  • Dutchman seizes pole from Piastri
  • Championship leader Norris crashes, qualifies 10th

JEDDAH: World champion Max Verstappen put Red Bull on pole position for the 萝莉视频n Grand Prix in track-record time on Saturday as McLaren鈥檚 Formula One leader Lando Norris hit the wall and qualified 10th.
McLaren鈥檚 Oscar Piastri, bidding to become the first Australian to lead the standings since Mark Webber in 2010, joined the four-times world champion on the front row for Sunday鈥檚 night race.
Mercedes鈥檚 George Russell and Ferrari鈥檚 Charles Leclerc will share the second row in third and fourth at the super-fast Corniche circuit where the winner has come from pole three out of four times previously.
鈥淭he car came alive in the night,鈥 exclaimed Verstappen after pipping Piastri by a mere 0.010 of a second.
The pole position changed hands three times in a final flurry of flying laps before the champion settled matters with a time of one minute 27.294 seconds.
鈥淚 think in the race it will be difficult to keep them behind. But we will give it a good go,鈥 said Verstappen, winner last year.
Italian 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli qualified fifth for Mercedes, with Carlos Sainz sixth for Williams and Lewis Hamilton only seventh for Ferrari.
Verstappen鈥檚 team mate Yuki Tsunoda will start eighth with Alpine鈥檚 Pierre Gasly ninth.
Norris was fastest in final practice and the second phase of qualifying, after Verstappen had led the first, but brought out red flags with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining when he hit the wall.
The Briton, who leads Piastri by three points after four races, signalled over the team radio that he was unhurt while calling himself an idiot with an exasperated expletive thrown in.
Piastri was the only one with a time on the board at that point, his 1:27.560 effort slower than Norris鈥檚 best of 1:27.481 in Q2.
Verstappen then went top when the track action resumed but Russell and Piastri went faster again before the Red Bull driver鈥檚 last effort.
Hamilton just squeezed through to the final top-10 shootout, the 40-year-old just 0.007 quicker than 11th-placed Alex Albon in the Williams.
Liam Lawson qualified 12th and ahead of his Racing Bulls rookie team mate Isack Hadjar in 14th.
Oliver Bearman, who made a sensational F1 debut with Ferrari as a stand-in at last year鈥檚 Saudi race, will line up 15th for Haas.
Aston Martin, marking their 100th Formula One race as a marque, had another difficult session with double world champion Fernando Alonso 13th and Lance Stroll 16th.

鈥榃hat a city鈥: Son Heung-min lands at Los Angeles FC with plans for trophies, love for Korean fans
  • Son: What can I say? Dream come true. LA, what a city
  • Son knows he鈥檒l have plenty of time to enjoy the town this time around as he begins the next chapter of his groundbreaking career with LAFC
  • LAFC formally introduced its new centerpiece at a packed news conference at BMO Stadium, where his likeness already looms over the main entrance gates and on video billboards for miles around the arena

LOS ANGELES: Son Heung-min made his first visit to Los Angeles seven years ago during Tottenham鈥檚 summer tour. He met with Los Angeles FC鈥檚 Korean supporters club and even donned a sombrero from grateful Mexican fans thanking the South Korean forward for scoring a famous goal in the 2018 World Cup.

Son planned another visit to Los Angeles and Las Vegas years ago, but he had to cancel the expensive trip after breaking his arm in a game.

鈥淚 thought I might never come back to Los Angeles, but now I鈥檓 here,鈥 Son said with a laugh.

Son knows he鈥檒l have plenty of time to enjoy the town this time around as he begins the next chapter of his groundbreaking career with LAFC.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to win, and I will perform,鈥 Son said Wednesday. 鈥淚 will definitely show you something exciting ... are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show some exciting football, and we definitely will have success.鈥

LAFC formally introduced its new centerpiece at a packed news conference at BMO Stadium, where his likeness already looms over the main entrance gates and on video billboards for miles around the arena. The 33-year-old superstar is back on the Pacific Rim after a professional career spent in Europe, including the past decade at Spurs.

鈥淲hat can I say? Dream come true. LA, what a city,鈥 said Son, who will wear No. 7 in black and gold.

Son signed with LAFC as a designated player through the 2027 season, and he has two contract options that could keep him with the Major League Soccer club through June 2029.

LAFC paid a transfer fee north of $20 million, likely an MLS record, for the league鈥檚 biggest signing since Lionel Messi.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to make this league even bigger, and I will do anything to make this club in a better position,鈥 Son said.

Son is widely considered the greatest Asian player in football history. He had suitors from around the globe after he decided to leave Spurs with a year left on his contract, and he said the decision to join LAFC initially wasn鈥檛 obvious.

He came around to the idea of moving to MLS after conversations with LAFC general manager John Thorrington, who sold Son on the 8-year-old club鈥檚 ambition to be an international brand and the most successful club in North America. He also embraced the opportunity to play in the city with the world鈥檚 largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea and a robust base of soccer fans from all backgrounds who appreciate his accomplishments.

鈥淚f I鈥檓 honest, it was not my first choice,鈥 Son said. 鈥淏ut (from the) first call when I talked to John after the season finished, he just changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be. Right now, I鈥檓 here. I鈥檓 more than happy.鈥

Son laughingly said he was also pitched aggressively by Hugo Lloris, his longtime teammate at Tottenham who is now LAFC鈥檚 starting goalkeeper.

Lloris strongly praised his family鈥檚 LA experience 鈥 with one caveat.

鈥淗ugo only said the traffic is bad,鈥 Son said with a grin. 鈥淏ut I know London, the traffic is also quite bad. The traffic I can deal with, no problem. I just have to leave 10 minutes earlier. I鈥檓 experienced, you know?鈥

Son joins a lengthy list of football stars from European leagues who moved to Hollywood for their second act. Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini and Olivier Giroud have all suited up for LAFC, while the crosstown rival LA Galaxy have welcomed even more European superstars, including David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robbie Keane and Marco Reus.

Son did not appear to be in significant decline during the past season as Tottenham鈥檚 captain, and he said he is in good game shape after participating in Spurs鈥 summer tour of Asia. He did not set a date for his LAFC debut, but it is likely to be this month on the road, since LAFC doesn鈥檛 have another home match until Aug. 31.

鈥淚 just felt like I need a new chapter, I need a new challenge, and I choose LAFC,鈥 Son said. 鈥淚 think we can say I鈥檓 old, but I still have a good physicality, good legs, and still have a good quality. I鈥檓 here to perform, but also I want to give some advice to the young players for improvement. That鈥檚 why we are here.鈥

Son鈥檚 introductory news conference was attended by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, South Korea鈥檚 consul general, dozens of Korean journalists and dozens of drum-beating, singing fans from the LAFC supporters鈥 group famous for its relentless, raucous noise during matches.

鈥淥n behalf of millions of Angelenos and football fans around the world 鈥 Sonny, welcome to Los Angeles,鈥 Bass said. 鈥淭his is a moment that will be remembered in the city for generations to come.鈥

Son already got a taste of LAFC fans鈥 passion Tuesday when he attended the club鈥檚 Leagues Cup victory over Tigres, saying he was overwhelmed by the energy in BMO Stadium even for a non-MLS match played largely by LAFC鈥檚 second stringers.

鈥淵esterday I was in the game watching you guys supporting like crazy,鈥 Son said. 鈥淚t was insane. I just wanted to run onto the pitch and show you guys my performance.鈥

  • The 21-year-old outfielder, who has 159 major league at-bats so far, is signed through 2033, with a team option for 2034
  • Anthony鈥檚 nine-figure deal, which includes a $30 million team option for 2034, buys out his five or six years of team control, and at least two seasons of free agency

BOSTON: The Red Sox signed rookie phenom Roman Anthony to an eight-year, $130 million contract on Wednesday, spending some of the cash they saved by trading Rafael Devers away on a player they hope will be the centerpiece of the next generation of Boston stars.

The 21-year-old outfielder, who has 159 major league at-bats so far, is signed through 2033, with a team option for 2034. The deal was announced with the Red Sox on a seven-game winning streak heading into Wednesday night鈥檚 game against the Kansas City Royals.

鈥淲e鈥檙e playing such great baseball. I didn鈥檛 want to be a distraction to anyone,鈥 Anthony said in a pregame news conference attended by his parents and sister and teammates along with members of the ballclub鈥檚 ownership, front office and coaching staff. 鈥淏ut I knew that this is where I wanted to be, and I鈥檓 having a blast. And I just wanted to continue that.鈥

Anthony is batting .283 with two homers and 19 RBIs in 46 games since making his debut in June. The team is 32-16 since his call-up, including a 10-game winning streak heading into the All-Star break and seven straight wins when he signed his deal.

鈥淭his is a guy who was the No. 1 prospect in the sport. We鈥檝e seen the impact that he鈥檚 had on our major league team in just over 150 at-bats,鈥 Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow said. 鈥淎nd so when we think about the future of this organization, there鈥檚 no question that it got brighter today.鈥

Anthony鈥檚 nine-figure deal, which includes a $30 million team option for 2034, buys out his five or six years of team control, and at least two seasons of free agency. He could still become a free agent at 30.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know what the future holds, but I believe that I will be the best version of myself every single day,鈥 said Anthony, who received a big cheer when he came to the plate in the first inning. 鈥淚t was a deal that was obviously more than enough for me and for my family and at a place that I want to be in.鈥

The Red Sox have struggled to hold onto their homegrown stars lately, trading away 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts when they couldn鈥檛 sign him and then watching Xander Bogaerts leave as a free agent. The team appeared to break the trend when it signed Rafael Devers to a 10-year, $313 million deal in 2023; instead, it traded him away this season when he refused to change fielding positions.

The roster churn has led to just one postseason appearance in the past six years, as well as a feeling among fans that the team isn鈥檛 willing to spend what it takes to compete for championships.

鈥淵es, in the past when we haven鈥檛 signed homegrown players, it鈥檚 hurt,鈥 team president Sam Kennedy said.

But Anthony now joins pitcher Brayan Bello, outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela and infielder Kristian Campbell as a future core signed to long-term deals. Pitcher Garrett Crochet, who was acquired in a trade, was also signed to an extension that would keep him in Boston until 2031.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a special group,鈥 Anthony said. 鈥淚 try not to look too far into the future, but we鈥檙e having a lot of fun and playing good baseball right now. It鈥檚 super exciting when we talk about how young we are and the mix that we have of the great veteran guys that we have. So there鈥檚 a lot to be excited about.鈥

Kennedy acknowledged that the unsteady roster has been difficult on fans, who buy their favorite players鈥 jerseys only to watch them leave.

鈥淚t鈥檚 OK to fall in love with our stars, and recognizing that a lot of these guys will be around for a long time,鈥 Kennedy said.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not done yet, but it鈥檚 headed in the right direction. And signing our homegrown, young, talented guys is a huge part of that,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 been the key piece of having success in our time here is locking up our homegrown talent who want to be here.鈥

MONTREAL: Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko rallied to reach the National Bank Open final, beating ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old Mboko dropped to the court after Rybakina鈥檚 shot sailed long on match point as the crowd 鈥 lined with 鈥淎llez Vicky鈥 鈥 erupted. Mboko saved a match point in the third set and broke Rybakina twice to force the tiebreaker.

鈥淚ncredible match, thank you to everyone for supporting me,鈥 Mboko told the crowd in French. 鈥淚t was really difficult, but anything can happen.鈥

On Thursday night, she鈥檒l face Japanese star Naomi Osaka, a 6-2, 7-6 (7) winner over 16th-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark in the second semifinal.

Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, is seeking her first WTA Tour title and trying to join Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019) as the only Canadians to win the home event in the open era.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Congolese parents, Mboko grew up in Toronto. She upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals, then topped Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 on Monday. Mboko overcame 11 double-faults and battled through a wrist injury after stumbling awkwardly to the ground in the second game of the third set. She鈥檒l will move up to at least 34th in the world after starting the year outside the top 300.

Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion who reached No. 1 in the world, continued her best performance in a WTA 1000 tournament since reaching the Miami final in 2022. She stepped for 15 months toward the end of that season and had daughter Shai in July 2023. She鈥檚 seeking her eighth title and her first since the 2021 Australian Open.

Liverpool set to cut losses with Nunez move to Saudi: reports
  • Nunez joined the Reds for an initial $87m from Benfica three years ago
  • According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Al-Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly closing in on a move to Saudi club Al-Hilal, which could allow the Premier League champions to make a fresh bid for Newcastle鈥檚 Alexander Isak.

Nunez joined the Reds for an initial 75 million euros ($87 million, 拢65 million) from Benfica three years ago but has failed to live up to that price tag.

The Uruguayan has scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but slipped down the pecking order at Anfield under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Al-Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old.

Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree that also includes full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

However, the club could still break the British transfer record by signing Isak, with Newcastle reportedly demanding a fee of up to 拢150 million for the Swedish striker.

The sale of Nunez would take Liverpool鈥檚 income for transfer sales this window to nearly 200 million euros after the departures of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton.

Harvey Elliott is also attracting interest from RB Leipzig, with Liverpool wanting at least 45 million euros for the England midfielder.

Nunez would become the latest big name to join Al-Hilal, who shocked Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the recent Club World Cup.

Coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, the Saudi club鈥檚 squad includes Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
