Chances of Alonso staying in Leverkusen ‘50-50’, says CEO
  • Carro told reporters that “my gut feeling is that it’s 50-50” Alonso would stay
  • “If a team he has played for comes, we would sit down and discuss it and we wouldn’t stand in his way”

MADRID: Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro said Monday the club had a 50-50 chance of holding onto manager Xabi Alonso amid rumored links between the coach and Real Madrid.
Carro also revealed the club had a “gentlemen’s agreement” with Alonso, allowing him to leave to coach one of the clubs he played for as a player for a fee.
Alonso, who played for Real and last year took Leverkusen to an unbeaten league and cup double, has been linked with the top job at the Bernabeu, with current coach Carlo Ancelotti rumored to be headed for the exit.
Speaking ahead of the Laureus Sports Awards, where the club is nominated for breakthrough of the year after their debut Bundesliga win last season, Carro told reporters that “my gut feeling is that it’s 50-50” Alonso would stay.
“Xabi has no exit clause, but we have a gentleman’s agreement. If a team he has played for comes, we would sit down and discuss it and we wouldn’t stand in his way,” he said.
Carro said the club “needs clarity” and “the decision needs to be in the next three or four weeks. We cannot wait until the end of the season.”
“We are not naive, the position of the coach is very important for a club and it is true that we are preparing for next season with him.
“We have worked with him every day; he is fully committed to this preparation.”
After winning the title last season, Leverkusen have fallen back slightly and sit eight points behind league leaders Bayern Munich with four games remaining.
Leverkusen were eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern and were knocked out in the semifinals of the German Cup by third-division Arminia Bielefeld
Despite the drop off, the club is still on track for its second best points total.
Carro also said he believed star midfielder Florian Wirtz, 21, “has a contract until 2027 and I believe he will play for us next year.”

Formula 1 extends Azerbaijan Grand Prix contract through 2030
  • The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to stay on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2030 after receiving a four-year contract extension
  • The contract for the street circuit on the Baku seafront had been due to expire after next year’s race

BAKU: The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to stay on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2030 after receiving a four-year contract extension Saturday.
The contract for the street circuit on the Baku seafront had been due to expire after next year’s race.
Azerbaijan was widely considered a surprise choice of host ahead of its first race in 2016 but has become known for unpredictable racing, with Sergio Perez the only driver to win there more than once.
“The circuit is unique, with technical sections and long straights that run through the stunning shoreline and historic old town, delivering an eventful and entertaining race every year,” F1 president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
“This renewal reflects the strong trust and commitment between Formula 1, the Azerbaijani government, and the promoter, and paves the way for an exciting future in the country.”
This year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place Sunday.

‘Switch off your phones and sleep’, India captain tells team before Pakistan clash
  • India prevailed in the Group A match last week but their players refused to shake hands with Pakistan opponents after the match
  • Pakistan considered withdrawing from the tournament to protest against the match referee, who they say condoned India’s behavior

DUBAI: India’s players need to block out the noise as they prepare to again face rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup amid controversy over their previous clash, skipper Suryakumar Yadav said on Saturday.

The eight-team tournament has been dominated by headlines about India and Pakistan’s first meetings on the pitch since the military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May this year.

India prevailed in the politically-charged Group A match last week but their players refused to shake hands with their Pakistan opponents after the match.

Suryakumar dedicated India’s seven-wicket victory to their armed forces, while several of his teammates took to social media to express similar thoughts.

Pakistan considered withdrawing from the tournament to protest against the match referee, who they say condoned unsportsmanlike behavior by India, before going ahead with their match against the United Arab Emirates.

With the controversy likely to rumble on in the build-up to Sunday’s clash, Suryakumar offered some blunt advice for teammates struggling to cope with external pressure.

“Close your room, switch off your phone and sleep. I think that’s the best. It’s easy to say, but sometimes it is difficult,” he told reporters.

“It’s on you, what you want to listen to, what you want to have in your mind ...

“I have been very clear with all the boys. I think it’s very important if you want to do well in this tournament and going forward. We will have to shut a lot of noise from outside and take what is good for you.”

Despite India’s triumph in their previous encounter, Suryakumar insisted past results would count for nothing when the rivals meet again in the super four match.

“I feel our preparation has been really good leading into the tournament. We have also had three good games, so we are actually focusing on what we can do best,” he added.

“We want to follow all the good habits that we have been doing from the last two or three games. We take it one game at a time. It doesn’t give us an edge that we have played them once and we had a good game. We have to start from scratch.”

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool’s top two summer signings, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, were on the bench for Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton.

Hugo Ekitike started in place of Isak, who joined Liverpool in a deadline-day transfer from Newcastle. Alexis Mac Allister was in for Wirtz, who is scoreless for Liverpool this season after joining from Bayer Leverkusen.
Left back Milos Kerkez started in place of Andy Robertson and right back Conor Bradley instead of Jeremie Frimpong.

Inzaghi rues late collapse as Al-Hilal let 3–0 lead slip against Al-Ahli

JEDDAH: Al-Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi voiced his frustration after his side surrendered a three-goal advantage in Friday’s Saudi Professional League clash with Al-Ahli, which ended in a 3–3 draw.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Inzaghi praised his players’ performance for most of the game but admitted they failed to manage the closing stages.

“We played very well until the 80th minute, scored three goals, hit the post three (times) and Mendy also made several saves,” he said. “Then Toni reduced the deficit with a special technical touch. We didn’t deal with the match properly after that, and I can’t criticize the team because we played 80 excellent minutes.”

The Italian coach rejected suggestions that his substitutions had unsettled the side, explaining that injuries forced his hand. Malcom was substituted, while Ruben Neves, who had not been fully fit, asked to come off after insisting on starting.

Inzaghi also pointed to the short turnaround from the team’s AFC Champions League fixture earlier in the week, saying his players lacked sufficient recovery time.

He added: “The technical level of the match was high, and those who watched it enjoyed it, but I didn’t enjoy it, because my goal was to win.”

Looking ahead, the Al-Hilal boss said the team must quickly learn from the setback. “We have to learn from the match, analyze our mistakes and correct them. But let’s not forget we were facing the Asian Elite and Super Cup champions — not an easy opponent.”
