinildo Mandava was shown a red card on 33 minutes for kicking out at Matty Cash.
Villa had failed to score in their previous four league games but did finally break that drought when Cash tried his luck from long range and Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs was deceived by the power and swerve on the full-back鈥檚 strike.
The lead lasted just eight minutes, though, as Wilson Isidor pounced on Granit Xhaka鈥檚 header forward for his third goal in as many games at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League.
鈥淚t should have been easier to take advantage (against 10 men) but we were not playing with our identity, with the ideas we have been building in the last three years,鈥 said Emery.
Sunderland have made a great start to their quest to end the run of promoted sides being relegated straight back to the Championship.
The Black Cats sit seventh after losing only one of their opening five fixtures.
Newcastle are also struggling for goals in the absence of the departed Alexander Isak.
Eddie Howe鈥檚 men have drawn all three of their away games this season 0-0 and would have been happy just to come away from Bournemouth with a point after a short turnaround from their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Barcelona on Thursday.

Burke hits Bundesliga hat trick as Union Berlin beats Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3, Dortmund wins

BERLIN: Scottish forward Oliver Burke scored a Bundesliga hat trick as Union Berlin delivered a master class in counterattacking soccer before holding on to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-3 away on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Ilyas Ansah also starred, capitalizing on a mix-up in the Frankfurt defense to open the scoring in the ninth minute.
Ansah was involved again before Serbian forward Andrej Ili膰 sent Burke through for his first goal in the 32nd.
Nathaniel Brown pulled one back before the break but Frankfurt鈥檚 hopes of an equalizer were dented when Ansah got up after a foul and eluded two defenders before playing the ball out to Ili膰, who crossed for Burke to make it 3-1 in the 53rd.
Ili膰 also set up the next goal three minutes for his fourth assist. Burke finished with a delicate chip over Kaua Santos in the Frankfurt goal.
One young Frankfurt fan cried in disappointment.
But Can Uzun pulled one back in the 80th and Frankfurt got a penalty when Jonathan Burkardt went down spectacularly. Leopold Querfeld had his hand near the Frankfurt forward鈥檚 neck and was penalized after a VAR check. Burkardt stayed cool to score from the spot in the 87th.
Union coach Steffen Baumgart was sent off shortly afterward for kicking a paper cup in frustration.
Dortmund delight
Karim Adeyemi鈥檚 first-half rocket from 18 meters (yards) was enough for Borussia Dortmund to beat Wolfsburg 1-0 for its third straight Bundesliga win.
Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck returned after a six-month injury layoff because of a meniscus tear in his knee and played the whole game.
Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen made his Wolfsburg debut on the hour-mark but couldn鈥檛 prevent the team鈥檚 first league loss of the season.
Dortmund is second in the league, two points behind Bayern Munich.
Gladbach鈥檚 first goal
Haris Tabakovi膰 scored Borussia M枚nchengladbach鈥檚 first league goal of the season to earn a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the team鈥檚 first match since firing Gerardo Seoane as coach.
Tabakovi膰 equalized with a header off a corner in the second minute of stoppage time for Gladbach to get a deserved point in its first game under interim coach Eugen Polanski, previously the under-23 team coach.
American midfielder Malik Tillman put Leverkusen ahead on a counterattack in the 70th, but the home team鈥檚 performance shows there is still much work to do for new coach Kasper Hjulmand. He inherited the rebuilding project from Erik ten Hag, fired after just three games in charge.

Abhishek fires India to win over Pakistan in Dubai but no handshakes again
  • The rivals came into the contest of the regional tournament with tensions high after India angered Pakistan by also refusing to shake hands when the pair met in the group stage

DUBAI: Opener Abhishek Sharma hit a blazing 74 as India beat Pakistan by six wickets and again refused to shake hands with their opponents in the Super Four clash of the Asia Cup on Sunday.

Chasing 172 for victory, India rode on a 105-run opening stand between the left-handed Abhishek and Shubman Gill, who made 47, to achieve their target with seven balls to spare in Dubai.

The rivals came into the contest of the regional tournament with tensions high after India angered Pakistan by also refusing to shake hands when the pair met in the group stage.

Tempers flared on the field when Gill and Shaheen Afridi exchanged simmering glances after the batter hit the pace bowler for a boundary.

Both Abhishek and Gill came out roaring with a flurry of boundaries to unsettle the Pakistan attack as they raced to 101-0 in 9 overs.

Abhishek and Haris Rauf kept up the spice with a fiery exchange.

鈥淭oday was pretty simple, the way they were coming out to us without any reason, I did not like it at all,鈥 Abhishek said after being named player of the match.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I went after them. I wanted to deliver for the team.鈥

Medium-pace bowler Faheen Ashraf bowled Gill, and Rauf in the next over took down skipper Suryakumar Yadav for a duck to check India鈥檚 surge.

Abhishek fell to Abrar Ahmed鈥檚 leg spin after his 35-ball blitz laced with six fours and five sixes.

Rauf took one more wicket but Tilak Varma, with his unbeaten 30 off 19 balls, steered the team home off a six and a four.

The Indian batters quickly left the field while Pakistan players shook hands among themselves.

鈥淲e are yet to play a perfect game, but we are getting there,鈥 said Pakistan captain Salman Agha. 鈥淎 great game but in the powerplay (first six overs) they took the game away from us.鈥

- Gun celebration -

India won the toss and fielded first, but Pakistan came out attacking as Sahibzada Farhan, who hit 58, and Saim Ayub, who made 21, put on 72 runs for the second wicket, to help their team reach 171-5.

Fakhar Zaman opened with Farhan and started aggressively in his nine-ball 15 before being caught behind.

Farhan kept up the charge as he hit five fours and three sixes in his 45-ball knock as he reached his fifty with a six and celebrated by using his bat to mimmick a gun.

India hit back with three wickets, including Farhan who was dismissed by medium-pace bowler Shivam Dube, as Pakistan slipped to 115-4.

Mohammad Nawaz made 21 before he was run out.

Agha, on 17, and Faheem Ashraf, with 20 off eight balls, struck 22 between them to boost the total.

Dube stood out with figures of 2-33, but Indian fielders had a day to forget as they dropped four catches.

India beat Pakistan in their group match, which was the first cricketing clash between the rival nations since a four-day cross-border conflict in May left more than 70 people dead.

Andy Pycroft turned out as match referee for the Super Four match in spite of Pakistan lodging a protest with the International Cricket Council, alleging that the Zimbabwean had told Agha not to approach Suryakumar for a handshake.

The Pakistan Cricket Board demanded that Pycroft be removed from their matches and threatened to withdraw from the eight-team T20 competition.

Because of fraught political ties, nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan only meet at neutral venues during multi-team tournaments.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the other teams in the Super Four. The top two will move into the final on September 28.

Newcastle held to third straight away draw

Newcastle held to third straight away draw

BOURNEMOUTH: Newcastle United were held to a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday in a dull game of few chances as the visitors remain winless on the road.

Although Newcastle kept a third straight clean sheet on the road, it was also a third consecutive goalless draw that left Eddie Howe鈥檚 side 13th in the standings with six points while Bournemouth moved provisionally up to third on 10.

Howe made several changes to his lineup in search of his first league win against his former side, but despite a lively start from both teams, the first half lost momentum with injury stoppages and ended with few clear chances.

Newcastle had a penalty appeal waved away when Nick Woltemade had his shirt tugged, and Justin Kluivert nearly won it for Bournemouth with a free kick in added time, only for Nick Pope make a fine save.

Elsewhere, in Italian football, Lorenzo Pellegrini fired Roma to victory in the derby with Lazio on Sunday, the former captain coming in from the cold with the only goal in a 1-0 win at a boisterous Stadio Olimpico.

Roman-born Pellegrini lost the captaincy of his boyhood club and was placed on the transfer list over the summer, but he was decisive against Lazio in his first appearance of the season and put Roma fourth in Serie A on nine points.

Ahead of kick-off fans unfurled a banner which read 鈥渨elcome back, captain鈥 for Pellegrini who also had to have surgery for an injury to his right thigh in May.

鈥淚 never doubted their affection for me and I have a lot of love for them too,鈥 said Pellegrini to DAZN.

鈥淭he one constant is that I love Roma, and as long as I鈥檓 here there will never be a day in which I won鈥檛 give everything for the shirt.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know what will happen in the future because life is unpredictable ... I was close to leaving and I had no idea in what condition I would be after my injury, but I come back in the derby and scored the winning goal.鈥

Sunday鈥檚 38th-minute strike was Pellegrini鈥檚 fourth in a Rome derby and repaid the faith shown in him by new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who started the 29-year-old in one of Roma鈥檚 biggest games of the season.

Gasperini seemed to have frozen out Pellegrini who has 36 caps for Italy but on Saturday hinted at a place in the derby, while making it clear the player was on borrowed time unless he 鈥渂ecomes an athlete and starts running.鈥

And after the derby win he doubled down on Pellegrini needing to improve physically as Roma prepare to begin their Europa League campaign at Nice on Wednesday.

Lazio are stuck on three points from their first four matches of the season but could have easily come away with a point from a typically tense derby, even after losing Reda Belahyane to a straight red card.

Matteo Guendouzi made matters worse for 13th-placed Lazio when he was sent off for a rant at officials after the final whistle.

The only serious efforts before Pellegrini鈥檚 winner were from distance by Pedro and Mattia Zaccagni, the latter tipped over by Mile Svilar just before the half hour.

Lazio鈥檚 Nicolo Rovella burst down the right and sent across a teasing low cross which dribbled in front of the Roma goal but was too far away from his onrushing teammates.

Pellegrini stroked home his first goal since January after Devyne Rensch robbed a dozing Nuno Tavares and Matias Soule perfectly fed the Italy international for a first-time finish.

Roma pressed high in the hope of forcing mistakes from Lazio but it was the nominal away team who left a huge gap through which Boulaye Dia charged in the 54th minute only to blast over when one-on-one with Svilar.

Dia鈥檚 replacement Valentin Castellanos then whizzed a deflected effort just wide, before Danilo Cataldi came within millimeters of snatching a draw in stoppage time when his curling effort struck the outside of the post.
