WHO says to remain in Gaza City despite Israelâs call to leave
âTo civilians in Gaza: WHO and partners remain in Gaza City,â the World Health Organization said on its X account
Updated 11 September 2025

GENEVA: The UNâs health agency said Wednesday its workers will remain in Gaza City despite calls from Israelâs military for people to flee an assault it is mounting there.
âTo civilians in Gaza: WHO and partners remain in Gaza City,â the World Health Organization said on its X account.
Israelâs army is intensifying its attacks on Gaza City â the main urban center in the besieged Gaza Strip â with the goal of seizing the city. This week, it warned civilians there to leave.
The UN estimates that around one million Palestinians live in and around Gaza City.
âWHO is appalled by the latest evacuation order,â the head of the UN agency, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on X.
He said the Israeli demand that the cityâs one million people go to what Israel was calling a âhumanitarian zoneâ in the south of the Gaza Strip was unfeasible.
âThe zone has neither the size nor scale of services to support those already there, let alone new arrivals,â he said.
Tedros pointed out that half of the functioning hospitals left in the Gaza Strip were in Gaza City, and the territoryâs âcrippled health system cannot afford to lose any of these remaining facilities.â
He urged the international community to âact,â saying that, in Gaza, âthis catastrophe is human-made, and the responsibility rests with us all.â
Israel has been waging offensive operations in Gaza since October 2023, following a deadly attack launched from there by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.
Israelâs retaliatory offensive has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza that the United Nations considers reliable.
The UN has declared famine in parts of Gaza, which Israel contests.
Qatar rejects Netanyahuâs âshamefulâ attempt to justify Israelâs âcowardly attackâ
Says Netanyahu fully aware that Qatarâs hosting of Hamas office falls within Dohaâs mediation efforts requested by the US and IsraelÂ

RIYADH: Qatar denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuâs remarks about Dohaâs hosting of a Hamas office as ârecklessâ and a âshameful attemptâ to justify Israelâs âcowardly attackâ on Qatari territory.
âNetanyahu is fully aware that the hosting of the Hamas office took place within the framework of Qatarâs mediation efforts requested by the United States and Israel,â Qatar said in a strongly worded statement issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He made the remark as Israel came under international condemnation after launching an air strike Tuesday on a building in Qatar in a bid to assassinate Hamas political leaders.
The airstrike took place shortly after Hamas claimed responsibility for a shooting on Monday that killed six people at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
On Wednesday, Netanyahu urged Qatar to expel Hamas officials or hold them to account, âbecause if you donât, we willâ.
His comments came a day after deadly strikes targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar â a US ally â a first in the oil-rich Gulf that rattled a region long shielded from conflict.
Qatar, which said one of its security forces was killed in the attack, said Israel was treacherous and engaged in âstate terrorism.â
Also on Wednesday, Qatarâs Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said the attack killed hope for Gaza hostages, calling for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu to be âbrought to justice.â
World must act
The Qatari statement called on the international community to âshoulder its responsibility by rejecting Netanyahuâs Islamophobic and inciteful rhetoricâ and to put âan end to political distortions that undermine mediation efforts and obstruct the pursuit of peace.â
In rejecting Netanyahuâs rhetoric, Qatar pointed out that the Israeli leader was fully aware of the Gulf nationâs role in facilitating numerous exchanges and ceasefires, which have âbrought relief to Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages in desperate need of basic humanitarian relief from the ruthlessness that has ensued since October 7th.â
It said the negotiations were always held in an official and transparent manner, with international support and in the presence of US and Israeli delegations.
âNetanyahuâs insinuation that Qatar secretly harbored the Hamas delegation is a desperate attempt to justify a crime condemned by the entire world,â the statement said.
âThe false comparison to the pursuit of al-Qaeda after the terrorist attacks is a new, miserable justification for its treacherous practices. There was no international mediation involving an al-Qaeda negotiating delegation, with which the United States could engage with international support, to bring peace to the region at the time,â it added.
Tunisia says âassaultâ on Gaza aid ship was âorchestratedâ
Earlier on Wednesday, thousands of Tunisians gathered on the picturesque beach of Sidi Bou Said to support pro-Palestinian activists on the boats, one of the biggest flotillas yet to set sail for Gaza

TUNIS: Tunisia said on Wednesday the âassaultâ on a ship at Sidi Bou Said port was âorchestrated,â after the Global Sumud Flotilla, preparing to deliver aid to Gaza, reported one of its boats was attacked by a drone in the second such strike in two days.
GSF is set to sail for Gaza in an effort to break Israelâs naval blockade, following two nights of drone attacks on key vessels in the convoy which organizers described as deliberate attempts by Israel to disrupt the mission.
The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment.
There were no injuries, and civil protection authorities brought a fire on the boat under control on Wednesday night.
The Tunisian interior Ministry, which did not accuse any party or country, said in a statement that it was conducting investigations into the drone attack.
The United Nationsâ Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, told Reuters on Tuesday âit is an attack against Tunisian sovereignty.â
Earlier on Wednesday, thousands of Tunisians gathered on the picturesque beach of Sidi Bou Said to support pro-Palestinian activists on the boats, one of the biggest flotillas yet to set sail for Gaza.
The flotilla, which includes hundreds of activists and dozens of boats, is supported by delegations from 44 countries, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Portuguese left-wing politician Mariana Mortagua.
Israel has maintained a blockade on the coastal enclave since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, saying it is needed to prevent weapons smuggling.
The blockade has remained in place through the current war, which began when Hamas attacked southern Israel in October 2023, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, Israeli tallies showed.
Israelâs subsequent military assault against Hamas has killed over 64,000 Palestinians, Gazaâs health ministry has said, while a global hunger monitor said part of the enclave is suffering from famine.
Israel sealed off Gaza by land in early March, letting in no supplies for three months, leading to the widespread shortage of food. Israel has said Hamas was diverting the aid.
Russia condemns Israeli strike on Qatar as âgross violationâ of UN charter
âRussia considers this incident a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter,â the Russian Foreign Ministry said
Lavrov said there was a danger the Israeli action could âlead to further destabilization in the Middle Eastâ

MOSCOW: Russia on Wednesday condemned an Israeli attack against Hamas members in Qatarâs capital Doha and urged all parties to refrain from actions that would further escalate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
âRussia considers this incident a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, an encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent state, and a step leading to further escalation and destabilization of the situation in the Middle East,â the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
âSuch methods of fighting those whom Israel considers its enemies and opponents deserve the strongest condemnation.â
US President Donald Trump said he was âvery unhappy about every aspectâ of the Israeli strike and would be giving a full statement on the issue on Wednesday.
âThe rocket attack on Qatar ... cannot be perceived as anything other than an action aimed at undermining international efforts to find peaceful solutions,â Russia said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a later telephone call with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, described the attack as âa violation of international law and an unacceptable encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of friendly Qatar.â
A Russian Foreign Ministry statement quoted Lavrov as saying there was a danger the Israeli action could âlead to further destabilization in the Middle East.â
The statement said the Qatari prime minister noted Russiaâs âclear and principled positionâ in support of Qatarâs sovereignty and independence.
