How climate change is disrupting the Earth鈥檚 water cycle

How climate change is disrupting the Earth鈥檚 water cycle
  • Flash floods worldwide have claimed lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed infrastructure, with global warming seen as a key driver
  • Land-use changes, like deforestation and urbanization, increase water run-off, altering rainfall patterns and water distribution

RIYADH: From Argentina and South Sudan to Spain, Indonesia, and even 萝莉视频, recent episodes of flash flooding around the world have cost numerous lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed infrastructure.

What is causing this flurry of flash flooding? Many factors come into play, from poor urban planning to improper resource management, but some argue the major culprit is climate change.

鈥淣umerous environmental factors affect the water cycle, but temperature is perhaps the most important one,鈥 Hylke Beck, assistant professor of earth science and engineering at 萝莉视频鈥檚 King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, told Arab News.

鈥淓arth鈥檚 water cycle is all about movement. Water is constantly shifting between the ocean, land, and atmosphere,鈥 Beck continued. Water rises as it evaporates, after which it cools, condenses into clouds, and then falls as rain or snow. Some of that water runs off into rivers and oceans, some infiltrates the ground, becoming groundwater, and some is taken up by plants.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a continuous cycle that keeps water moving and sustains us and other organisms,鈥 Beck explained.

But what role does temperature play in the process? Warmer air holds more moisture. For every degree the planet warms up, the atmosphere can store approximately seven percent more water.

This extra moisture means that, when conditions are suitable, storms have a larger water supply to work with, resulting in heavier rainfall.

The Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology states that from 1979 to 2019, 萝莉视频鈥檚 climate has warmed by 2.1 degrees Celsius 鈥 almost three times the global average.

At the other end of the extreme, shifts in the water cycle have also led to more droughts, since higher temperatures also accelerate water evaporation, meaning more moisture is 鈥減ulled鈥 from the ground at a faster rate. This dries out soil and makes droughts worse if there is not enough rain to replace it.

Longer dry spells and less frequent but heavier rainfall discourages crop growth and can lead to desertification.

In the Kingdom, stronger winds and drier soil causes more frequent and harsher sandstorms, harming the country鈥檚 agriculture and air quality. Air pollution can also change how clouds form and impact the amount of rainfall.

鈥淚n some places, increased evaporation can lead to more rainfall, but not necessarily where it鈥檚 needed,鈥 said Beck. 鈥淪ome regions get soaked, while others dry out even more.鈥

Depending on where and how the moisture moves, warming can intensify both extreme rainfall and drying.

Changes in land also play an important role. Cutting down trees reduces transpiration, the urbanization of cities increases run-off, and damming rivers changes the direction of water flow.

Then there are also natural factors which can exacerbate man-made influences.

鈥淟arge-scale climate patterns like El Nino and La Nina (alter) where rain falls and for how long,鈥 said Beck.

Both of those patterns are part of a natural cycle called El Nino-Southern Oscillation, El Nino is the phase in which the Pacific Ocean鈥檚 surface becomes warmer than usual. La Nina is the phase in which they are cooler. Both lead to changes in global weather, causing heavier rainfall in some areas and dryer conditions in others.

鈥淐limate change is essentially throwing the whole system out of balance,鈥 said Beck. 鈥淭he result is more extremes 鈥 wetter wet seasons, drier dry seasons, and more unpredictable weather generally.鈥

Beck added that organizations like World Weather Attribution do crucial work in the field of climate monitoring by analyzing how climate change influences extreme events and how human activities shape the Earth鈥檚 water cycle.

  • Mashaer completes 2,154 trips between Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat
  • Dedicated to serving Hajj pilgrims, it runs for only 7 days every year

MAKKAH: A total of 1.87 million passengers used the Mashaer Metro Train to travel between Makkah鈥檚 holy sites during this year鈥檚 Hajj, according to 萝莉视频 Railways.

From Dhul Hijjah 7 (June 3) until the end of the Days of Tashreeq (June 9), there were 2,154 trips between the stations of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat, the railway agency said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

The operational plan for the Mashaer transport system during Hajj 2025 had five main phases, with the first one from June 3 to 4 transporting over 27,000 passengers across all stations.

The second phase moved 282,000 pilgrims from Mina to Arafat, the third transported 294,000 from Arafat to Muzdalifah, and the fourth moved over 349,000 from Muzdalifah to Mina.

鈥淭he final phase, which lasted until sunset on the last day of Tashreeq, recorded the movement of over 920,000 passengers to and from Mina 3 (Jamarat) station,鈥 the SPA said.

萝莉视频 Railways CEO Bashar AlMalik attributed the successful completion of the operational plan to extensive preparatory work, including simulation exercises and trial runs by the agency in coordination with operational and security agencies.

  • Al-Dahas highlighted the significance of Namirah Mosque in Arafat, where the Prophet delivered his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage

MAKKAH: In Makkah, the holiest city in Islam, spiritual significance extends far beyond the Grand Mosque. Scattered throughout the city are historic mosques that witnessed pivotal moments in Islamic history.

Yet, amid the dense crowds and the rapid pace of modern development, many pilgrims and Umrah performers remain unaware of these sacred sites, quietly tucked away within the city鈥檚 expanding urban landscape.

Fawaz Al-Dahas, professor of history at Umm Al-Qura University, said that Makkah is home to several mosques of profound historical and religious value, yet they remain largely overlooked, receiving neither the media attention nor the organized religious visits they merit.

Al-Dahas highlighted the significance of Namirah Mosque in Arafat, where the Prophet delivered his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage. He said that this mosque was not merely a physical structure, but a sacred site where the foundational principles of Islam were proclaimed. He also referenced the Bay鈥檃h Mosque in Mina, which commemorates the pivotal moment when the Ansar pledged allegiance to the Prophet, paving the way for the Hijrah and the establishment of the Islamic state.

According to Al-Dahas, the importance of these mosques transcends their geographic locations, reflecting their profound political and religious significance in Islamic history.

Al-Dahas shed light on Al-Rayah Mosque: 鈥淟ocated in the Jarwal neighborhood, where the Prophet鈥檚 banner was raised on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, a powerful symbol of victory tempered by forgiveness.鈥

He also drew attention to Al-Hudaibiya Mosque, situated west of Makkah, where the historic Bay鈥檃t Al-Ridwan pledge took place, an event referenced in the Holy Qur鈥檃n. He said that while the mosque still stands on the original site of the Treaty of Hudaibiya, it remains largely unknown, with few visitors aware of its exact location.

Mohammed Al-Joud, a Hajj and Umrah specialist, said that these mosques were not merely historical structures, but vital educational landmarks that enrich a pilgrim鈥檚 understanding of the deeper spiritual dimensions of Hajj. He pointed to Al-Khayf Mosque in Mina, where the Prophet and prophets before him are believed to have prayed, as a powerful symbol of the continuity of prophethood: 鈥淵et, many pilgrims remain unaware of its significance outside the Hajj season.鈥

Al-Joud also highlighted Al-Mashar Al-Haram Mosque in Muzdalifah, which is mentioned in the Holy Qur鈥檃n, emphasizing that awareness of such sacred sites bridges the rituals of Hajj with their Qur鈥檃nic and historical roots, enhancing the spiritual journey.

Al-Joud also drew attention to Al-Kabsh Mosque in Mina, linked to the story of the sacrifice of Ismail. He explained that the mosque symbolizes the values of sacrifice and obedience, yet remains largely overlooked in media coverage and excluded from most pilgrimage programs. He described it as an essential part of a broader, interconnected network of sacred sites that trace the prophetic journey 鈥 from revelation to migration, and from peace to conquest.

Al-Dahas underscored the importance of launching awareness initiatives to shed light on these mosques and restore their rightful standing. He said that safeguarding Makkah鈥檚 Islamic heritage was not limited to preserving its prominent landmarks, but also required reviving these historically significant mosques, which once stood as pivotal markers along the journey of the prophetic message.

He said that reconnecting pilgrims with these sacred sites revived the educational and historical depth of Hajj, enriching the journey with a more profound, informed, and spiritually immersive experience.

Namirah and Bay鈥檃h Mosques

Many Muslims performing Hajj and Umrah remain unaware that there are other mosques of historical importance quietly tucked away within the expanding urban landscape of Makkah and Madinah. Namirah Mosque in Arafat, for one, is not merely a physical structure, but a sacred site where the foundational principles of Islam were proclaimed, notes history professor Fawaz Al-Dahas of Umm Al-Qura University. Another is Bay鈥檃h Mosque in Mina, he says, where the Ansar pledged allegiance to the Prophet, paving the way for the Hijrah and the establishment of the Islamic state.
