In a recent press conference, held ahead of Hajj, the Kingdom detailed preparations aligned with the directives of Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud. The strategy covers public safety, crowd and traffic control, and emergency responses throughout the pilgrims鈥 journey.

Authorities reported the dismantling of 252 fake Hajj campaigns, the arrest of 1,239 illegal transporters, and the return of 269,678 non-residents of Makkah, 75,943 unauthorized pilgrims and 109,632 vehicles. An additional 11,610 individuals were found violating residency, labor and border laws.

The move is part of a broader effort by authorities to safeguard the sanctity of the pilgrimage and ensure the safety and comfort of registered pilgrims.

The ministry warned that foreign nationals found in violation would, in addition to the financial penalty, be deported to their home countries and barred from re-entering the Kingdom for ten years.

The ministry also confirmed that a financial penalty of up to SR100,000 would be imposed on anyone who transported holders of visit visas or attempted to transport them with the intent of bringing them to the city of Makkah or the holy sites during the same period.

The ministry added it would request the competent court to confiscate any land transport vehicle proven to have been used for this purpose if owned by the transporter, an accomplice or any party found to be involved.

In previous years, emergency rooms in Makkah hospitals were often overwhelmed with medical cases involving individuals who entered the city without valid Hajj permits. Many lacked access to official accommodation and transportation, resulting in overcrowding not only in emergency facilities but also in the Grand Mosque and the holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat 鈥 areas whose capacity is topographically constrained.

Pilgrims have voiced their support for the tightened rules. In previous seasons, illegal pilgrims strained logistical operations, including food distribution, transportation schedules and accommodation management.

Indian couple Altaf Hussein and his wife Farhana told Arab News that they were pleased with the running of this year鈥檚 Hajj.

鈥淚 am happy with their management,鈥 Hussein said. Farhana added that it was her first time performing Hajj and that it was unlike what she had heard about.

鈥淔rom day one in Makkah, I am so happy and thankful to Allah the Almighty, and may Allah keep the two holy mosques鈥 management prosper,鈥 she said.

Marwa Al-Said, an Egyptian pilgrim, said that this year鈥檚 Hajj felt 鈥渆specially exceptional鈥 with unauthorized pilgrims barred from entering Makkah.

鈥淚 would like to thank you all. The arrangements you are applying this year are truly different,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 feel comfortable 鈥 there is no hardship, no fear and none of the worries we usually hear about during Hajj. It is, seriously speaking, real security.鈥

According to an official at Jabal Al-Rahma Hospital in Arafat, the one-day facility 鈥 which in previous years typically received hundreds of patients during the Hajj season 鈥 had recorded only two emergency cases as of 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

How Ihram clothing is tailored and designed for Hajj

How Ihram clothing is tailored and designed for Hajj

How Ihram clothing is tailored and designed for Hajj
  • Ihram represents spiritual purity and equality of pilgrimage
  • New technologies introduce Ihram with anti-bacterial properties 听

RIYADH: During Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, Muslim men wear Ihram 鈥 simple attire representing purity and equality.

Ihram is made of two white unstitched pieces of fabric. One, the Izar, is wrapped around the waist while the other, the Rida鈥, covers the shoulders.

鈥淚hram is worn by men during Hajj and Umrah, and it is always unstitched and white,鈥 Abdullah Al-Ahmad, who owns a menswear store in Riyadh, said.

鈥(It) usually consists of two pieces, a lower piece and an upper piece, and the most popular types of Ihram in the market are those made of elastic, and those tied around the belt. People usually prefer cotton, especially Egyptian cotton, for its high quality; also because cotton is softer on the skin and does not absorb heat.鈥

Hamad Al-Yami, a Saudi inventor in nanotechnology and member of the International Federation of Inventors鈥 Associations, talked to Arab News about his nano-silver technology Ihram.

鈥淭he idea originated while I was working at the Saudi Ministry of Health, where I noticed the need for antibacterial medical clothing,鈥 he explained.

鈥淭he concept later evolved to include Ihram clothing after studying the challenges pilgrims face, such as the spread of infection in crowded conditions, wearing Ihram for a long period of time, sometimes for days at a time, and the limited effectiveness of traditional fabrics.鈥

He added he was inspired by the historical use of silver for sterilization and developed a technique using silver nanoparticles, each about one-millionth of a millimeter, to sterilize cotton fabric. The primary purpose of his invention was to reduce infection, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Along with his antibacterial clothing, he has future plans to work on recycled Ihrams and turn them into eco-friendly products like bags or pillows that could be used in mosques.

While men wear Ihram, women have more flexibility when it comes to clothing choices during Hajj, although modesty is still a requirement when choosing fabric and colors.

Due to the hot weather in the Makkah region, most women prefer lightweight, breathable materials such as cotton and linen.

鈥淭here are no specific clothes for women. Any texture, any color, as long as it is not decorated and is socially appropriate for Hajj. It should be modest and mostly white or beige,鈥 said pilgrim Afnan Al-Harbi.

鈥淚 used to wear white because it was hot and sunny in Makkah and the color is cooler a little bit. We also don鈥檛 wear perfumes, we don鈥檛 cover our faces, and we don鈥檛 wear gloves. Still, a lot of pilgrims at the time were wearing black abayas.鈥

Wearing the Ihram is not a fashion choice. It indicates a state of spiritual readiness to submit to God and clear the mind and body of all negativity, so that Hajj can be begun with a positive mindset.
