  • Asia’s 8 top teams will play in centralized location, a controversial shift from home-and-away format
  • Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Jeddah-based Al-Ahli will get the benefit of home nation advantage

AUSTRALIA: All roads lead to Jeddah this week as the top eight teams of this year’s AFC Champions League Elite converge on the coastal city to determine the best club in Asia.

There is a significant shift from the usual home-and-away format that has operated for the past two decades since the AFC Champions League was reformed in the early 2000s.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will all be staged in a centralized location over a two-week period, in a move that has divided opinion in Asian football circles.

With Ƶ confirmed as the host for this new centralized format provisionally until the 2028-29 edition, it grants a massive advantage to the three Saudi Pro League sides that qualify for the tournament each season, should they progress this far.

And given the strength of the competition at the moment, it is hard to see a scenario in which the final eight does not include three SPL sides.

This year the clubs are Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Jeddah-based Al-Ahli, who get the benefit of not just home nation advantage, but home city and home ground as well.

In an ominous sign for the remaining five sides, the three have dominated proceedings this season. In the 30 games played combined, they have won 23, drawn five and lost just two.

If anyone wants to take the trophy away from Ƶ after the next fortnight’s action, they’re going to have their work cut out for them.

But just how well-placed are Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli to be crowned Asian champions this year?

Al-Hilal

Widely considered — especially in their own minds — to be Asia’s biggest club, lifting continental silverware is almost a minimum expectation, which is an almost impossible standard to meet.

And it might prove so this season given their current run of form, having uncharacteristically lost four of their past 10 in all competitions. Such form is tantamount to a full-blown crisis, and yet they remain in the running for both the league and ACL Elite this season.

The return to fitness of Joao Cancelo is a significant boost for Jorge Jesus’ side, with the Portuguese international sidelined since the start of March with a hamstring injury. But getting 26 minutes into his legs off the bench in the 3-0 win over Al-Khaleej is just what the doctor ordered.

Their aura in this competition means they are always a threat and if they can get past South Korea’s Gwangju, a potential clash with Al-Ahli awaits in the semifinals. This would pose a significant challenge having lost 3-2 to Matthias Jaissle’s side last time out.

Al-Ahli

It has been a weird season for Al-Ahli. A slow start in the SPL, with just three wins from their first nine, put them on the back foot from the get-go.

But once they turned their form around they became one of the most in-form teams in the entire competition, even if that was not reflected in their ladder position.

Despite their turnaround in form, however, they have continued to struggle against fellow Big Four teams, with just one win from six against Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad this season.

All the while, in continental competition, they went 7-1-0 in the ACL Elite to look one of the most convincing teams. And backed that up with commanding 3-1 and 2-0 wins over Al-Rayyan in the round of 16.

Perhaps no player epitomizes their persona more than Ivan Toney. Despite bagging 25 goals in all competitions, he does not carry the aura that someone with those numbers ordinarily might. That is Al-Ahli this season. The numbers stack up, but the aura is not quite there.

With home ground advantage over the next two weeks, though, and a first-up clash with Thailand’s Buriram United, they have a chance to achieve something this club has never achieved before.

Al-Nassr

This is the moment for Cristiano Ronaldo to silence the doubters, and there have been plenty since his move to Al-Nassr at the end of 2022.

Firstly Al-Ittihad, and then Al-Hilal, have thwarted his attempts for silverware domestically. And again it looks like they will fall short in that regard this season, especially after their 2-1 loss to Al-Qadsiah last week.

That result left them eight points behind top spot with a dwindling number of games in which to overturn the deficit. But the opportunity to lift continental silverware, with all the reward and prestige that comes with it, remains tantalizingly close.

If they are to do it, Ronaldo will be the man to lead them.

Despite entering his fifth decade on this earth, he shows no signs of slowing down, leading the SPL Golden Boot race with 23 goals, while he has 32 in all competitions this season including seven in the ACL Elite.

If Jhon Duran can find the fire again, with his last goal for Al-Nassr coming over a month ago, they have the firepower to go all the way.

They are facing a Yokohama F. Marinos side in disarray, having just sacked their coach Steve Holland, and sitting bottom of the J. League.

In the quarterfinal they have to be favorites to reach the final from their side of the draw, with a potential semifinal against either Al-Sadd or Kawasaki Frontale.

  • Sadio Mane also on scoresheet in 2-0 victory over Al-Ittihad
  • Al-Ahli secure 2-0 win at Al-Hazm

JEDDAH: Al-Nassr won 2-0 at Al-Ittihad on Friday to move three points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League, thanks to first-half goals from Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Going into the match — the biggest of the season so far — these were the only two teams in the SPL with a 100 percent record, with three wins from three, adding an extra edge to a game that is already one of the biggest in Asia. Now Nassr have four from four and are looking good.

There was a big crowd in Jeddah to roar on the defending champions and while Al-Ittihad started brightly, the Tigers were unable to get on the scoresheet.

Then after nine minutes, Al-Nassr took the lead in some style to stun the home fans. Kingsley Coman chipped the ball in from the right and there was Mane to volley home at the far post, giving goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic no chance.

Both teams continued to have chances, but 10 minutes before the break, Mane crossed from the left for Ronaldo to head home from close range.

From that point on, although Al-Ittihad doubled their efforts, it seemed as if there would be just one winner. Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, came close with a low shot soon after he scored, but despite both teams having chances, the scoreline stayed the same.

In the end, Al-Nassr took the win and are now three points clear at the top of the standings.

Earlier on Friday, Al-Ahli, who suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at home to Pyramids of Egypt in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup on Tuesday, bounced back with a 2-0 win at Al-Hazm.

Firas Al-Buraikan opened the scoring after 72 minutes and Ali Majrashi sealed the win eight minutes later.

This league round is the last before the international break, during which the Ƶ team faces games against Indonesia and Iraq, with a place at the 2026 World Cup up for grabs.

  • 3-1 win leaves the Riyadh team in 4th place in Saudi Pro League standings

RIYADH: Al-Hilal recovered from an early concession to beat Al-Okhdood 3-1 at Kingdom Arena on Matchday 4 of the Saudi Pro League season.

The win on Thursday night leaves Al-Hilal in fourth place with eight points from four matches.

Al-Okhdood shocked the home crowd by taking the lead on 13 minutes when Khaled Narey scored with a stunning volley past Yassine Bounou from a tight angle. The lead could have been doubled on 25 minutes, but Blaz Kramer wasted a presentable chance.

Marcos Leonardo squared the match with a header after Al-Okhdood goalkeeper Samuel Portugal fumbled the ball into his path and it looked like that the teams would go in at the break on level terms. However, three minutes into stoppage time, Theo Hernandez gave Al-Hilal the lead after a wonderful run and finish to send the home crowd into wild celebration.

Nevertheless, Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi would have been far from happy with his team’s overall first-half performance.

The message must have got to the players as Al-Hilal went on the attack after the restart, though a Kalidou Koulibaly effort on 57 minutes was overturned by VAR.

Al-Hilal’s third eventually arrived on 79 minutes, Leonardo grabbing his second of the night from close range after Portugal once again failed to hold onto the ball.

Earlier on Thursday visitors Al-Taawoun beat Al-Khaleej 1-0 to claim third place in the SPL table, while Al-Kholood pulled off the surprise of the day, beating hosts Al-Shabab with a 90th-minute winner from Abdulaziz El-Elawi.

  • Al-Ittihad edge out Al-Wehda, while Al-Najma, Al-Hazem and Al-Zulfi also progress

RIYADH: Al-Nassr progressed to the last 16 of the King Cup with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Jeddah at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium on Tuesday night.

An own goal by defender Faisal Abu Bakr put the visiting Saudi Pro League leaders in front against their Division 1 hosts in the eighth minute, and second-half goals from Wesley, in the 61st minute, Joao Felix (71st) and Mohammed Simakan (89th) sealed a comprehensive win.

Meanwhile, reigning SPL champions Al-Ittihad edged out home side Al-Wehda, with Saleh Al-Shehri scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

In the biggest upset of the day, Division 1 side Al-Zulfi defeated Pro League visitors Al-Fayha 4-3 on penalties, after the match ended goalless.

In the remaining games on Tuesday, Al-Najma beat Damac 2-1, and Al-Hazem overcame Neom by the same score.

  • Cairo club ran out deserved 3-1 winners and will meet a team from South or North America in the next stage
  • DR Congo star Mayale brought down a long ball in the area and then shot the rebound home for his third goal after Mendy had saved his first shot

Fiston Mayele scored a hat-trick as Pyramids of Egypt defeated Al-Ahli 3-1 in the FIFA African-Asian Pacific Cup on Tuesday in Jeddah to move into the next stage of the 2025 FIFA International Cup.

These winners of the Champions Leagues in Asia and Africa played out an entertaining affair, but the club from Cairo ran out deserved winners and will meet a team from South or North America in the next stage with European title-holders Paris Saint-Germain waiting in December’s final.

Just a few days earlier, Al-Ahli came back from 3-0 down against Al-Hilal to draw 3-3 but found the African champions a tougher nut to crack.

The visitors, who had come close earlier, stunned the home fans after 20 minutes. Mayele, top scorer in the CAF Champions League last season, collected possession from Ibrahim Toure just outside the area, made a little space for himself and then sent a low shot arrowing into the bottom corner past Eduardo Mendy.

Just after the half-hour, Al-Ahli came close to the equalizer. First, Enzo Millot had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper but his shot was saved by Ahmed El-Shenawy, and the resultant corner drifted across the face of goal with no green shirt able to connect.

In the 43rd minute, Millot spun away from Osama Galal in the area and was caught by the defender. The referee rightfully pointed to the spot and up stepped Ivan Toney to send the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Pyramids came within a whisker of retaking their lead on the stroke of half-time but Mahmoud Zalaka’s powerful shot from inside the area came back off the post, and there was still time for Abu Al-Shamat to shoot right at El-Shenawy from close range.

Mayele had a second-half goal ruled out for offside just after the hour and within a minute or two, Toney’s close-range header was well-saved. However, the Egyptians retook the lead in the 71st minute thanks to Mayele once more as he turned in a Zalaka cross from the right at the near post.

It was 3-1 soon after as the DR Congo star brought down a long ball in the area and then shot the rebound home after Mendy had saved his first shot.

There was no coming back from that for the Asian champions and the Pyramids advance to the next stage.
