JEDDAH: With digital innovation taking place at a rapid pace, Awaser, a mobile application developed in 萝莉视频, is at the forefront of a quiet transformation in the Kingdom鈥檚 matchmaking traditions.

It offers a modern approach to marriage, but remains firmly rooted in cultural and religious values.

Founded by psychiatrist Dr. Mohammed Alolayan, Awaser is not just a dating platform but a dedicated space for individuals and families with the intention of forming lasting marriages.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a clear need, and many people are ready to embrace technology, so long as it honors our values. Awaser allows them to do both.鈥 (Supplied)

With features tailored to 萝莉视频鈥檚 cultural norms and a strong emphasis on privacy, the app introduces a respectful and structured alternative to traditional matchmaking.

Speaking about the inspiration behind creating the first app of its kind, Alolayan said: 鈥淎s a trained psychiatrist, I鈥檝e spent years exploring human psychology and understanding the deep emotional challenges people face, especially in midlife, around intimacy and the question of 鈥榃ho should I be with?鈥

鈥淟istening to countless stories from patients and online followers, I realized how difficult it is for many to find a suitable partner within the traditional framework. That鈥檚 what inspired me to create Awaser.鈥

HIGHLIGHTS

鈥 Awaser gives users the tools to search based on preferences unique to Saudi society, including regional origin, family background, education, sect, and tribal affiliation.听

鈥 This approach blends technology with cultural traditions, creating a platform that speaks to both the younger generation and their families.听

Unlike typical matchmaking apps that rely on algorithms to suggest potential partners, Awaser gives users the tools to search based on preferences unique to 萝莉视频 society, including regional origin, family background, education, sect, and tribal affiliation.

This approach blends technology with cultural traditions, creating a platform that speaks to both the younger generation and their families.

Alolayan said: 鈥淎waser does not offer matchmaking in the conventional sense. Instead, it elevates traditional matchmaking by making it more accessible and efficient.

Dr. Mohammed Alolayan

鈥淚t鈥檚 a platform that respects Saudi customs while empowering individuals and families to make informed choices.鈥

One of the app鈥檚 most distinctive features is the ability for families to create and manage accounts on behalf of their children, a model that preserves the essence of traditional matchmaking while increasing the chances of finding a suitable match.

This family-first approach has resonated strongly with conservative users seeking to maintain trust throughout the process.

The app operates on a paid subscription model, which Alolayan believes ensures the quality and seriousness of its community. 鈥淲e implemented a payment wall to ensure serious participation and prevent random or unserious users,鈥 he said.

鈥淭rust is crucial. That鈥檚 why users must verify with a Saudi mobile number and OTP (One-Time Password), and all communications are encrypted and automatically deleted after 30 days of inactivity.鈥

Privacy is a key concern for users in 萝莉视频, particularly when it comes to online interactions between men and women.

Awaser addresses this by giving users complete control over their profiles and conversations, with no human intervention from the app鈥檚 management team. Conversations cannot begin without mutual consent, and all user data remains private and protected.

The platform currently focuses on Saudi nationals and residents, and has already had impressive engagement, especially from well-educated individuals.

鈥淎round 30 to 40 percent of our users hold advanced degrees such as master鈥檚 or PhDs. While we expected high participation from major cities, we were pleasantly surprised to see users from nearly every region of the Kingdom,鈥 he said.

Among the many success stories shared by users, one stands out for Alolayan: 鈥淎 couple who met on Awaser married about a year and a half ago, and they recently welcomed their first child.

鈥淗earing that directly from them was incredibly moving, it validated everything we鈥檝e been working toward.鈥

In a culture where family involvement remains a cornerstone of the marriage process, launching a technology-driven platform presented unique challenges. But the public response,听 Alolayan said, has been overwhelmingly positive.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a clear need, and many people are ready to embrace technology, so long as it honors our values. Awaser allows them to do both.鈥

Umm Abdullah, a user of the app, said: 鈥淎s a mother, I鈥檝e seen how difficult it鈥檚 become to find suitable matches, and approaching someone as the bride鈥檚 parents is not very common in our culture, we usually wait for proposals to come.

鈥淎pps like this give us the chance to actively search instead of just waiting. It feels more efficient, while still respecting our values.鈥

Interestingly, Awaser also provides a space for non-traditional introductions between individuals, allowing for more autonomy in the relationship-building phase.

This dual approach supporting both traditional and independent searches reflects the evolving preferences of younger Saudis who want to play a more active role in choosing their life partners.

Alolayan said: 鈥淭he younger generation increasingly wants to take ownership of their marriage journey in terms of to get to know their future partner before traditional steps begin.

鈥淎waser arrived at just the right time to meet this shift. It offers an alternative that feels modern yet grounded in cultural values.鈥

Another user, Naser Al-Rahman, said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 really hard these days to find a relationship that leads to something serious. Most platforms don鈥檛 feel safe or genuine.

鈥淏ut with this app, I feel like I can search more conveniently and securely, knowing the people here are serious about marriage.鈥

Although Awaser does not currently employ artificial intelligence to match users, Alolayan is open to future possibilities. 鈥淭here is no proven psychological model for perfect matchmaking, which is why we don鈥檛 claim to match people ourselves.

鈥淏ut I do see potential for AI and data analytics to provide smarter tools in the future, based on long-term user behavior.鈥

As 萝莉视频 continues its Vision 2030 journey toward modernization and empowerment, platforms such as Awaser highlight how digital solutions can coexist with tradition.

Commenting on the legal and cultural implications of matchmaking platforms, family lawyer Hassan Al-Ghawi said: 鈥淎pps like these help bridge the gap between tradition and technology.

鈥淎s long as user privacy is protected and the legal framework is respected, they can serve as a positive and legitimate extension of traditional matchmaking.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 younger generation often rushes into relationships, so involving both parents and children in the process allows for deeper understanding and more thoughtful decisions, potentially leading to stronger, longer-lasting marriages and fewer divorces.鈥

Linguistic code-switching new norm for young Saudis

  • Expert tells Arab News that 鈥榤ulti-dimensional issue鈥 deserves recognition

RIYADH: In 萝莉视频鈥檚 increasingly globalized society, especially among young people in major cities, there is an easy blending of languages, often switching between Arabic and English in the same conversation.

This phenomenon, known as code-switching, has become a linguistic norm that reflects shifting social dynamics, culture and identity.

A 2024 study conducted by Kais Sultan Mousa Alowidha at Jouf University found that bilingual Saudis often switch between Arabic and English depending on the context, particularly in casual or professional settings.

The blending of languages can be seen not as a dilution of heritage, but a reflection of its outward-looking generation. (Supplied)

Saudi students who have studied or grown up abroad find themselves flipping between languages almost unconsciously.

Abdullah Almuayyad, a Saudi senior at the University of Washington, Seattle, who has spent more than half his life in the US, spoke to Arab News about his experiences with both languages.

鈥淐omfort really depends on context,鈥 he said. 鈥淒ay-to-day I鈥檓 equally at ease in either language, but the setting matters.鈥

HIGHLIGHTS

鈥 The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language in Riyadh has launched several initiatives to strengthen Arabic fluency, both for native speakers and non-native learners.

鈥 A 2024 study from Jouf University found that bilingual Saudis often switch between Arabic and English depending on the context, particularly in casual or professional settings.

In business settings, he defaults to English because of his education and professional exposure, but casual or family settings feel more natural in Arabic.

鈥淪ometimes my friends tease me because I鈥檒l begin a sentence in Arabic, hit a complex business concept, and flip to English mid-stream.鈥

This mental switching, he explained, is often tied to topic-specific language associations.

Some topics are assigned to a specific language in his brain. 鈥淥nce the topic surfaces, the corresponding language follows automatically.鈥

At an institutional level, efforts to preserve and promote Arabic are gaining traction in 萝莉视频.

The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language in Riyadh has launched several initiatives to strengthen Arabic fluency, both for native speakers and non-native learners.

Through academic partnerships, digital tools, and training programs, the academy is playing a key role in ensuring Arabic remains a vibrant and accessible language.

The institute reflects a broader national push to reinforce cultural identity amid the linguistic shifts brought on by globalization.

Majd Tohme, senior linguist at SURV Linguistics in Riyadh, told Arab News that code-switching is 鈥渁 very multi-dimensional issue.鈥

He emphasized that the debate should not hinge on whether code-switching is good or bad.

鈥淲hat we need to ask ourselves is, does code-switching work in the everyday context? And if it works, isn鈥檛 that the purpose of any linguistic pattern?鈥

He added that language purism might miss the point entirely.

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to get involved in that language puritanism 鈥 and code-switching is not really something new. Languages are living organisms that evolve,鈥 he explained.

Many words we consider native today, he noted, have foreign origins, such as from Persian or European languages, particularly in science and technology.

Still, there are concerns about the erosion of Arabic. Tohme acknowledged the threat but said it is not exclusive to Arabic.

鈥淚t is a threat to all languages,鈥 he said, especially in the era of globalized communication where the internet has become a shared space dominated by English.

鈥淵ou now have one internet that the world is sharing,鈥 he explained. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like one huge playground where you have 8 billion people trying to communicate with each other.鈥

And yet, there are signs of balance.

Almuayyad, for instance, actively challenges himself and his peers to preserve Arabic fluency.

鈥淚n eighth grade, even though my friends and I preferred English, we agreed to speak only Arabic until it felt natural,鈥 he said. 鈥淟ater, when my Arabic caught up, I switched and spoke only English with friends who wanted practice.鈥

For many, especially in 萝莉视频鈥檚 larger cities, bilingualism no longer means choosing between one language over the other.

The constant nudge to challenge each other keeps both languages active and growing.

The Jouf University study found that bilingual Saudis strongly identify with both languages and do not believe that speaking English negates their cultural identity.

It also concluded that code-switching is often required in larger cities due to the abundance of non-Arabic speakers in public and professional environments.

Therefore, code-switching, especially in the Kingdom, appears to be less about identity loss and more about functionality.

As 萝莉视频 opens up globally and embraces multiculturalism under Vision 2030, this blending of languages could be seen not as a dilution of heritage, but a reflection of its outward-looking generation.

According to Tohme, the psychological impact of going abroad for a few years then returning to your home country also cannot be understated.

Students develop a certain nostalgia for home while spending so many years abroad speaking extensively in a foreign language. They may develop the determination to make a conscious effort to strengthen their Arabic-language skills again.

Almuayyad is someone who can relate to that and says if he had spent his whole life in the Kingdom, his language development might not have been that different.

鈥淚 see a lot of people in Saudi who use English freely because global media and online content are so dominant,鈥 he explained.

Yet, he admits that growing up in one place can limit the push to step outside of your linguistic comfort zone. 鈥淢y exposure to two cultures forced me to practice that stretch constantly.鈥

  • Kingdom condemned continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, interference in its internal affairs, and the destabilization of its security and stability

RIYADH: 萝莉视频 expressed its satisfaction with measures taken by the Syrian government to achieve security and stability, maintain civil peace, and achieve sovereignty over all Syrian territory on Tuesday.

The Kingdom also condemned continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, interference in its internal affairs, and the destabilization of its security and stability, in flagrant violation of international law and the Syria-Israel Disengagement Agreement signed in 1974.

The condemnation comes after Israel launched strikes on Tuesday against Syrian government forces in the Druze-majority region of Sweida, saying it was acting to protect the religious minority.

Damascus had deployed troops to Sweida after clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes killed more than 100 people.

Israel announced its strikes shortly after Syria鈥檚 defense minister declared a ceasefire in Sweida city, with government forces having entered the city in the morning.

The Kingdom renewed its call on the international community to stand by Syria, support it during this stage, and confront ongoing Israeli attacks and violations against Syria, Saudi Press Agency reported.

RIYADH: Diriyah Gov. Prince Fahd bin Saad bin Abdullah has praised the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture for developing the date production sector in the Kingdom and enhancing the quality of dates as a national product.

He highlighted the ministry鈥檚 support programs for farmers and initiatives that add value to dates, aligning with Vision 2030 goals, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

His remarks came during the inauguration of the Diriyah Dates Season and accompanying exhibition, which runs until July 24.

The event, organized by the National Center for Palms and Dates, aims to boost the sale of Saudi dates locally and globally, and provide an insight into Diriyah鈥檚 heritage through cultural and social activities.

The exhibition features booths for date vendors, processed date products, palm by-products and items from family-run cottage industries. It also has restaurants, cafes, food trucks, workshops for adults and children, a date auction zone and a horse parade.

The Ministry of Culture is also represented with a booth showcasing artisans specializing in palm-based crafts as part of the Year of Handicrafts.
