Five things to look out for at the AFC Champions League Elite semi-finals in Jeddah
  • Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli face off in an all-Saudi clash on Tuesday, while Al-Nassr take on Kawasaki Frontale of Japan the following day

LONDON: Three 萝莉视频n teams entered the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League Elite in Jeddah, and all three progressed to the last four. On Tuesday, Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal meet in the first semi-final while, 24 hours later, Al-Nassr take on Kawasaki Frontale of Japan. Here are five things to look out for as the continent鈥檚 premier club competition reaches its climax.

Al-Dawsari the main man for Al-Hilal

The headlines wrote themselves after Al-Hilal thrashed Gwangju FC 7-0 on Friday. A team that had looked uncharacteristically shaky on the home front was suddenly back to doing its favorite thing, winning big in big Asian games.

Coach Jorge Jesus would have been delighted with the fact that all seven goals against the South Koreans were scored by different players. Perhaps the best was Salem Al-Dawsari鈥檚 effort as he moved to nine goals for the tournament so far. That is an incredible effort for a player who is not a striker and is surrounded by players who love nothing more than to get on the scoresheet.

So for all the famous foreign talent, it is a very familiar face that Al-Ahli will have to be wary of on Tuesday. Al-Dawsari is in some of the best form of an exceptional career. He will take some stopping and, on Friday鈥檚 evidence, so will Al-Hilal.

Recent Ahli win means nothing but Firmino on fire

鈥淏ring on Al-Hilal鈥 chanted the Al-Ahli fans as their team defeated Buriram United 3-0 on Saturday.

Understandably so. It was just a few weeks ago that Ivan Toney scored a hat-trick to give the Greens a famous 3-2 win over the Blues in Riyadh. That will give the Jeddah giants confidence but will not actually mean that much when the two teams take the pitch in Jeddah. Beating Al-Hilal once a season is not easy, twice is special.

Yet Al-Hilal will know that they lost to a team without Roberto Firmino because the former Liverpool star is not registered for the Saudi Pro League. The Brazilian took out the frustration of prolonged inactivity on Buriram on Saturday with a top-class display of attacking vision, creativity and no small goal threat.

It has been a mixed season for 鈥淏obby鈥 but if he can down Al-Hilal and take Al-Ahli to a third final and a first title then his status as club legend will be assured.

Al-Nassr look to Ronaldo to make it an all-Saudi final

Al-Nassr made short work of Yokohama F. Marinos, winning 4-1 against the Japanese team. The only downside was the late goal conceded.

To be honest, Stefano Pioli鈥檚 men were not tested too much and swept aside the visitors in waves of attacks in the first half. Jhon Duran scored twice and his cutting edge will be needed in the next game. Yokohama are bottom of the J. League and were poor defensively. Kawasaki Frontale will not be quite as generous.

The pressure is on the Yellows. They have never been Asian champions. If they lose here then the season is almost over given that they are eight points behind an Al-Ittihad team that is resting and recovering while its title rivals are playing in Asia.

The likes of Sadio Mane and Aymeric Laporte have won big prizes but none more so than Cristiano Ronaldo. His experience and leadership will be crucial. Losing at the semi-final stage is always painful but will be especially so with the knowledge that there is a 萝莉视频n rival waiting.

Kawasaki ready to learn from other easterners

The Japanese team have underachieved in Asia in their past 10 appearances but eventually made it to the semi-finals for the first time on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Al-Sadd. After three disappointing results from East Asian teams in the previous two days, it is good for the competition that there is a representative from the other side of the continent.

Kawasaki are up against it. Al-Nassr have had an extra day鈥檚 rest and the Japanese team had to go into extra-time. Al-Nassr have the home support too. Yet all that means there is little pressure on the four-time J. League champions.

In the other three quarterfinals, all the 萝莉视频n teams scored early and the games were soon over. Kawasaki will be determined not to make the same mistakes. If they can keep it tight then the tension and frustration may grow.

It is not the first all-Saudi Champions League semi-final

This is the first time in the tournament鈥檚 history that three teams from one country are in the last four. The Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli semi-final is not, however, the first time that 萝莉视频n teams have met at this stage.

In 2012 there was the Jeddah derby. Al-Ittihad defeated their local rivals Al-Ahli 1-0 thanks to Naif Hazazi. The second leg was at the same Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium. Al-Ittihad were ready to get to another final but ended up losing 2-0. Moataz Al-Mousa scored just before the break and then, as extra-time loomed, Victor Simoes won it for the Greens who then lost 3-0 to Ulsan of South Korea in the final.

In 2021, it was time for the Riyadh derby, a one-legged affair. Moussa Marega put Al-Hilal ahead in the first half. Soon after the restart, Talisca equalized for Al-Nassr and then, with 20 minutes remaining, Salem Al-Dawsari struck to score one of the most famous goals of his career to send the Blues to the final where they went on to win a fourth crown.

He will be looking to do something similar on Tuesday.

Defensive-minded Arsenal out to squash scoring-limited Newcastle United

Defensive-minded Arsenal out to squash scoring-limited Newcastle United
  • 鈥淲e start from our frontline and the amount of pressure and work that they put into any defensive line, any goalkeeper, is tremendous,鈥 Arteta said
  • Newcastle (1-1-3, 6 points) have scored only three goals so far in the league amid the saga that eventually saw Isak move to Liverpool

LONDON: Arsenal will try to continue their strong defensive record on Sunday when they visit a Newcastle United side still struggling to score goals since the departure of Alexander Isak.
Arsenal (3-1-1, 10 points) have allowed just two scores so far in league play. And Manchester City鈥檚 Erling Haaland became the first and so far, only Premier League player to score against Arsenal from open play in the ninth minute of last weekend鈥檚 1-1 draw.
Manager Mikel Arteta says the club鈥檚 stinginess is a credit not only to his rearguard, but to the approach of all 11 players on the field.
鈥淲e start from our frontline and the amount of pressure and work that they put into any defensive line, any goalkeeper, is tremendous,鈥 Arteta said. 鈥淪o, it鈥檚 something collective, it鈥檚 a team sport and in anything that we do, everybody has a pivotal role in that.鈥
Even so, the Gunners still find themselves five points back of Liverpool and already managing injuries to several key players.
However, Arteta said attacker Bukayo Saka should be fit for Sunday鈥檚 clash and that his removal following a heavy challenge in Wednesday鈥檚 2-0 League Cup win vs. Port Vale was planned.
Newcastle (1-1-3, 6 points) have scored only three goals so far in the league amid the saga that eventually saw Isak move to Liverpool for a reported fee of $170 million.
The Magpies moved for Stuttgart鈥檚 23-year-old Nick Woltemade as a replacement at the transfer deadline. He鈥檚 scored once so far in two league appearances after he had 12 goals in a breakthrough Bundesliga campaign.
That said, Newcastle have won their last three against Arsenal at St. James鈥 Park, including the second leg of last year鈥檚 Leagues Cup semifinal en route to the club鈥檚 first major honor in 70 years.
And they鈥檝e been very competitive so far in two home matches against global footballing powers, a 3-2 league loss to Liverpool in the second game of the Premier League season, and a 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to FC Barcelona on Sept. 18.
鈥淚t has always been a competitive game against Arsenal, and there has been an edge to those games as both teams want to win,鈥 said Magpies manager Eddie Howe. 鈥淭he more competitive we are, the better we play. We need to bring that to the game on Sunday.鈥

Pakistan seek revenge against India in Asia Cup final in Dubai
  • India survive a scare in Friday鈥檚 dead rubber when they edge out Sri Lanka via Super Over

DUBAI: Pakistan will be gunning for revenge but an unbeaten India look firm favorites to retain the Asia Cup title when the arch-rivals clash in a potentially testy final in Dubai on Sunday.

The Indian juggernaut has crushed every opposition on their path before swaggering into the final of the eight-team tournament looking every inch the reigning 20-over world champions.

Pakistan were swatted aside twice, first in the group stage and then in Super Fours, by an India team containing the world鈥檚 top-ranked batter and bowler in the T20 format in opener Abhishek Sharma and spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

Six-hitting machine Abhishek is also the tournament鈥檚 leading scorer with 309 runs from six innings, often setting the tone of India鈥檚 batting in the first six powerplay overs.

In a low-scoring tournament where only Pathum Nissanka of Sri Lanka managed a century, Abhishek鈥檚 red-hot form at the top meant skipper Suryakumar Yadav鈥檚 struggle with the bat has not really been felt.

Wily seamer Jasprit Bumrah has helped India control the powerplay overs with the ball but left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been their wrecker-in-chief leading the bowlers鈥 chart with 13 wickets.

Fellow spinners Axar Patel and Chakravarthy have also kept it tight in the middle overs and the slew of all-rounders at his disposal has left Suryakumar practically spoilt for bowling choices.

Sparks flew and tempers frayed both times India and Pakistan met in what is their first tournament since a military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May.

India survived a scare in Friday鈥檚 dead rubber when they edged out Sri Lanka via Super Over, which should shake off any complacency that might have crept into their campaign.

鈥(I got) what I wanted from the boys 鈥 just to try and execute their plans, be clear and not to fear,鈥 Suryakumar said of their flawless campaign heading into the final.

鈥淭hat was really important and I am sure everyone got what they wanted. Happy to be in the final.鈥

Pakistan will naturally be motivated to avoid a third defeat to the arch-rivals in a single tournament and will take heart from their narrow victory in Thursday鈥檚 virtual semifinal against Bangladesh.

鈥淰ery excited,鈥 Pakistan captain Salman Agha said of the final against India.

鈥淲e know what we need to do, and we are a good enough team to beat anyone, and we will come on Sunday and try to beat them.鈥

Liverpool 鈥榙eserved鈥 defeat to Crystal Palace, says Slot
  • Ismaila Sarr鈥檚 ninth-minute opener was scant reward for a dominant first half from Palace
  • 鈥淚f one team deserved to win today it was Palace,鈥 said Slot

LONDON: Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Crystal Palace were deserving 2-1 winners as the Premier League champions鈥 perfect start to the season came to an abrupt end at Selhurst Park.
Slot鈥檚 men had won all seven of their Premier League, Champions League and League Cup games since losing on penalties to Palace in the Community Shield last month.
However, a new-look Liverpool, overhauled by a near 拢450 million ($602 million) spend in the transfer market, have flirted with failure only to be bailed out by a series of late goals.
Ismaila Sarr鈥檚 ninth-minute opener was scant reward for a dominant first half from Palace as only a string of saves from Alisson Becker kept the visitors in the game.
It looked like Liverpool might escape south London with a point after Federico Chiesa levelled with another late goal.
But this time the Reds were undone in stoppage time when Eddie Nketiah smashed in.
鈥淚f one team deserved to win today it was Palace,鈥 said Slot.
鈥淐redit to Palace 鈥 with the Community Shield it鈥檚 not the first time we鈥檝e lost to them.
鈥淭hey deserved to be two or three up in the first half.鈥
Including the Community Shield, Liverpool have conceded two goals in five of their nine games this season.
Slot was particularly angered by his side鈥檚 defending for the winner when Jeremie Frimpong switched off to leave Nketiah unmarked at the back post.
鈥淲e can only blame ourselves for defending the way we did,鈥 said Slot.
鈥淥ne of our players ran out because he wanted to play a counter-attack, which was of no use because time was up, so it was only about defending.
鈥淥ne player was too offensively minded in that moment, which led to them scoring the winner and us losing the game.鈥
Palace are the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League.
Stretching back to before their FA Cup win last season, the Eagles have not lost in 18 games in all competitions.
鈥淭hese are the moments why we love football. The fans will have a great Saturday evening now,鈥 said Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
鈥淲e deserved it. Great performance, great game, great win.鈥
Glasner has transformed Palace鈥檚 fortunes over the past 18 months, but believes his side鈥檚 first-half display was a new high.
鈥淚 think the first half was the best half since we arrived,鈥 he said.
鈥淟eading the champions by one goal you always think they can strike back and we were under immense pressure in the second half.
鈥淏ut even when they equalized and the momentum can change we kept our heads. It was such a team effort.鈥

Esteve scores two own goals, Haaland nets twice as Burnley lose 5-1 at Man City
  • 鈥淚t was a difficult game but we controlled it better in the second half. It was a good victory,鈥 said Matheus Nunes, who scored City鈥檚 second goal
  • City took an early lead when Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka palmed away Jeremy Doku鈥檚 shot

MANCHESTER: Two own goals by Maxime Esteve ended Burnley鈥檚 hopes of fighting back as Manchester City cruised to a 5-1 Premier League win on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring a late brace.
City鈥檚 third win in the campaign took them to 10 points from six matches, reducing the gap with champions Liverpool to five points, after the leaders lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace.
鈥淚t was a difficult game but we controlled it better in the second half. It was a good victory,鈥 said Matheus Nunes, who scored City鈥檚 second goal.
鈥淲e鈥檙e still trying to reach the level we used to be with control in every game. We want to win every game but sometimes it isn鈥檛 easy. We鈥檒l get there.鈥
City took an early lead when Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka palmed away Jeremy Doku鈥檚 shot but it rebounded toward Phil Foden, and Esteve鈥檚 hurried attempt to clear the danger went into the net instead.
The hosts dominated possession and subdued the Burnley attack, with the visitors unable to make an attempt to score until the 23rd minute, when Kyle Walker tried his luck with a long shot.
Dubravka deflected Nico Gonzalez鈥檚 shot for a corner and punched away Foden鈥檚 free kick to keep Burnley in the game, as a dominant City looked to double their lead.
But Burnley鈥檚 very first shot on target found the equalizer in the 38th minute, when Jaidon Anthony played a one-two with Quilindschy Hartman and fired with his left foot inside the box. The ball took a deflection off Ruben Dias and hopped into the net.

HAALAND SHINES IN THE SECOND HALF
Anthony鈥檚 fourth goal of the season reinvigorated Burnley and the visitors pushed for a second goal after the break, with Hartman鈥檚 shot testing City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
But City regained the lead in the 61st minute when Haaland, who had a quiet first half as he returned from a back injury, leapt to head down a cross for Nunes to finish from close range.
Esteve鈥檚 second own goal came four minutes later, as substitute Oscar Bobb鈥檚 shot hit the French defender before going in near the far post, giving City a comfortable 3-1 lead.
Dubravka kept out shots from Tijjani Reijnders and Doku as City piled on the pressure, but he could not deny Haaland when the Norwegian forward found the net from Doku鈥檚 pass.
Haaland scored again in added time as a mix-up between defenders Esteve and Hjalmar Ekdal allowed the league鈥檚 leading scorer to break through toward goal and slot in his eighth goal in the campaign, sealing a 5-1 win for City.
City manager Pep Guardiola said he was happy with his team鈥檚 performance in the second half in the absence of midfielder Rodri, who missed the game due to an injury.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know right now how the pain is in his knee. He said to us that he was not ready to play,鈥 Guardiola told the BBC.
Burnley鈥檚 third loss in the last four games left them struggling at 17th in the table, with only four points.
City, who visit AS Monaco for a Champions League clash on Wednesday, will continue their English top-flight campaign at Brentford on October 5, the same day Burnley visit Aston Villa.

Handshake spat bad for cricket, says Pakistan captain ahead of India final in Dubai

Handshake spat bad for cricket, says Pakistan captain ahead of India final in Dubai
  • India skipped handshakes with Pakistan twice, fueling tensions after a recent military conflict
  • Salman Agha says players may show aggression but must avoid disrespecting their opponents

DUBAI: Pakistan captain Salman Agha condemned India鈥檚 refusal to shake hands with their arch-rivals, calling it 鈥渘ot good for cricket鈥 before Sunday鈥檚 high-stakes Asia Cup final in Dubai.

Political tension and on-field friction have stalked the teams at the regional tournament following a deadly military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May.

India angered Pakistan by not shaking hands in either of the first two meetings between the teams in the UAE. Unbeaten India won comfortably in the group stage and did so again in the Super Four round.

The tension increased when players exchanged words during last Sunday鈥檚 clash, with India filing an official complaint over gestures made by Pakistan duo Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan.

Agha said the lack of handshakes had left him perplexed.

鈥淚 have been playing competitive cricket since 2007 and have never seen a game go without a handshake,鈥 Agha said on Saturday, speaking for the first time on the controversy.

鈥淚t is not good for cricket. Even in worst times between Pakistan and India, players have shaken hands. My father is a great fan of cricket, and he never told me that such a thing happened.鈥

Agha said players must be careful not to cross the line when it comes to discipline.

鈥淚 think every individual has his own style. If someone wants to be aggressive on the ground, then why not. If you control the aggression of a fast bowler, then nothing is left.

鈥淓very player knows how to deal with his emotions. I give free hand to my players to react on the ground unless he is disrespecting other players and the country.鈥

The Pakistan skipper said his team will follow the protocols for a captains鈥 photo shoot with the trophy on Sunday, which India is likely to boycott.

鈥淭hey do what they want to do,鈥 said Agha. 鈥淲e will do what is in our protocol. Rest is up to them, if they want to come for that it鈥檚 up to them. If they do not want to come, don鈥檛 come.鈥

India have won all six of their matches at the tournament and are heavy favorites going into the final. They have not lost to Pakistan in seven white-ball matches dating back to 2022.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a final so there will be the same amount of pressure on both the teams,鈥 said Agha. 鈥淚 think the pressure of the final is different. We will try our best to win this.鈥
