Why 萝莉视频鈥檚 Farasan Islands are a haven for flamingos听
  • Thanks to conservation efforts, the Farasan Islands remain an important migratory waystation for the greater flamingo听
  • From habitat protection to anti-poaching measures, 萝莉视频 is safeguarding the future of this beloved avian species

RIYADH: In the turquoise waters off 萝莉视频鈥檚 Red Sea coast lies a hidden gem that is quickly gaining recognition as a sanctuary for one of the world鈥檚 most charismatic birds: The greater flamingo.

The Farasan Islands, an archipelago off the southwestern coast of 萝莉视频, boast a biodiverse ecosystem that has attracted these elegant creatures for decades.

While the Kingdom is often associated with desert landscapes, the Farasan Islands present a stark contrast 鈥 a lush haven that plays host to thousands of migratory birds each year, including the iconic flamingo.

萝莉视频, through its National Center for Wildlife, or NCW, has undertaken efforts to conserve and protect its greater flamingo population as part of a broader commitment to preserve its natural heritage and promote biodiversity in line with Vision 2030.

The NCW, in collaboration with local authorities, has implemented environmental regulations and established protected habitats to ensure the safety and sustainability of these migratory birds.

These include a ban on hunting and the designation of wetland areas as protected zones, and measures to prevent collisions with high-voltage power lines.

DID YOUKNOW?

鈥 Flamingos are social birds that live in large colonies often consisting of thousands of birds.

鈥 They have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years in the wild and even longer in captivity.

鈥 Flamingos have a distinctive courtship display that involves movements and vocalizations to attract potential mates.

These efforts are seen as crucial in maintaining the delicate balance of the Farasan Islands鈥 ecosystem, which supports not only flamingos but also a variety of other wildlife species.

The Farasan Islands are one of the largest island groups in the Red Sea, situated about 50 km off the coast of Jazan.

The archipelago consists of more than 170 islands, characterized by their coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds, which provide essential habitats for a diverse range of marine and terrestrial species.

Flamingos are attracted to the shallow, saline lagoons of the Farasan Islands, where they can feed on a diet rich in shrimp, algae and other small organisms. More than 4,000 flamingos have been observed there during the migration season.

鈥淭hey begin to appear along the coasts of the Kingdom and in the Farasan Islands at the start of winter, by the end of November, and continue until the end of winter,鈥 Mohammed Shobrak, a bird expert and adviser to the NCW, told Arab News.

鈥淭heir numbers vary during the migration season in the Farasan Islands. They are more commonly found along the coasts than in the islands.鈥澨

The islands offer a relatively safe haven for the flamingos, with minimal human disturbance and ample space for the birds to roost and forage.

The greater flamingo is the largest and most widespread species of flamingo, found across Africa, southern Europe and South Asia. These birds are known for their striking pink plumage, which they acquire from their diet.

鈥淭he substance responsible for this color is beta-carotene, which is found in algae and crustaceans,鈥 Shobrak said.

鈥淰ariations in the levels of this substance in food across different regions may cause color differences, and the physiology of the species may also contribute to these variations among flamingo birds that share the same types of food.

鈥淎dditionally, another behavioral study on groups in the Americas indicates that birds with brighter pink-orange colors tend to be more aggressive while feeding.鈥澨

萝莉视频鈥檚 efforts to protect the greater flamingo and other wildlife on the Farasan Islands are part of a larger commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Kingdom has made significant strides in recent years to enhance its conservation policies, including the establishment of protected areas and the enforcement of strict environmental regulations.

Farasan Islands is also some endangered species, including gazelles and green turtles.

These measures are in line with 萝莉视频鈥檚 Vision 2030 social reform and economic diversification agenda, which seeks to promote sustainable development and preserve the nation鈥檚 natural resources for future generations.

In addition to protecting flamingos, 萝莉视频 has taken steps to conserve other endangered species on the Farasan Islands, including gazelles and green turtles.

The islands are home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, dugongs and a wide range of fish species, all of which benefit from the Kingdom鈥檚 conservation initiatives.

Conservation efforts, coupled with increased awareness and education, are helping to ensure that flamingoes and other species will continue to grace the shores of the islands for years to come.

RIYADH: 萝莉视频 expressed on Sunday its 鈥済reat concern鈥 following US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, according to a statement by the foreign ministry on X.

The Saudi ministry statement 鈥渁ffirmed its condemnation and denunciation of violating the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressing the need to exert all efforts to exercise restraint, de-escalate, and avoid escalation.鈥

The Kingdom also called on the international community to boost efforts in such 鈥渉ighly sensitive circumstances鈥 to reach a political solution to end the crisis.

UAE

The United Arab Emirates urged on Sunday an immediate halt to escalation to 鈥渁void serious repercussions鈥 in the region following strikes by the US on Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities.

It warned that such actions could lead the region to 鈥渘ew levels of instability,鈥 according to a statement from the foreign ministry.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed held phone calls with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as well as the leaders of Kuwait and Qatar to discuss the latest developments following the attacks on Iran.

The conversations focused on the need to de-escalate tensions and restore regional stability, with all sides urging restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, Emirates News Agency reported.

Egypt

Egypt has expressed deep concern over the recent developments in Iran, warning of the risks posed by a rapidly escalating situation that could threaten the security and stability of the entire region.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt said the ongoing escalation could have serious consequences for both regional and international peace.

The statement stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of states and adhering to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Egypt called on all concerned parties to exercise restraint, prioritize dialogue, and pursue peaceful solutions, emphasizing that resorting to military options would only lead to greater instability.

Qatar

Qatar, host of the biggest US military base in the Middle East, on Sunday said it feared serious repercussions after US air strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran.

The foreign ministry 鈥渨arns that the current dangerous escalation in the region may lead to catastrophic consequences at both the regional and international levels鈥, a statement said.

鈥淚t calls on all parties to exercise wisdom, restraint, and to avoid further escalation.鈥

Oman

Oman, which was mediating nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, on Sunday strongly condemned US strikes on nuclear sites in Iran.

The Gulf sultanate 鈥渆xpresses deep concern, denunciation and condemnation of the escalation resulting from the direct air strikes launched by the United States on sites in the Islamic Republic of Iran鈥, the official Oman News Agency said.

Lebanon

Lebanese president Joseph Aoun, in statement released by the Lebanese Presidency on X, meanwhile said: 鈥淟ebanon, its leadership, parties, and people, are aware today, more than ever before, that it has paid a heavy price for the wars that erupted on its land and in the region. It is unwilling to pay more, and there is no national interest in doing so, especially since the cost of these wars was and will be greater than its ability to bear.鈥

鈥淭he bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities raises fears of an escalation of tensions that could threaten security and stability in more than one region and country.

鈥淭he President of the Republic calls for restraint and the launch of constructive and serious negotiations to restore stability to the countries of the region and avoid further killing and destruction,鈥 the statement added.

Iraq

Iraq warned on Sunday that the US attacks on its neighbor Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities threaten peace and stability in the Middle East.

Iraq 鈥渆xpresses its deep concern and strong condemnation of the targeting of nuclear facilities鈥 in Iran, government spokesperson Basim Alawadi said. 鈥淭his military escalation constitutes a grave threat to peace and security in the Middle East and poses serious risks to regional stability,鈥 he added.

UN

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres meanwhile slammed US President Donald Trump鈥檚 decision to order US military strikes on Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities as a 鈥渄angerous escalation.鈥

鈥淚 am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge 鈥 and a direct threat to international peace and security,鈥 he said in a statement.

鈥淭here is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control 鈥 with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world,鈥 he said.

READ: Transcript of Trump鈥檚 speech on US strikes on Iran

Guterres called on member states to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and other rules of international law.

鈥淎t this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos. There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy.  The only hope is peace,鈥 he said.

Other countries began reacting Sunday with calls for diplomacy and words of caution:

Turkiye

Turkiye warned Sunday the US strike on Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities risked escalating the Iran-Israel conflict to a global level that could have 鈥渃atastrophic鈥 consequences.

鈥淭he ongoing developments could cause the regional conflict to escalate to a global level. We do not want this catastrophic scenario to come to life,鈥 the foreign ministry indicating Turkiye was 鈥渄eeply concerned about the possible consequences.鈥

India

India鈥檚 prime minister Narendra Modi said on X that spoke with Irans President Masoud Pezeshkian: 鈥淲e discussed in detail about the current situation.

鈥淓xpressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.鈥

Pakistan

Pakistan, in a statement, said it 鈥渃ondemns the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities which follow the series of attacks by Israel. We are gravely concerned at the possible further escalation of tensions in the region.鈥

鈥淲e reiterate that these attacks violate all norms of international law and that Iran has the legitimate right to defend itself under the UN Charter.

鈥淭he unprecedented escalation of tension and violence, owing to ongoing aggression against Iran is deeply disturbing. Any further escalation of tensions will have severely damaging implications for the region and beyond.鈥

Russia

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia鈥檚 Security Council, said on Sunday that US President Donald Trump had started a new war for the US by attacking Iran.

鈥淭rump, who came in as a peacemaker president, has started a new war for the US,鈥 Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel.

UK

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on Iran to 鈥渞eturn to the negotiating table鈥 over its nuclear ambitions after the US carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

鈥淚ran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat,鈥 Starmer said on X, adding that 鈥渟tability in the region is a priority鈥.

鈥淲e call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.鈥

France

French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Sunday that France had 鈥渢aken note with concern of the strikes carried out last night by the United States of America against three sites in Iran's nuclear program.鈥

He also said that France was neither involved in these strikes nor in their planning.

鈥淲e urge the parties to exercise restraint in order to avoid any escalation that could lead to an extension of the conflict,鈥 the statement said.

鈥淚n this context, our priority is to ensure the safety of our agents and nationals, as well as that of our interests and partners in the region,鈥 it added.

France has repeatedly expressed its firm opposition to Iran gaining access to nuclear weapons.

鈥淔rance is convinced that a lasting solution to this issue requires a negotiated solution within the framework of the Treaty of Non-Proliferation. We remain ready to contribute to this in conjunction with our partners,鈥 the statement said.

鈥淔rance has taken due note of the statement by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which confirms at this stage that no high level of radiation has been detected.鈥

European Union

The European Union鈥檚 top diplomat said Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon but she urged those involved in the conflict to show restraint.

鈥淚 urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table and prevent further escalation,鈥 EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a post on social media.

Kallas will chair a meeting of the 27-nation bloc鈥檚 foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, with the Israel-Iran war high on the agenda.

New Zealand

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters urged 鈥渁ll parties to return to talks.鈥

He wouldn鈥檛 tell reporters Sunday whether New Zealand supported President Trump鈥檚 actions, saying they had only just happened.

The three-time foreign minister said the crisis is 鈥渢he most serious I鈥檝e ever dealt with鈥 and that 鈥渃ritical further escalation is avoided.鈥

鈥淒iplomacy will deliver a more enduring resolution than further military action,鈥 he said.

Italy

Italy鈥檚 foreign minister Antonio Tajani, on state broadcaster RAI, said: 鈥淣ow we hope that, after this attack, which caused massive damage to nuclear weapons production and posed a threat to the entire region, a de-escalation can begin and Iran can sit down at the negotiating table.鈥

China

A flash commentary from China鈥檚 government-run media asked whether the US is repeating 鈥渋ts Iraq mistake in Iran.鈥

The online piece by CGTN, the foreign-language arm of the state broadcaster, said the US strikes mark a dangerous turning point.

鈥淗istory has repeatedly shown that military interventions in the Middle East often produce unintended consequences, including prolonged conflicts and regional destabilization,鈥 it said, citing the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

It said a measured, diplomatic approach that prioritizes dialogue over military confrontation offers the best hope for stability in the Middle East.

Japan

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters Sunday it was crucial to calm the situation as soon as possible, adding that the Iranian nuclear weapons development also must be prevented.

Ishiba, asked if he supports the US attacks on Iran, declined to comment. He was speaking to reporters after an emergency meeting with officials from key ministries over the US military action.

Ishiba said officials are still assessing details and doing their utmost to protect the safety of the Japanese nationals in Iran, Israel and elsewhere in the region.

While the US attacks on Iran do not affect Japan鈥檚 stable energy supply for the time being, Ishiba said, he has instructed officials to 鈥渨atch the development with a sense of urgency and take every precaution鈥 to prevent an increase in oil and utility costs ahead of the summer when energy demand rises.

South Korea

South Korea鈥檚 presidential office said it would hold an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the security and economic ramifications of the US strikes and potential South Korean responses.

Australia

Australia, which shuttered its embassy in Tehran and evacuated staff Friday, continued to push for a diplomatic end to the conflict.

鈥淲e have been clear that Iran鈥檚 nuclear and ballistic missile program has been a threat to international peace and security,鈥 a government official said in a written statement. 鈥淲e note the US President鈥檚 statement that now is the time for peace.鈥

鈥淭he security situation in the region is highly volatile. We continue to call for de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy.鈥

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was predictably all praises for Trump鈥檚 decision.

鈥淵our bold decision to target Iran鈥檚 nuclear facilities, with the awesome and righteous might of the United States, will change history,鈥 he said in a video message directed at the American president.

Netanyahu said the US 鈥渉as done what no other country on earth could do.鈥

Israel鈥檚 Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon also thanked Trump for his 鈥渉istoric decision to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Today, President Trump proved that 鈥楴ever Again鈥 is not just a slogan 鈥 it鈥檚 a policy.鈥

In Washington, Congressional Republicans 鈥 and at least one Democrat 鈥 immediately praised Trump after he announced his fateful attack order.

鈥淲ell done, President Trump,鈥 Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina posted on X. Texas Sen. John Cornyn called it a 鈥渃ourageous and correct decision.鈥 Alabama Sen. Katie Britt called the bombings 鈥渟trong and surgical.鈥

Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin posted: 鈥淎merica first, always.鈥

The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, said Trump 鈥渉as made a deliberate 鈥 and correct 鈥 decision to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian regime.鈥

Wicker posted on X that 鈥渨e now have very serious choices ahead to provide security for our citizens and our allies.鈥

The quick endorsements of stepped up US involvement in Iran came after Trump had publicly mulled the strikes for days and many congressional Republicans had cautiously said they thought he would make the right decision. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Saturday evening that 鈥渁s we take action tonight to ensure a nuclear weapon remains out of reach for Iran, I stand with President Trump and pray for the American troops and personnel in harm鈥檚 way.鈥

Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, were briefed ahead of the strikes on Saturday, according to people familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it.

Johnson said in a statement that the military operations 鈥渟hould serve as a clear reminder to our adversaries and allies that President Trump means what he says.鈥

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford, R-Arkansas, said he had also been in touch with the White House and 鈥淚 am grateful to the US servicemembers who carried out these precise and successful strikes.鈥

Breaking from many of his Democratic colleagues, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, an outspoken supporter of Israel, also praised the attacks on Iran. 鈥淎s I鈥檝e long maintained, this was the correct move by @POTUS,鈥 he posted. 鈥淚ran is the world鈥檚 leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities.鈥

Both parties have seen splits in recent days over the prospect of striking Iran. Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican and a longtime opponent of US involvement in foreign wars, posted on X after Trump announced the attacks that 鈥淭his is not Constitutional.鈥

Many Democrats have maintained that Congress should have a say. The Senate was scheduled to vote as soon as this week on a resolution by Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine requiring congressional approval before the US declared war on Iran or took specific military action.

Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House intelligence panel, posted on X after Trump鈥檚 announcement: 鈥淎ccording to the Constitution we are both sworn to defend, my attention to this matter comes BEFORE bombs fall. Full stop.鈥
