Scottie Scheffler has flawless card and surges into lead at the Memorial
  • Scheffler birdied four of his last five holes, finishing with a birdie from just inside 15 feet

DUBLIN, Ohio: Scottie Scheffler was at his best on a tough day at Muirfield Village, opening with 13 straight pars and then pouring it on at the end for a 4-under 68 that gave him a one-shot lead Saturday over Ben Griffin at the Memorial.
Scheffler birdied four of his last five holes, finishing with a birdie from just inside 15 feet. He took the lead when Griffin missed a 3-foot par putt on the final hole.
At stake for Scheffler is a chance to win for the third time in his last four tournaments and join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners at the Memorial.
“I don’t know what the scoring average was today, but I was definitely proud of the way I finished and it was really challenging,” Scheffler said. “Through 13 holes, I felt like I was playing really good and I was only even par. Just a hard course.”
The scoring average for the 57 players who made the cut was 73.9, and three players failed to break 80. Scheffler, the only player to break par all three rounds, was at 8-under 208.
Griffin, who won last week at Colonial, made five birdies and five bogeys over his last 13 holes.
Scheffler was six shots behind Griffin at one point in the cool, blustery weather. And then it all changed so quickly.
Griffin, who became the only player this week to reach 10-under par when he ran off three straight birdies, gave it all back with four straight bogeys. He was in the fairway or on the tee when he made three of those bogeys.
Scheffler was lurking, as always. The world’s No. 1 player has an uncanny knack of hanging around and winding up with the low score by the end of the day. This was no exception.
“I did see that Ben got to 10 under, but it’s not going to change my play in the middle of a Saturday,” Scheffler said. “This golf course is really challenging and no lead’s safe around this place. I knew if I kept going and played a decent round, I would be in somewhat of a position to chase him down tomorrow.”
He holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 14th — his first of the day — followed getting on the collar of the green at the par-5 15th for a simple birdie. He hit 7-iron into the wind to 8 feet for birdie and closed with the last one that gave him the lead.
He’s no longer chasing, and he’s a tough customer to track down. Scheffler has won the last eight times when he held the 54-hole lead.
Jordan Spieth also was in the chase, tied with Scheffler in second place at one point, until he failed to save par from a bunker on the 17th and drove into the creek on the 18th for a closing bogey and a 72. He was five shots behind, feeling better about his game.
There was just one problem. Spieth talked about the fun of being in the mix, of making six birdies on a tough course, of needing to keep moving in that direction. And then he paused.
“The bummer for me is Scottie’s at 7 or 8 (under) and he just ... you can’t count on him shooting even tomorrow,” Spieth said. “So it would take something special. But all in all, just trying to shoot a few under each day out here.”
Nick Taylor of Canada wound up three shots behind after a 74, and for that he was thankful at the end. Taylor went into the water and made double bogey on the diabolical par-3 12th, followed that with a bogey and was sliding out of contention. And then he holed out from fairway for eagle at the 14th, birdied the next hole and played that four-stretch in even par.
The best round belonged to Sepp Straka, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour this year. He posted a 66 as the leaders were just getting started and was in the group at 3-under 213 that included Spieth and Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (68).
Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler each shot 69 and joined Shane Lowry (73) at 214. It’s a long way off, and it can feel even longer with Scheffler the one they are chasing.
“It’s a tough golf course. I’ll be trying to chase him down,” Taylor said. “He’s obviously playing phenomenal, so I’ll have to play some of my best golf to be in the hunt there with the last few holes to go. But it is playing so difficult that being a few under early will get me back in there.”

NGSC 2025 wraps up Day 2, highlighting Ƶ’s esports ambitions

RIYADH: By the time the second and final day of the New Global Sport Conference 2025 ended in Riyadh, the city had truly come alive.

Leaders, influencers, creators and gamers all shared one clear message: Ƶ is not just hosting the conversation on the future of gaming and esports — it is shaping it. With electric energy buzzing through every corridor, the closing day felt less like an ending and more like a launchpad for what is to come.

As Peter Moore, former CEO of Liverpool FC, told Arab News: “Ƶ is the only country in the world that has an esports strategy as part of Vision 2030.” Speaking during one of the sessions, he added: “Esports will open the Kingdom’s arms to the world … I leave here blown away by what this country can do.”

Among the many standout discussions was “Content for the Next Generation: Revolutionizing Platforms, Formats, and Fan Engagement,” where Toshimoto Mitomo, chief strategy officer at Sony, spotlighted the impact of the MENA Hero Project — a program that has already drawn more than 200 applications from local developers and is now helping five projects prepare for commercial launch.

“Our role is to incubate creators so their games can reach global markets,” Mitomo said. “We’re enabling a vibrant ecosystem powered by local ingenuity and global ambition.”

The final session of the day — and of the conference —had attendees packing the room: “Blurring the Lines Between Games and Cinema.” Hosted by Rolling Stone’s senior gaming editor Christopher Cruz, the panel featured legendary game creator Hideo Kojima and acclaimed filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. Together, they explored the merging worlds of interactive entertainment and cinema, touching on advancements such as artificial intelligence, 3D graphics, and online connectivity that are redefining how stories are told.

Kojima, reflecting on Ƶ’s bold investments in gaming, praised the Kingdom’s forward-thinking approach: “The country I look at and they’re kind of creating something for the future. I feel so envious of this country. Everyone’s looking at this future … You have everything you need to create something new — art, movies, games. Let’s create the future together. And I want to play that, and I want to see that.”

Throughout the day, a range of sessions highlighted the global momentum of gaming and esports. Panels such as “Power Moves: Next-Gen Dealmakers in Gaming & Esports Investments” and “Content for the Next Generation” explored how innovation, technology, and investment are rapidly expanding opportunities — not just for players and developers, but for entire communities.

When the final applause echoed through the venue, it was clear that NGSC 2025 had achieved more than just two days of dialogue. It had galvanized a movement. Attendees left with notebooks filled with ideas, pockets full of LinkedIn connections, and a sense of shared purpose.

In just two days, Riyadh had established itself as more than a meeting ground; it had become the nerve center of a global industry in motion. NGSC 2025 did not simply end — it launched a new chapter, proving that Ƶ is no longer just part of the game. It is helping to define its future.

Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara calls time on illustrious career
  • Pujara played 103 test matches but failed to win back his place in the Indian side in the last two years
  • The 37-year-old, who made test debut in 2010, last played for India in 2023 World Test Championship

NEW DELHI: Veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara dropped curtains on his illustrious India career on Sunday after playing 103 tests but failing to win back his place in the last two years.

The 37-year-old, who made his test debut in 2010, last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final but has been active in domestic cricket as well as county cricket in England.

“Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field — it’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant,” Pujara wrote on his social media pages.

“But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket.

“Thank you for all the love and support!“

He joins former India captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the same generation to quit test cricket within the past year.

Pujara scored 7,195 runs, including 19 hundreds, from 103 tests, averaging 43.60.

Pujara also played five one-day internationals but his solid defense and a remarkable ability to play marathon knocks made him an asset in test cricket.

He demonstrated those skills most notably in 2018-19 when India registered their maiden test series victory in Australia with player-of-the-series Pujara amassing 521 runs in seven innings.

Pujara batted a combined 11 hours in the opening test in Adelaide scoring 123 and 71 as India won the series opener.

Former India captain Anil Kumble led tributes to Pujara.

“Congratulations on a fantastic career! You have been a great ambassador of this wonderful game @cheteshwar1,” Kumble, who also coached an Indian side featuring Pujara, wrote on X.

“We are all proud of all your achievements on the cricket field. You gave it your all for the team! It was a privilege to have worked with you and may you continue to shine in your second innings.”

British wheelchair basketball players turn backs on Israeli opponents before game
  • Apparent protest took place as Israeli national anthem played before match in Germany
  • Israeli Paralympic Committee has complained to International Wheelchair Basketball Federation

LONDON: Members of the Great Britain wheelchair basketball team turned their backs on their Israeli opponents before a game in Germany.

The teams were taking part in the Wheelchair Basketball Nations Cup in Cologne on Aug. 16, and the incident came before the tip-off during the playing of the national anthems.

Footage has emerged showing the two teams lined up on either side of the court, and the British basketball players appearing to turn their backs on the Israeli team and flag as the latter’s national anthem was played as part of the pre-match ceremony.

The Israeli team, lined up in front of the British players, were not aware at the time of what was occurring. British coaches did not take part in the apparent protest.

The Israeli Paralympic Committee has lodged a complaint with the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation.

A spokesperson for British Wheelchair Basketball told the Daily Telegraph that it is “aware of the incident,” adding: “We are continuing discussions internally after conversations with ParalympicsGB, IWBF and the Israeli Paralympic Committee.”
