  • The research examined underwater habitats
  • Scientists used an environmental sensitivity map to classify different underwater areas

RIYADH: 萝莉视频鈥檚 National Center for Wildlife has conducted a study of marine biodiversity in the Red Sea.
The research examined underwater habitats, and was part of efforts to safeguard the Kingdom鈥檚 natural resources, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Scientists used an environmental sensitivity map to classify different underwater areas based on the vulnerability of the species found there, prioritizing areas with a high number of at-risk species.
Surveys were carried out on 64 locations along the coastline to investigate the health of the species in those regions.
Changes in water temperature were measured in 37 different spots, to monitor the impact that higher temperatures have on wildlife.
CEO of the NCW, Mohammed Qurban, said that the study aligned with the green development goals of 萝莉视频, which promote environmental sustainability in the Kingdom.
He also talked about the significance of surveys and how they were a critical tool to detect signs of any changes to habitats, which allowed organizations to address any issues.
NCW said in a statement that it would continue a number of studies and programs throughout the year to protect the marine and terrestrial biodiversity in the Kingdom.
The Red Sea is home to an array of wildlife including whales, dolphins, hammerhead sharks and sea snakes.
This week, one of the largest coral colonies in the world was discovered in the Red Sea.
The massive Pavona coral colony is expected to become an environmentally friendly tourist attraction managed by Red Sea Global.
Earlier this month, marine scientists found creatures thriving in deep waters of the Red Sea under seemingly unfavorable conditions of low oxygen levels and high acidity.
The unusual ecosystem was found in Difat Farasan near the border between 萝莉视频 and Yemen.
The NCW is also leading initiatives to protect the dugong population in the Red Sea from further decline.
Efforts by the center include satellite tracking and scientific research to monitor its distribution in 萝莉视频鈥檚 territorial waters.
Additionally, national plans are in place to manage and rehabilitate the species鈥 natural habitats, supporting long-term sustainability and the conditions necessary for dugong reproduction and survival.

  • Reem Hazzazi鈥檚 journey highlights a cultural shift as more women take on leadership roles in sports

JEDDAH: Reem Hazzazi is among a new wave of Saudi women breaking barriers in sports, carving her place not as an athlete, but as one of the Kingdom鈥檚 first international weightlifting referees.

Her journey began a little over three years ago at the moment she stepped into a weightlifting hall, drawn not to the cheers of the crowd thrilled by the athletes鈥 performance, but to the quiet precision of referees.

鈥淚 realized I didn鈥檛 just want to watch weightlifting; I wanted to be part of it, but from a different angle,鈥 Hazzazi, 40, told Arab News. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when I decided to pursue refereeing.鈥

For years, weightlifting was seen largely as a men鈥檚 sport, with few envisioning women in officiating roles. Hazzazi embraced that challenge.

鈥淭he biggest hurdle was breaking the stereotype,鈥 she explained. 鈥淎t first, people were surprised to see me in this role. But with persistence and hard work, that surprise turned into respect.鈥

Her curiosity about the sport鈥檚 rules drove her deeper. She learned every detail of the snatch and clean-and-jerk and trained alongside senior referees, while facing constant pressure to prove herself.

She learned that refereering is a responsibility that requires 鈥渁ccuracy, discipline and a thorough understanding of the game.鈥

Support from her family, peers and the Saudi Weightlifting Federation helped her to endure.

鈥淭he federation鈥檚 backing has been crucial,鈥 Hazzazi said. 鈥淯nder Mohammed Al-Harbi鈥檚 leadership, they provided training programs, workshops and opportunities to gain real experience at local and international tournaments. That support gave me the confidence to keep going.鈥

Her determination carried her to the Arab Games in Cairo in 2023, a defining moment in her career.

鈥淚t was an incredible experience,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 just about the competition; it was about learning from referees across the Arab world, adapting to new situations under pressure, and realizing I was representing my country in such a significant event. I felt immense pride.鈥

Earning her international refereeing badge that same year had symbolized much more than personal achievement.

鈥淥n a personal level, it brought me joy and pride, reflecting the result of my efforts in domestic tournaments,鈥 she said. 鈥淧rofessionally, it represented a greater responsibility 鈥 an opportunity to participate in global competitions and elevate 萝莉视频鈥檚 presence in prestigious arenas.鈥

Today, Hazzazi is one of more than a dozen Saudi women certified as referees, marking a cultural shift unthinkable a decade ago.

鈥淭oday, the situation is very promising,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a growing recognition of women鈥檚 roles, and the federation鈥檚 support has been transformative. Among my colleagues, you can feel the difference 鈥 there鈥檚 more confidence, excitement and opportunities to participate internationally.鈥

Her goals now reach beyond her own career. 鈥淚 want to help develop a new generation of Saudi referees 鈥 both men and women 鈥 to strengthen our national competitions,鈥 she said.

She also has her eyes on the world stage.

鈥淚 hope to represent 萝莉视频 at major events, from world championships to the Olympic Games. I want to show that Saudi women can lead in global sports.鈥

Her message to aspiring referees is clear: 鈥淏elieve in yourselves and take the first step, even if it feels difficult. Sports offer vast opportunities. Refereeing, in particular, requires passion, discipline and accuracy. With hard work, success is achievable.鈥

As 萝莉视频 invests in global sports and nurtures new talent, Hazzazi sees herself as part of a wider movement.

With a smile, she said, 鈥淲ait for me at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh this November.鈥

For Hazzazi, weightlifting is not just about judging lifts, it鈥檚 about lifting expectations, breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of Saudis to take their place at the heart of the action.
