Murdered Saudi student lawsuit against Airbnb now in federal court
  • Airbnb age policy led to Alwaleed Algheraibi鈥檚 death, lawyer tells Arab News
  • Convicted killer Nicole Marie Rodgers was 19 at time of Algheraibi鈥檚 murder

CHICAGO: A lawsuit filed in the Philadelphia courts against Airbnb Inc. by the parents of murdered 萝莉视频 student Alwaleed Algheraibi, 25, has been moved to the US federal courts, the family鈥檚 attorney confirmed on Thursday.

The case was recently removed at the request of Airbnb from the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas (Pennsylvania State Court) to Federal Court in Philadelphia, also known as the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Attorney Steve Harvey explained that the defendant has a right to be in federal court based on the citizenship of the parties 鈥 Algheraibi was a Saudi citizen, while his killer, Nicole Marie Rodgers, is African American.

The state lawsuit was filed on May 16, 2025, in the Philadelphia local courts by the victim鈥檚 father and mother, Abdullah and Eiman Algheraibi, who live in Riyadh. Airbnb is based in San Francisco, California.

The lawsuit alleges that a decision by Airbnb in October 2020 to change its policies to allow individuals younger than 21 to rent properties, created the circumstances in which the murder took place.

Rodgers was only 19 years of age when she rented the property, even though the property owner complained to Airbnb at the time that she did not want to rent to someone under the age of 21.

Had the policy not changed, Harvey argues in the lawsuit, Algheraibi would still be alive because the property owner would not have rented it to Rodgers.

鈥淭he parents of Alwaleed Algheraibi are suing Airbnb because they believe Airbnb should be held responsible for sending an Airbnb customer, 19-year-old Nicole Rodgers, to the house in Philadelphia where she brutally murdered their son for no apparent reason,鈥 Harvey told Arab News.

鈥淚f it had not been for the Airbnb policy of forcing its hosts to accept guests under the age of 21, Alwaleed would be alive today. It was unreasonable for Airbnb to force the host to accept Rodgers.

鈥淎irbnb knew or should have known that forcing hosts to accept guests as young as 18 could lead to problems, even serious problems like crime, violent crime, and even murder, not in every case or even in most cases but in some cases. This policy led to the death of an innocent young man.鈥

According to the lawsuit, the property owner previously had one of her properties damaged by an 18-year-old Airbnb guest. In response, the owner told Airbnb that she did not want to host anyone under age 21, Harvey said.

鈥淪he was told that based on the discrimination policy of the platform that if she were to ask guests their age or choose not to host them based on age then they could flag her (the owner) for discrimination and remove her from the platform,鈥 the lawsuit states.

The property in question, a house, is located at 347 W. Hansberry Street in Philadelphia. Guests could stay in one of several individual rooms in the home and share common areas such as a bathroom.

Algheraibi 鈥渨as not staying in the property through Airbnb, but instead was staying through an arrangement with the property manager, Gardith Edouard, a longtime Airbnb 鈥榟ost,鈥欌 the lawsuit states.

The killer, Rodgers, was staying in the property through an Airbnb booking on the third floor, while Algheraibi鈥檚 room was on the first floor.

Harvey said Algheraibi was in the US to get a degree in computer engineering from Chestnut Hill College, and was finishing his studies when he was murdered by Rodgers.

鈥淎lwaleed was engaged to be married, and was looking forward to returning home to be with his fiance and his family. His family was expecting Alwaleed to come home in the coming months, but instead never saw him alive again.

鈥淭hey suffer deep, even indescribable, anguish at the loss of their son in such a brutal, senseless, and avoidable, killing,鈥 Harvey said.

鈥淭he evidence suggests that the killer lured Alwaleed to her third floor of the house on the pretense that she needed his help moving something out of her room. It鈥檚 a tragic irony that this young man died because he had the kindness to lend a hand to a stranger.鈥

Rodgers was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to 15 to 40 years in prison for the murder.

Airbnb did not respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

Airbnb is one of the world鈥檚 largest property renters, with more than 8 million active listings worldwide, according to its website.

Rising tourist appeal for Al-Jawf鈥檚 ancient heritage sites

AL-JAWF: Visitor numbers have surged at archaeological destinations throughout Al-Jawf, with travelers and cultural enthusiasts discovering the monuments that chronicle human civilization and 萝莉视频鈥檚 heritage.

Among the key sites is Sisra Well in Sakaka, which represents Nabatean engineering prowess. Hand-carved into solid rock between the first centuries B.C. and A.D., the 15-meter-deep structure incorporates an eastern aperture that channels water to agricultural lands through an intricate irrigation system.

Further south, the Rajajil Columns near Qara captivate researchers and archaeology aficionados alike with their 6,500-year heritage. This ancient site encompasses 50 distinct groupings of sandstone monoliths, each up to 3 meters high. Locals coined the site鈥檚 name from the columns鈥 resemblance to human figures when viewed from a distance.

The Camel Rock Art site, east of Sakaka, holds global significance as a rare collection of life-size animal sculptures. There are some 21 stone carvings, 17 of which depict camels from the period 5,600-5,200 B.C. This concentration of prehistoric artwork ranks among the earliest-documented sculptural achievements.

The Heritage Commission spearheads efforts to elevate these sites鈥 profile through targeted education initiatives and hands-on experiences. It maintains comprehensive programs for site preservation, development and international promotion, strengthening their cultural impact while stimulating regional economic growth, in line with Saudi Vision 2030鈥檚 commitment to safeguarding and internationally promoting the Kingdom鈥檚 cultural legacy.

Can Riyadh鈥檚 hotel boom set a global standard for sustainability?

Can Riyadh鈥檚 hotel boom set a global standard for sustainability?
  • Mud-brick hotels and regenerative agriculture combine ancient techniques with sustainability

RIYADH: Against a skyline dotted with construction cranes, Riyadh is racing to add 360,000 new hotel rooms by 2030 鈥 a $1 trillion push aimed at cementing 萝莉视频鈥檚 place as a global tourism hub.

This rapid expansion raises a critical question: Can desert hospitality lead the world in sustainable innovation while advancing the Kingdom鈥檚 Vision 2030 and net-zero 2060 goals?

The operational blueprint is unfolding at King Abdullah Financial District, where over 40 LEED Silver or Gold-certified buildings achieve 10鈥15 percent energy savings through high-efficiency appliances and smart climate control.

These structures recycle wastewater using advanced treatment systems, supporting Riyadh鈥檚 city-wide goal to reuse 100 percent of treated water for irrigation and greening 鈥 mirroring capabilities at facilities like the Manfouha plant.

Abdulrazaq Alreshaidan, an expert on sustainability and safety issues, emphasized to Arab News the comprehensive nature of this evolution:

鈥淧rogressive developers now integrate carbon accounting from initial excavation through decades of operations while implementing sophisticated water conservation systems and advanced waste management techniques across all project phases,鈥 he said.

Riyadh鈥檚 hospitality expansion is tightly interwoven with the city鈥檚 sustainability strategy, forming a unified framework for ecological transformation.

The blueprint sets ambitious targets: a 50 percent citywide reduction in carbon emissions, driven by energy-efficient building codes and renewable energy adoption in the tourism sector. Hotels are also expected to achieve a 94 percent waste recycling and conversion rate by redirecting food and packaging waste into circular systems, cut water consumption by 57 percent through advanced conservation mandates, and lower urban temperatures by 1.5掳C鈥2掳C via strategically expanded native green corridors irrigated with recycled water.

Addressing extreme water scarcity remains paramount. At Shebara along the Red Sea coast, 73 prefabricated villas operate with near-zero marine impact through solar-powered reverse-osmosis desalination that meets 100 percent of freshwater needs, while enforcing strict circular economy protocols that eliminate single-use plastics through reusable container partnerships with local suppliers.

Similarly, Dar Tantora in AlUla features 30 mud-brick guest rooms using ancient thermal-mass principles for natural temperature regulation, alongside a zero-waste restaurant initiative that trains regional farmers in precision-drip irrigation and regenerative agriculture to rebuild topsoil season after season.

鈥淟eading properties now implement intuitive material reuse stations with multilingual signage,鈥 said Alreshaidan. He highlighted hotels like The Valley Resort, which transform 12 tonnes of monthly organic waste into nutrient-dense compost for extensive native-species gardens 鈥 creating on-site closed-loop ecosystems.

Energy innovation is also taking center stage. Six Senses Southern Dunes 鈥 萝莉视频鈥檚 first off-grid LEED Platinum property 鈥 runs entirely on photovoltaic arrays with battery storage, while Desert Rock Resort uses subterranean geothermal engineering to cut conventional cooling needs by over 40 percent.

鈥淰isionary developers actively pursue certifications like LEED because they understand these credentials validate operational excellence while strengthening brand reputation and investor confidence quantifiably,鈥 Alreshaidan said.

He added that material sourcing remains a challenge: 鈥淵ou might notice some sustainable materials are higher in price than others.鈥 Many hotels accept these higher costs as 鈥渓ong-term investment rather than short-term cost.鈥

The Saudi Investment Recycling Co., a Public Investment Fund subsidiary, develops and operates recycling infrastructure across all waste types. Alreshaidan emphasized material sustainability: 鈥淐ompanies like SIRC guide others to utilize recycled materials and waste from construction is utilized where materials came 100 percent from recycled sources.鈥

He specifically spotlighted SIRC鈥檚 conversion of demolition debris into certified concrete aggregates used in landmark projects.

FASTFACT

Did You Know?

Riyadh plans to add 360,000 new hotel rooms by 2030.

Some hotels run entirely off-grid using solar power and battery storage.

Hotels like The Valley Resort turn 12 tonnes of organic waste each month into compost.

Verification gaps present another complexity: 鈥淭he absence of Saudi and GCC-authorized accreditation bodies for auditing recycled content percentages creates vulnerability to greenwashing claims without standardized chain-of-custody documentation,鈥 said Alreshaidan.

With LEED Silver certification now mandatory for major developments, Riyadh鈥檚 hotel construction wave is creating 360,000 real-world laboratories for sustainable innovation.

As Expo 2030 approaches, transformative solutions 鈥 from AI-managed water recovery networks to SIRC鈥檚 circular economy platforms 鈥 position 萝莉视频 to lead global sustainability standards tailored for hyper-arid regions.

萝莉视频 is fundamentally reimagining how environmental resilience is embedded in every operational variable. Alreshaidan concluded optimistically: 鈥淐omprehensive solutions are materializing precisely where most critically needed to harmonize growth with planetary stewardship.鈥

Heritage of date preservation continues in Al-Jouf

RIYADH: Among the many inherited traditional social practices in the Al-Jouf region is the custom of 鈥渟tuffing鈥 dates.

Fresh dates harvested in the summer are preserved in a way that ensures they can be stored safely and eaten throughout the winter.

Despite developing agricultural production techniques that are used in modern factories, families in the region hold to this ancient tradition.

Ahmed Al-Arfaj and his family carry out the process of stuffing and preserving their farm鈥檚 date harvest every year and he is keen to teach it to his children 鈥 who will pass it on to future generations in turn.

They rely on the production of Hilwah Al-Jouf dates, he explained, with the start of the process being what is known as 鈥淎l-Laqat鈥 (picking) or 鈥淎l-Haddad鈥 (harvesting). The dates are then dried under the sun鈥檚 rays to ensure all the moisture evaporates.

The next stage is 鈥淎l-Taqmi鈥樷 (sorting), where the pits are extracted and any unsuitable dates removed. They are then packed into containers and tightly sealed; a modern technique, as previously large clay vessels called 鈥淎l-Khawabi鈥 were used for storage.

Al-Arfaj added the custom was known locally as 鈥淎l-Maknuz鈥 (preserving). It is used to produce date molasses and 鈥淎l-Mujarrash鈥 (processed) dates in which the sugars have crystallized, giving them a unique taste and flavor.

The Al-Jouf region celebrates its production with the annual date festival held in Dumat Al-Jandal. As well as highlighting the various types of dates, the event serves as an important marketing tool.

Analysts hail Saudi-Pakistan defense pact as step toward regional stability

KARACHI: 萝莉视频 and Pakistan signed a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement on Wednesday, pledging that aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both, in what experts described as a landmark move that reflects shifting global alignments and decades of close cooperation between the two allies.

The accord was concluded in Riyadh during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif鈥檚 meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Sharing a copy of the joint statement on X early on Thursday, Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman described the two nations as 鈥淥ne front against any aggressor ... Always
and forever.鈥
Pakistani analysts meanwhile said the agreement underscored both countries鈥 intent to formalize longstanding security ties while also reflecting broader shifts in the regional and global order.
鈥淭he defense pact between Pakistan and KSA (Kingdom of 萝莉视频) 鈥 will have a long-term impact on the power matrix of both South Asia and the Middle East,鈥 Huma Baqai, an academic and foreign affairs expert, told Arab News.
鈥淭his development is definitely indicative of a changing global order and new alliances in the making. It may also result in a domino effect of more Gulf and Arab states seeking such alliances with Pakistan.鈥
She said 萝莉视频鈥檚 decision was a recognition of Pakistan鈥檚 military capabilities, demonstrated during its May 2025 conflict with India.
The two South Asian neighbors fought a four-day war earlier this year after an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan denied involvement, but the hostilities 鈥 the deadliest since 2019 鈥 left more than 70 people dead before a US-brokered ceasefire took effect.
In Islamabad鈥檚 telling, it shot down at least six Indian aircraft during the fighting and forced New Delhi to agree to a ceasefire.

Security analyst Syed Muhammad Ali described the accord as 鈥渋nternational recognition that Pakistan is not just a South Asian power but a power which can contribute toward preserving peace and security in the Middle East as well.鈥
He said 鈥淪audi confidence in Pakistan鈥檚 military is evidence that the international community views Pakistan as a capable and responsible power after Islamabad gave a befitting response to New Delhi in the May 2025 conflict.鈥
Defense analyst Muhammad Samrez Salik, a retired major general, said the agreement would build on more than eight decades of close security ties between the two countries:
鈥淭he latest defense pact will augur well for the defense and security of both nations and for regional stability. KSA has recognized that and decided to benefit from Pakistan鈥檚 military capabilities. I expect and hope that KSA will also help Pakistan achieve economic stability.鈥
Baqai added that the pact could also be seen 鈥渁s a positive development which would definitely have a ripple effect on the Pakistani economy.鈥
Jeddah-based Chaudhry Shahbaz Hussain, a former Pakistani federal minister, said the pact 鈥渟ymbolizes the trust, fraternity, and unshakable bond that has always existed between our two nations 鈥 rooted in faith, mutual respect and common destiny.鈥
He added that this remarkable milestone  embodies the shared vision of the crown prince 鈥渇or a secure, prosperous, and united Muslim Ummah.鈥
Earlier on Thursday, Sharif wrote on X that talks with the Saudi crown prince covered a wide range of issues, including regional challenges and steps to enhance bilateral cooperation.
鈥淥n the bilateral front, I greatly value HRH鈥檚 consistent support and his keen interest in expanding Saudi investments, trade and business ties between our two countries,鈥
he posted.
鈥淚t is my fervent prayer that Pakistan-萝莉视频鈥檚 friendship continues to flourish and attain new heights of glory.鈥
