  • Speculation over the 40-year-old Portuguese forward’s future intensified
  • Ronaldo finished as the top scorer in back-to-back Saudi Pro League seasons

RIYADH: Al-Nassr are negotiating with Cristiano Ronaldo over a contract extension but face competition from a host of clubs eager to sign the five-times Ballon d’Or winner, the Saudi side’s sporting director Fernando Hierro said on Thursday.

Speculation over the 40-year-old Portuguese forward’s future intensified after Al-Nassr’s season-ending match at Al-Fateh on Monday, with Ronaldo posting on social media: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written.”

“Ronaldo’s contract with Al-Nassr runs until June 30. We will work to renew his contract so he can continue with us, and there are many clubs interested in signing him,” Hierro told a news conference.

Despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify for the Club World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last week that discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the June 14-July 13 tournament in the United States.

FIFA has created a special transfer window for clubs to sign players for the event, and while Wydad Casablanca had been linked with a move for Ronaldo a source close to the Moroccan side said last week they were not in talks to sign him.

Ronaldo finished as the top scorer in back-to-back Saudi Pro League seasons and Hierro described him as a trailblazer for Saudi football.

“Ronaldo’s presence from the beginning is a national project,” Hierro said.

“Cristiano has opened up soccer in this country to the world. It’s phenomenal that he had the courage to come here, stay here, and open up the Ƶn league to the world.”

  • The 28-year-old DR Congo international has been the number one target for Newcastle

LONDON: Newcastle United have agreed a fee of 55 million pounds ($74.30 million) to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, according to English media reports.

The 28-year-old DR Congo international has been the number one target for Newcastle since it became clear their striker Alexander Isak wanted to join Liverpool.

Isak was poised to complete a British record 125 million-pound move to the Premier League champions on Monday.

Wissa scored 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances for Brentford since arriving from French club Lorient but has not featured this season as he held out for a move.

Last week he issued a statement via social media pleading with Brentford to allow him to join Newcastle.

Wissa, who had two years of his contract remaining at Brentford, is expected to have a medical at Newcastle later on Monday before completing his move.

His arrival will be a boost to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe whose side have had two 0-0 draws in their opening three games.

BURAIDAH: Ivan Toney notched his second hat-trick for Al-Ahli on Sunday as the Asian champions defeated Al-Arabi 5-0 in the round of 32 in the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Cup, also known as the King Cup.

Toney scored after 31 and 82 minutes before completing his night's work deep into stoppage time at the end of the match. Enzo Millot and Fahad Al-Rashidi scored Al-Ahli’s other goals.

The win, at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Buraidah, saw Al-Ahli advance to the round of 16.

The Englishman also scored a hat-trick against Al-Hilal in February in the Roshn Saudi League, paving the way to a memorable 3-2 win for his team.

The striker has now scored five times this season: one in the Saudi Super Cup, another in the first round of the Saudi Pro League, and a hat-trick in the cup.
