- 鈥淚ran鈥檚 nuclear ambitions have been obliterated,鈥 Defense Sec. Hegseth said Sunday
TEL AVIV: The US military struck three sites in Iran early Sunday, inserting itself into Israel鈥檚 war aimed at destroying the country鈥檚 nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran鈥檚 threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.
President Donald Trump said Iran鈥檚 key nuclear sites were 鈥渃ompletely and fully obliterated,鈥 and he warned Iran against carrying out retaliatory attacks, saying the US could hit more targets 鈥渨ith precision, speed and skill.鈥

The decision to directly involve the US in the war comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that aimed to systematically eradicate the country鈥檚 air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.
鈥淲e have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,鈥 Trump said in a post on social media. 鈥淎ll planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.鈥
Trump added in a later post: 鈥淭his is an HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ISRAEL, AND THE WORLD. IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR. THANK YOU!鈥
Later on Sunday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities were an incredible and overwhelming success that have obliterated Tehran鈥檚 nuclear ambitions.
The US strikes included 14 bunker-buster bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles and over 125 military aircraft, in an operation the top US general, General Dan Caine, said was named 鈥淥peration Midnight.鈥
鈥淚ran鈥檚 nuclear ambitions have been obliterated,鈥 Hegseth told reporters in a briefing, adding that said the strikes did not target Iranian troops or people.
鈥淭he operation President Trump planned was bold and it was brilliant, showing the world that American deterrence is back. When this president speaks, the world should listen,鈥 Hegseth said.
US orders more diplomatic staff to leave Iraq, Lebanon
The US has ordered staff from its diplomatic missions in Iraq and Lebanon to leave the countries, with the departures taking place as American strikes on Sunday targeted nuclear facilities in nearby Iran.
More diplomatic personnel left Iraq on Saturday and Sunday as part of ongoing efforts to 鈥渟treamline operations,鈥 a US official told AFP.
The departures were a continuation of a process that started last week 鈥渙ut of an abundance of caution and due to heightened regional tensions,鈥 the official added.
In Lebanon, the US embassy said the State Department on Sunday had ordered staffers鈥 family members and non-emergency US government personnel to leave the country.
A statement on the embassy website cited 鈥渢he volatile and unpredictable security situation in the region.鈥
France, Germany, UK urge Iran to refrain from 鈥榓ction that could destabilize the region鈥
The leaders of Britain, France and Germany on Sunday urged Iran not to take any actions that would further destabilize the region following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities overnight.
鈥淲e have consistently been clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon and can no longer pose a threat to regional security,鈥 the government heads of Germany, Britain, France, known as the E3, said in a joint statement.
鈥淲e call upon Iran to engage in negotiations leading to an agreement that addresses all concerns associated with its nuclear program. We stand ready to contribute to that goal in coordination with all parties.鈥
The E3 also confirmed their support for the security of Israel, the statement said.
鈥淲e will continue our joint diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and ensure the conflict does not intensify and spread further,鈥 the E3 statement said.

Israel says struck 鈥榙ozens鈥 of sites in Iran on Sunday
The Israeli military said its fighter jets had struck 鈥渄ozens鈥 of targets across Iran on Sunday, including a long-range missile site in Yazd in the center of the country for the first time.
A statement said that 鈥渁pproximately 30 IAF (air force) fighter jets struck dozens of military targets throughout Iran鈥 鈥 including 鈥渢he 鈥業mam Hussein鈥 Strategic Missile Command Center in the Yazd area, where long-range Khorramshahr missiles were stored.鈥
The statement also confirmed strikes on missile launchers in Bushehr province, where a 鈥渕assive explosion鈥 was reported by Iranian media on Sunday, as well as in Ahvaz in the southwest and central Isfahan.
Isfahan is home to a uranium conversion facility targeted by more than two dozen missiles fired from a US submarine in the Middle East overnight.
Iran鈥檚 top security body to decide on Hormuz closure after parliament approval, say reports
Iran鈥檚 Supreme National Security Council must make the final decision on whether to close the Strait of Hormuz, Iran鈥檚 Press TV said on Sunday, after parliament reportedly approved the measure.
The decision to close the strait, through which around 20 percent of global oil and gas demand flows, is not yet final.
But lawmaker and Revolutionary Guards Commander Esmail Kosari told the Young Journalist Club on Sunday that doing so is on the agenda and 鈥渨ill be done whenever necessary.鈥

Iran asks for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over US strikes
Iran鈥檚 ambassador to the United Nations called on Sunday for an emergency Security Council meeting for what he described as America's 鈥渉einous attacks and illegal use of force鈥 against Iran.
In a letter, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, said that the UN鈥檚 most powerful body must 鈥渢ake all necessary measures鈥 to hold the US accountable under international law and the UN charter.
鈥淭he Islamic Republic of Iran condemns and denounces in the strongest possible terms these unprovoked and premeditated acts of aggression, which have followed the large-scale military attack conducted by the Israeli regime on 13 June against Iran鈥檚 peaceful nuclear sites and facilities," the letter continued.

Israel closes airspace, carriers cancel flights
Israel鈥檚 two largest carriers, El Al Israel Airlines and Arkia, said on Sunday they were suspending rescue flights that allowed people to return to Israel until further notice. El Al said it would also extend its cancellation of scheduled flights through June 27.
Israel鈥檚 airports authority said the country鈥檚 airspace was closed for all flights, but land crossings with Egypt and Jordan remained open.

Araghchi: 鈥業ran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty鈥
Iran reserves all options to defend itself after US strikes on its nuclear facilities, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday on X, saying the attacks were 鈥渙utrageous and will have everlasting consequences鈥.
鈥淭he United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran鈥檚 peaceful nuclear installations,鈥 he said.
鈥淭he events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.
鈥淚n accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people,鈥 foreign minister added.
US signals a willingness to renew talks with Iran
Late on Sunday, the Trump administration signaled a willingness to renew talks with Iran and avoid a prolonged war.
The coordinated messaging by Trump鈥檚 vice president, Pentagon chief, top military adviser and secretary of state suggested a confidence that any fallout would be manageable and that Iran鈥檚 lack of military capabilities would ultimately force it back to the bargaining table.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a news conference that America 鈥渄oes not seek war鈥 with Iran, while Vice President JD Vance said the strikes have given Tehran the possibility of returning to negotiate with Washington.

Netanyahu hails Trump for making 鈥渂old decision鈥
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump鈥檚 decision to attack in a video message directed at the American president.
鈥淵our bold decision to target Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities, with the awesome and righteous might of the United States, will change history,鈥 he said. Netanyahu said the US 鈥渉as done what no other country on earth could do.鈥
Israel鈥檚 Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon鈥檚 reaction to America鈥檚 attack on Iranian nuclear facilities: 鈥淭hank you President Trump for your historic decision to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Today, President Trump proved that 鈥淣ever Again鈥 is not just a slogan 鈥 it鈥檚 a policy.鈥
The White House and Pentagon did not immediately elaborate on the operation. But Fox News host Sean Hannity said shortly after 9 p.m. Eastern that he had spoken with Trump and that six bunker buster bombs were used on the Fordow facility. Hannity said 30 Tomahawk missiles fired by US submarines 400 miles away struck the Iranian nuclear sites of Natanz and Isfahan.
The strikes are a perilous decision, as Iran has pledged to retaliate if the US joined the Israeli assault, and for Trump personally. He won the White House on the promise of keeping America out of costly foreign conflicts and scoffed at the value of American interventionism.
UN chief bewails 鈥渄angerous escalation鈥
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that he was 鈥済ravely alarmed鈥 by the 鈥渄angerous escalation鈥 of American strikes.
鈥淭here is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control 鈥 with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world,鈥 he said in a statement.
Trump told reporters Friday that he was not interested in sending ground forces into Iran, saying it鈥檚 鈥渢he last thing you want to do.鈥 He had previously indicated that he would make a final choice over the course of two weeks.
Iran鈥檚 Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the United States on Wednesday that strikes targeting the Islamic Republic will 鈥渞esult in irreparable damage for them.鈥 And Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei declared 鈥渁ny American intervention would be a recipe for an all-out war in the region.鈥
Trump has vowed that he would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, and he had initially hoped that the threat of force would bring the country鈥檚 leaders to give up its nuclear program peacefully.
The Israeli military said Saturday it was preparing for the possibility of a lengthy war, while Iran鈥檚 foreign minister warned before the US attack that American military involvement 鈥渨ould be very, very dangerous for everyone.鈥
The prospect of a wider war loomed. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said they would resume attacks on US vessels in the Red Sea if the Trump administration joined Israel鈥檚 military campaign. The Houthis paused such attacks in May under a deal with the US.
The US ambassador to Israel announced that the US had begun 鈥渁ssisted departure flights,鈥 the first from Israel since the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, that sparked the war in Gaza.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that Trump planned to make his decision on the strikes within two weeks. Instead, he struck just two days later.
Trump appears to have made the calculation 鈥 at the prodding of Israeli officials and many Republican lawmakers 鈥 that Israel鈥檚 operation had softened the ground and presented a perhaps unparalleled opportunity to set back Iran鈥檚 nuclear program, perhaps permanently.
The Israelis say their offensive has already crippled Iran鈥檚 air defenses, allowing them to already significantly degrade multiple Iranian nuclear sites.
But to destroy the Fordow nuclear fuel enrichment plant, Israel appealed to Trump for the bunker-busting American bomb known as the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, which uses its weight and sheer kinetic force to reach deeply buried targets and then explode. The bomb is currently delivered only by the B-2 stealth bomber, which is only found in the American arsenal.
If deployed in the attack, it would be the first combat use of the weapon.
This undated photo handout picture shows a US B-2 bomber in flight at an undisclosed location. B-2 bombers were used in early Sunday鈥檚 bombing of Iranian nuclear sites, US officials confirmed. (USAF/AFP)
The bomb carries a conventional warhead, and is believed to be able to penetrate about 200 feet (61 meters) below the surface before exploding, and the bombs can be dropped one after another, effectively drilling deeper and deeper with each successive blast.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that Iran is producing highly enriched uranium at Fordow, raising the possibility that nuclear material could be released into the area if the GBU-57 A/B were used to hit the facility.
Previous Israeli strikes at another Iranian nuclear site, Natanz, on a centrifuge site have caused contamination only at the site itself, not the surrounding area, the IAEA has said.
Trump鈥檚 decision for direct US military intervention comes after his administration made an unsuccessful two-month push 鈥 including with high-level, direct negotiations with the Iranians 鈥 aimed at persuading Tehran to curb its nuclear program.
For months, Trump said he was dedicated to a diplomatic push to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions. And he twice 鈥 in April and again in late May 鈥 persuaded Netanyahu to hold off on military action against Iran and give diplomacy more time.
The US in recent days has been shifting military aircraft and warships into and around the Middle East to protect Israel and US bases from Iranian attacks.
All the while, Trump has gone from publicly expressing hope that the moment could be a 鈥渟econd chance鈥 for Iran to make a deal to delivering explicit threats on Khamenei and making calls for Tehran鈥檚 unconditional surrender.
鈥淲e know exactly where the so-called 鈥楽upreme Leader鈥 is hiding,鈥 Trump said in a social media posting. 鈥淗e is an easy target, but is safe there 鈥 We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.鈥
The military showdown with Iran comes seven years after Trump withdrew the US from the Obama-administration brokered agreement in 2018, calling it the 鈥渨orst deal ever.鈥
The 2015 deal, signed by Iran, US and other world powers, created a long-term, comprehensive nuclear agreement that limited Tehran鈥檚 enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Trump decried the Obama-era deal for giving Iran too much in return for too little, because the agreement did not cover Iran鈥檚 non-nuclear malign behavior.
Trump has bristled at criticism from some of his MAGA faithful, including conservative pundit Tucker Carlson, who have suggested that further US involvement would be a betrayal to supporters who were drawn to his promise to end US involvement in expensive and endless wars.
Israel says preparing for a lengthy war
Israel 鈥榮 military said Saturday it was preparing for the possibility of a lengthy war, while Iran鈥檚 foreign minister warned that US military involvement 鈥渨ould be very, very dangerous for everyone.鈥
The prospect of a wider war threatened, too. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said they would resume attacks on US vessels in the Red Sea if the Trump administration joins Israel鈥檚 military campaign. The Houthis paused such attacks in May under a deal with the US.
The US ambassador to Israel announced the US has begun 鈥渁ssisted departure flights,鈥 the first from Israel since the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, that sparked the war in Gaza.
Israel鈥檚 military said it struck an Iranian nuclear research facility overnight and killed three senior Iranian commanders in pursuit of its goal to destroy Iran鈥檚 nuclear program. Smoke rose near a mountain in Isfahan, where the province鈥檚 deputy governor for security affairs, Akbar Salehi, confirmed Israeli strikes damaged the facility.

Trump wins immediate praise from Republicans
Congressional Republicans 鈥 and at least one Democrat 鈥 immediately praised President Donald Trump after he said Saturday evening that the US military bombed three sites in Iran.
鈥淲ell done, President Trump,鈥 Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina posted on X. Texas Sen. John Cornyn called it a 鈥渃ourageous and correct decision.鈥 Alabama Sen. Katie Britt called the bombings 鈥渟trong and surgical.鈥
Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin posted: 鈥淎merica first, always.鈥
The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, said Trump 鈥渉as made a deliberate 鈥 and correct 鈥 decision to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian regime.鈥
Wicker posted on X that 鈥渨e now have very serious choices ahead to provide security for our citizens and our allies.鈥
The quick endorsements of stepped up US involvement in Iran came after Trump had publicly mulled the strikes for days and many congressional Republicans had cautiously said they thought he would make the right decision.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, was briefed ahead of the strikes on Saturday, according to people familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it.
Johnson said in a statement that the military operations 鈥渟hould serve as a clear reminder to our adversaries and allies that President Trump means what he says.鈥
