Making AI an ally in a fast changing workplace

For decades, software was centered around data. Initially, this meant digitizing mountains of paper records, storing them in databases, and retrieving them more efficiently. Tasks that once required sifting through file cabinets, mainframes, or early enterprise systems were then streamlined by technology.

Still, the bulk of real work — whether in a travel agency, a human resources department, or a hospital — continued to be handled by humans. These early digital tools functioned as advanced filing cabinets, saving space and time, but still relied on people to interpret and act on the data they contained.

Then came the cloud era. Large servers maintained offsite replaced the need for clunky hardware in office basements, making information more accessible and less expensive to manage. Yet, this convenience did not dramatically reduce the need for human labor. Even with cloud-based software, professionals continued to handle everything from customer support queries to accounts receivable.

The digital platforms served mainly as centralized repositories; employees were still opening emails, typing responses, making phone calls, and moving information from one system to another. In short, software stored data more efficiently, but it did not fundamentally alter the fact that people were doing the heavy lifting of day-to-day operations.

That is changing. The wave we are witnessing now goes beyond merely adding features or improving convenience. Artificial intelligence is evolving from a tool that primarily organizes and processes data into one that performs tasks traditionally handled by people.

Just a few years ago, the idea of an AI system managing legal paperwork, responding to support emails, tracking payment schedules, or scheduling appointments in multiple languages might have sounded far-fetched. Yet, these capabilities already exist in prototype or limited-release forms, and many organizations find them particularly appealing because AI effectively fills labor gaps.

The difference this time is both economic and practical on a large scale. In the past, software accounted for only a small percentage of most companies’ budgets — a helpful tool to boost employee productivity. Meanwhile, labor costs, benefits, and training far outweighed expenses for databases or office software. When an organization grew, it needed to hire more staff to handle the increased workload.

AI is changing the equation. Instead of only one person answering a number of calls or emails daily, AI can operate around the clock at a fraction of the cost. This shift makes previously unthinkable applications of software not only possible but highly appealing from a business perspective.

This is especially evident in customer support and communication roles. Early chatbots were often clumsy and had frustrating interfaces, only handling the simplest queries. In contrast, new-generation models — trained on massive datasets — can now generate coherent, context-aware responses in real-time.

Instead of functioning as bare-bones frequently-asked-questions systems, these AI agents can learn the nuances of a company’s product line, reference past customer interactions, and adapt their tone to suit different audiences. In many cases, they handle the bulk of mundane interactions independently. Humans now step in only for exceptions or complex issues, effectively becoming “managers” of AI rather than the frontline agents.

The real opportunity lies in combining AI’s labor capabilities with human empathy and insight.

This shift from data to labor extends well beyond customer service. In healthcare, AI can process standard patient forms, allowing nurses and administrative staff to focus more on bedside care. In finance, AI can chase overdue invoices, notify individuals who fall behind on payments, and even negotiate payment plans. In compliance, AI-driven systems can flag suspicious transactions and prepare preliminary reports for human review. In countless other fields, such as insurance underwriting, market research, and creative brainstorming, AI is taking on core responsibilities that were once handled by entire teams.

Naturally, this raises significant questions about employment and skills. If software replaces much of operational work, what happens to those roles?

The history of technological change shows that while some jobs are lost, new opportunities often emerge in areas where technology falls short. When software digitized record-keeping, it didn’t eliminate HR departments; instead, it made them leaner and shifted staff responsibilities from managing paper forms to more strategic, human-centered tasks.

AI promises a similar reallocation. Tasks requiring complex problem-solving, genuine empathy, relationship-building, or physical presence and advanced judgment will remain within human expertise. However, it would be naive to assume this transition will be painless or that new roles will naturally appear for everyone. Success will require active planning, reskilling, and a willingness to redefine roles within organizations.

What sets this wave apart — and makes it potentially more disruptive — is the sheer depth and range of tasks AI can now perform. It is no longer confined to predictable, mechanical processes.

Modern AI systems can analyze nuanced language, generate personalized content, and adapt to new information in real time. This makes them more than just a time-saving device; they become the backbone of operations where speed, consistency, and scale are paramount. Such capability compels organizations to weigh whether to pay people for tasks that AI can handle faster and at lower cost.

At the same time, it is crucial to remember that humans possess inventive, relational, and interpretive qualities that AI cannot replicate. No model — however advanced — can fully capture the warmth of genuine human interaction or the creativity born from lived experience and social context. The real opportunity lies in combining AI’s labor capabilities with human empathy and insight. Freed from repetitive duties, employees can dedicate more energy to strategic thinking, customer relationships, and, ultimately, innovation.

Software was once focused solely on managing data, not on performing the labor behind it. AI has changed that. Tasks once handled by staff, from administrative duties to client follow-ups, can now be managed by intelligent systems at scale. Companies that embrace this shift thoughtfully and responsibly are likely to outpace those that hold onto legacy models. This is not just another upgrade or a feature set; this is a fundamental rethinking of how work itself is accomplished.

Embracing this transition requires building the right frameworks, safeguards, and strategies to make AI an ally, not a threat — transforming what was once a tool for data into a powerful partner in getting things done.

WASHINGTON: At a moment of growing international alarm about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, more US adults view Israel’s military action in the Palestinian territory as excessive than at the beginning of the war, according to a new poll.
About half of Americans say the military response from Israel in the Gaza Strip has “gone too far,” according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s up from November 2023, when 40 percent said Israel’s military action had gone too far. That AP-NORC poll was conducted shortly after the Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel.
But at the same time, Americans overall, particularly Republicans, are less likely to say that negotiating a ceasefire should be a high priority for the US government than they were just a few months ago when the US was holding ceasefire talks with Hamas.
The shift in American attitudes about Israel’s actions comes as Israel begins an expanded ground offensive on Gaza City. Israel is facing increased international scrutiny over its conduct in Gaza, with a team of independent experts commissioned by the UN’s Human Rights Council this week announcing it has concluded that Israel is committing genocide.
“The level of innocent women and children suffering,” said Renee Hollier, of Lafayette, Louisiana, who described herself as a political independent and mother of a toddler. 
“There’s just no justification for this kind of suffering to continue.”
The poll found a bipartisan uptick in Americans finding Israel’s military response has “gone too far.”
About 7 in 10 Democrats say this now, up from 58 percent in November 2023.  And roughly half of independents say the same, compared with about 4 in 10 in the earlier measure. 
Republicans have also moved slightly, from 18 percent to 24 percent.
Concern about overreach from Israel was high in January 2024, when 50 percent of US adults said Israel had “gone too far,” but that fell slightly as the war continued.
And 45 percent of US adults now say it’s “extremely” or “very” important for the US to provide humanitarian relief to Palestinians in Gaza, similar to Americans’ views at the start of the war but up slightly from 41 percent in March.
Miguel Martinez, 55, of Miami, said it remains critical for the Republican administration to prioritize humanitarian relief even as it backs the Israeli military’s effort to defeat Hamas. 
Martinez supports Israel’s aim to defeat Hamas, but he’s concerned that the conflict is dragging on.
“Not everyone there is the enemy,” said Martinez, a Republican who said he broadly approves of Trump’s handling of the conflict. “Those people need help.”
In interviews, Americans across the political spectrum were dour about the prospects of the US mediating a lasting ceasefire. 
“There’s an all-or-nothing attitude on both sides,” Martinez said of Israel and Hamas. 
“Any resolution, any ceasefire, it’s hard to see it being anything more than temporary.”
Democrats are more likely to prioritize negotiations on an independent Palestinian state
Larry Kapenstein, 71, a Democrat from Middletown, Pennsylvania, said he’s worried about the conflict’s long-term ramifications for Israel’s economy and standing in the world.
“I side with Israel, and I think they’re in the right in this, but I think Netanyahu has just taken this too far,” Kapenstein said. “There’s got to be a better way.”
About 3 in 10 US adults said it is “extremely” or “very” important to negotiate the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, unchanged from January 2024. But that belief is especially pronounced among Democrats: About half now say this is highly important, up from 41 percent in 2024. That compares with 19 percent of independents and 14 percent of Republicans.
The survey also found slightly less support for military aid for Israel.
About 2 in 10 US adults said it is “extremely” or “very” important for the US to provide aid to Israel’s military to fight Hamas, down from 36 percent at the war’s start. The decline has been particularly dramatic among Democrats, from 30 percent at the war’s beginning to 15 percent now.

GENEVA: Sudan has seen a significant rise in civilian killings during the first half of this year due to growing ethnic violence, largely in the western region of Darfur, the UN human rights office said on Friday.

The conflict that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has unleashed waves of ethnically-driven killings, caused mass displacement, and created what the UN has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
At least 3,384 civilians were killed between January and June, mostly in Darfur, according to a new report by the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights. The figure is equivalent to nearly 80 percent of the civilian casualties in Sudan documented last year. 
Throughout the war, casualty numbers have been hard to track because of the collapse of local health services, fighting, and communications breakdowns, among other reasons.
“Every day we are receiving more reports of horrors on the ground,” OHCHR Sudan representative Li Fung said in Geneva.
The majority of killings resulted from artillery shelling as well as air and drone strikes in densely populated areas, the report said.
It noted many deaths occurred during the RSF’s offensive on the city of El-Fasher, the last holdout of its rivals in Darfur, as well as on the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for displaced people in April.
At least 990 civilians were killed in summary executions in the first half of the year, the report found, with the number between February and April tripling. That was driven mainly by a surge in Khartoum after the army and allied fighters in late March recaptured the city previously controlled by the RSF, the OHCHR said.
“One witness who observed SAF search operations in civilian neighborhoods in East Nile, Khartoum, between March and April, said that he saw children as young as 14 or 15 years of age, accused of being RSF members, summarily killed,” OHCHR spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said.
Fung said ethnicity was a motivating factor for violence, which she described as very concerning.
She explained that certain ethnic communities were being targeted because they are associated with the leadership of the SAF and RSF, building upon decades of discrimination and division between different groups and identities in the diverse nation.
Both sides in Sudan’s war have repeatedly denied deliberately attacking civilians.
The humanitarian situation in Sudan was dire and worsening, said Patrick Youssef, Africa regional director for the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
Sudan faces its worst cholera outbreak in four years across the country, with 2,500 cases reported in Khartoum since June, he said.
“We really pray that it’s contained within days or weeks ... My worst nightmare would be a bigger spread in Khartoum, if the populations want to return back to Khartoum,” he said.

ALGIERS: Luca Zidane, the 27-year-old goalkeeper and son of French football great Zinedine Zidane, has switched his sporting nationality from France to Algeria, the Algerian Football Federation said on Friday.
“FIFA officially granted... goalkeeper Luca Zinedine Zidane authorization to represent the Algerian national team,” FAF said in a statement.
FIFA’s “change of association platform” showed the decision was dated on Friday.


Luca Zidane represented France at youth levels and currently plays for Granada in Spain’s second division.
Since he never made the step up to the French national team, he remained eligible to play for Algeria, the country of his paternal grandparents.
The North Africans have qualified for the 2025 African Cup of Nations, set to begin on December 21 in Morocco.
They are also leading their World Cup qualifying Group G with 19 points, needing either a win against Somalia or draw with Uganda next month to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Zidane also played for Real Madrid’s reserve team after working his way up from its youth academy, which he joined in 2004.
He debuted with the main team in their last league game in the 2017-2018 season and was the third-choice goalkeeper when Real won their 13th Champions League title in 2018.
Although Zinedine Zidane was born in Marseille, his family was originally from a small village in Bejaia, some 250 kilometers east of Algiers.

MUNICH: The Club World Cup may have hampered some clubs’ pre-season preparations but for Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany the month-long tournament helped with a quick and seamless integration of new signings.
The Bavarians had new arrivals Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof in the squad for the June 14 to July 13 tournament in the United States, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Paris St. Germain.
Several teams, including Borussia Dortmund, have said they felt the impact of a shorter-than-usual pre-season training period because of their participation in the Club World Cup.
The tournament left several top European teams with only four weeks to rest and prepare for the new season. Most top European leagues usually end in late May.
“The Club World Cup certainly helped in the integration of newcomers,” Kompany told a press conference on Friday ahead of Saturday’s league game at Hoffenheim.
“There is this feeling that players like Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof have been here longer (than they have been).
“Maybe it has to do with the fact that we were living together for an entire month.
“We don’t really know how the Club World Cup will influence the season but we stayed together for a month and that is rare for a club. If we can use that then we will,” he added.
Whatever influence it may have had the champions have hit the ground running, winning all their domestic and European matches and topping the Bundesliga with nine points after three games.
They made a winning start in the Champions League after forward Harry Kane scored once in either half to guide Bayern to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in their league phase opener on Wednesday.
“But to grow more together we have to win against Hoffenheim,” Kompany said. “We are playing well, scoring goals and have worked hard to deserve this momentum. We have to keep working in order to maintain this momentum.”
